I think I've set a record for the longest lasting milk

The milk in my refrigerator has an expiration date of August 31. Including today, it's 45 days past the expiration date and it's still perfectly fine. I used a cup of it to make some Hamburger Helper a few hours ago. I've had milk last about a month past its expiration date before, but never a month and a half.

What do I win?

Edit: I just checked the milk (October 15) and it now has a slight odor. I dumped it down the drain. R.I.P. Old Milk.

You can't get food poisoning from food that's perfectly fine.

A gallon of milk lasts about 3 or 4 days in my fridge, so this is absurd to me.

Do you mean it lasts 3 or 4 days before it's gone or before it spoils?

I mostly only use milk for cooking (I hardly ever drink it and I don't eat cereal), so it usually spoils before I finish it. I only buy a half-gallon at a time.

Me too. I hardly ever even use a half gallon. I'd but pints but they cost more than half gallons.

No smell at all. If it had a smell of any kind I'd consider it spoiled and dump it down the drain.

No. My sense of smell (and taste) works the same as it always has, and I haven't had a cold or flu since 2005.

I wonder what else is in your fridge. An old tomato turned to black sludge? Bread that could cure the plague?

Yes, but it's still in there because it hasn't gone bad yet, unlike e.g., "a tomato that's turned to black sludge", which wouldn't be in there because it's obviously long since gone bad.

Yeah, I've had that happen before too, and it sucks, especially if it leaked through the packaging. But there's usually nothing particularly old in my refrigerator except for stuff that lasts forever, like Worcestershire sauce and various types of mustard.

Sometimes I buy the no refrigeration necessary version from Amazon, and keep it in the pantry. It's fine for when you run out.

I'm a bit surprised how long raw ground beef lasts these days. It used to be that you had about 3 days at most, to freeze it, use it or lose it. I'm still amazed at the "freeze by" date I see on packages now. Obviously, preservatives or irradiation changes things.

Milk lasts a lot longer than it used to too. When I was a kid in the '80s, milk might last a few days past the expiration date. I first noticed it was lasting a lot longer about 15 years ago, up to a month past the expiration date in some cases. This current jug of milk I have beats all though.

The "expiration date", or "use by date", or "best by date", or whatever you want to call it, that's printed on the jug. The milk has a date of August 31, which means I bought it a week or two before that.

Ordinary whole milk from a cow, "Hood" brand.

I find though that the "going off" will not exactly begin , but accelerate, rapidly from first opening , and subsequent openings.

if you buy 2 gallons on the same day (with same exp date) ,
take a glass out of one everyday for a week,
on that 7th day the remaining milk in the opened one will be in foar worse state than the untouched one.
thats what i was getting at , might explain the record , especially if the fridge is mega cold borderline freezing

Yeah, the more times you open it, the more the milk is exposed to bacteria in the air, which can lead to it spoiling faster. But even unopened milk will normally spoil long before 46 days past the expiration date, because normal pasteurization, unlike UHT, doesn't kill all of the bacteria already in the milk, which is why it needs to be refrigerated even before it's opened, whereas UHT milk doesn't need to be and can last 6 to 9 months without refrigeration if it hasn't been opened yet.

I don't know exactly when I opened the milk, but it was before the expiration date, so not all that long after I bought it, and when I dumped it out yesterday because it had finally started giving off an odor, I'd used about 3/4 of it, small amounts at a time ranging from 1/4 cup (like for a box of macaroni and cheese) to 1 cup (like for a box of Hamburger or Tuna Helper).
