The only thing that has aged very poorly in Zeppelin’s music is Plant’s shrill, flamboyant caterwauling

I am still a huge Zeppelin fan, definitely the greatest rock band of all time. But even an ounce of restraint in his vocal delivery would’ve made a tremendous difference. As it is how, I frequently have to fast forward certain parts of songs or skip them altogether because his performance is so over the top and cringey. Often times this is during the refrain or bridge of a song, where the tempo and melody are brought to a grinding halt with some bizarre ethereal instrumentation accompanied by Plant’s operatic, overly affected vocals.

Baby you need

reply

Aw bull, the band's sound needed something BIG on the vocal end!

Plant had a truly great voice back in the day, real range and power and a distinctive style, he was even fantastic live if the recordings I've seen are any reflection of the reality. Of course it didn't last, those rock power-screamers inevitably burn out their voices while they're still young, but Plant's voice sure was great while it lasted.

reply

Yep, Morrison’s voice defiantly changed before he died.

reply

Janis Joplin would have burned out her voice if she'd lived longer, by forty she'd have been pouring beer at a biker bar or something.

But her voice was really something, she had extraordinary range and power. And like him, her tone was so poorly focused that it was guaranteed to damage her vocal chords in time.

Like what??

Most of the time?? You’ve listed one cover off of their debut album, how does this constitute most of their original songwriting?

no doubt they took parts from many songs and made them into great songs.

obviously everyone borrows and is inspired by other bands. but zep has had some blatant rip offs.

reply

The only other one that comes to mind is the Stairway opening riff

reply

actually, i disagree with people who say zep ripped off Spirit's "Taurus" song. did it inspire stairway intro? sure, probably. the bands definitely knew each other. they played venues together. but its certainly changed enough.

other songs are completely ripped or changed slightly or patchworked together. songs by willie dixon, howlin wolf, etc. here;s a couple songs you can look for similarities:

https://youtu.be/tp0jZ4BGuDw?t=24 The Small Faces-You Need Loving (written by willie dixon)
https://youtu.be/TScCqHlBag0?t=11 Joan Baez - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (written by Anne Bredon)

interestingly enough these artists recorded the songs without giving the writers credit either.

Zep has settled out of court and added credits to the albums over the years.

What? How did they not have any original ideas of their own?

You and OP both have to drop and give me 50 pushups.

reply

Nonsense. Listen to their deep cuts. Their originality was very innovative and unusual with quite eclectic influences such as Irish folk music, etc. Physical Graffiti is a great example of their diversity.

reply

I never liked Robert Plant's singing when he took it to extremes, or Janis Joplin's when she started screeching either.

"CRINGEY" IS NOT A WORD...YOU SOUND LIKE A 12 YEAR OLD GIRL WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES.🙂

I’m a zeppelin fan too , but I wouldn’t get on one . It’s a very unsafe air vessel

reply

Lol

Actually, if I was a billionaire, I'd look into getting one! Small private "airships" aren't common but they're around, and they're a slow and quiet way to travel, they sound much more pleasant than helicopters. Scientists have also used small ones to study the tree life in the canopy of the tropical rain forests, something that's inaccessible to ground-based humans. Little blimps can be anchored in place and will hover there silently, unlike helicopters which wobble and shake and make so much noise they scare off the wildlife for miles aorund.

So yeah, if I had money to burn, I'd look into getting a little birding zeppelin!
