Your 5 best 80's pop songs?

Best decade of music and movies...

And I know some of these may be more new wave then pop, but if they were on the Billboard Top 100 they count, m'kay?

My list certainly changes over the years, but in my current mood I'd say:

1. Broken Wings by Mr.Mister
2. Self Control by Laura Branigan
3. Something About You by Level 42
4. Too Shy by Kajagoogoo
5. Our House by Madness

reply

1 Get It On (Bang A Gong) – The Power Station
2 The Wild Boys – Duran Duran
3 Need You Tonight – INXS
4 The Number Of The Beast – Iron Maiden
5 Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard

reply

Damn! Wild Boys... I knew you would have a D2 selection but I did not figure on that one.

reply

The 12 inch! 😀

reply

I must say their early 12 singles are damn amazing. I’ve tried to collect all I can.

reply

Yeah, the rockier night versions are awesome.

reply

The cover art is great too. Careless Memories comes to mind.

reply

The Chauffeur would have been my top song but it was never a single. 🤨

reply

It’s a master piece.

The droning engine throbs in time with your beating heart.

reply

Sing Blue Silver!

reply

Yep. Any time I hear someone saying Duran Duran was a boy band of the 80’s I immediately realize they don’t know what they are talking about.

reply

That and a number of other 80's bands too.

reply

Great list!

reply

I just wish you said top 20, so many great songs and artists I left out! 😃

reply

Haha I just told someone else I could pick at least 30 that all could be my top 5 list, so maybe this was just my top 5 this month?

reply

lol yep, maybe do albums next time? 😉

reply

Love these.

reply

Duran Duran - Save a Prayer
Erasure - Blue Savannah
New Order - Blue Monday
Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home)
Depeche Mode - Strange Love

reply

Major Tom (Coming Home) wasn't the hit it should have been in England, I know it but not that well, it only reached number 42. Great tune!

reply

I buy a lot of vinyl off of Discogs and most of my big purchases ship from the U.K. It takes a while so I kind of forget until they show up in the mail and it’s so exciting when they arrive. I got a nice package in a week ago. Are there a lot of vinyl stores over there?

reply

HMV is the main one. https://www.hmv.com/

reply

I was more thinking of the used stores where you go in and dig through crates to find the gems. 😀

reply

lol loads of them!

reply

Blue Monday would be in my top 15 for sure.

reply

Love these.

Emotion 98.3

Blondie - Atomic
Bryan Adams - Run To You
Cutting Crew - Died In Your Arms
Kate Bush - Wow
Toto - Africa

reply

Love these.

reply

That Cutting Crew song is one of my favourites from any decade.

reply

Together In Electric Dreams - Oakey & Moroder
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
True - Spandau Ballet
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Steppin Out - Joe Jackson

reply

Love these.

reply

I loved She Sells Sanctuary. The Cult was a different band then. I enjoyed what they became but it is a shame they didn't make more in the Goth/New Wave genre.

I was a metal head in the 80s but some tunes drew me to greater exposure. This one was one of the first that got me trying other stuff as well.

reply

Man, I thought The Cult was the best rock band of the 1980s. I have Electric in my car's CD player and listen to it all the time.

reply

Electric is a fantastic album. I crisply remember buying it at The Wherehouse in Covina, CA in 1987. I went in to buy the new Testament and replace my heat-ruined Reign in Blood casette. The attractive cashier up-sold Electric to me off a display. Told me it was like Aerosmith. "The Cult? Like Aerosmith?? pff" I says. I had to buy it to hear for myself how this band I knew and liked could possibly have changed so much. Thank God they didn't sound like Aerosmith but I owe that mystery girl. It remains a favorite and probably The Cult's best.

reply

Great story! Isn't it funny what we remember?

Mine isn't as good but I'll share since I too remember it exactly. I had barely heard of The Cult until my sophomore year of college (1992). My housemate and I were at a record store (I was going in for Rush's Roll the Bones) and suggested it so I bought it too. That next year we had that, the Chili Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Pearl Jam's Ten rotating constantly on my boom box.

That is the same exact CD I have had for 25+ years and is currently in my car. I'd say I got my $9.99 worth.

reply

Wow! Nice. I was strictly buying cassettes in 87 mostly for my car but I do still have it in a huge box full of Vans shoeboxes loaded with my old tapes. Took me awhile to get on board with CDs.

This exchange (and this entire thread) has stirred even more wonderful memories. Thanks.

Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes
Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something
Madonna - Crazy for You
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

reply

All great! I love Belinda Carlisle and Cyndi Lauper. Both have great voices, Carlisle was mesmerizingly hot in the 80s and the fact Cyndi Lauper was involved with pro wrestling makes her even cooler.

reply

Love these.

reply

No way I can choose 5, but I do like all of yours.

reply

TY :)
I could probably pick 30 songs, possibly more, that I could swap in and out of a top 5 list, but these were the ones I seem to be listening to the most.

reply

Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen
Drive by The Cars
Self Control by Laura Branigan
The Voice by The Moody Blues

reply

Love these.

reply

to name a few.

sunglasses at night - corey hart
girl you know it's true - milli vanilli
when doves cry - prince
don't you want me baby - human league
forever young - alhpaville

reply

Milli Vanilli were too cheesy, even for me, lol.

reply

They were easily the worst band of the 80s. Even worst than "Air Supply"!

reply

An act Andy has distain for! Finally I found it! 😋

reply

Having studied music at university and subsequently worked in the industry, I have a real appreciation of the effort that goes into the writing, recording and performing process, but even I have my limits, lol.

reply

Even before the scandal hit I thought they were a bit ropey!

A movie about their rise and fall would be interesting…we just need to find a talented scriptwriter with an eye for casting! 🕵️‍♂️

reply

You know, I'd probably watch it too, lol.

reply

I just hope that freemovieideas fella reads this!!!

reply

Oh gee, what the bloody hell was all that about 🙄
