A TV show made before 1990 that you think has aged well?

Columbo

reply

Columbo is pretty great, maybe a top example

Magnum P.I. still holds up
That show is great👍

reply

The show itself is just okay. It's Peter Falk's performance as Columbo that elevates it to a whole other level and makes it one of the all-time greats.

As for Magnum: did a TV character ever sport shorter shorts than Magnum? I remember in one of the earlier eps a woman staying at Robin's Nest espies Magnum in his barely-there shorts and subsequently asks Higgins why Magnum's walking around in broad daylight in his underwear. Personally, I think likening Magnum's shorts to underwear is charitable: I've run across knickers much, much more modest than Magnum's shorts ever were.

Good show though all the same.

reply

Jack Tripper and his pal Larry wore ridiculously tiny shorts on Three's Company all the time...yep, I'm a bit disturbed that I remember that😒

reply

Three’s Co. they wore shorter shorts, even Jack.

The Honeymooners

Going back!
True, one of the best comedies ever

I Love Lucy too:)

reply

Amen with Sherman Hemsley. I watch it nearly everyday.

reply

The Jeffersons was really good fun
I must admit I don't recall Amen...Was that a short run show?

reply

No there were five seasons. You have to check it out. It’s hilarious. You can probably find some on YouTube.

reply

WEAK BRO...REAL WEAK.🙄

reply

I’m a woman. Why is Amen weak?

reply

AMEN IS EXCELLENT...SHOGUN IS WEAK FOR NOT KNOWING IT...PLEASED TO MEET YOU LADY.🙂

reply

Pleased to meet you as well 🤗 Thanks.

reply

FUN FACT...MY FATHER WAS A STATE PARK RANGER IN THE 80S...DURING HIS SHIFT ONE NIGHT HE GAVE DIRECTIONS TO A LIMO...INSIDE THE LIMO...SHERMAN HEMSLEY AND A YOUNG WHITE BOY IN HIS TIGHTY WHITEYS.🙂

reply

That’s not funny in any way.

reply

MAYBE NOT....ITS TRUE THOUGH.🤔

reply

Yikes! I’ll add that to “Things I wish I didn’t know”.

reply

And your law enforcement father did nothing??

reply

HOURLY WAGE PARK RANGER...AND YES,HE AND HIS COWORKER GAVE THEM DIRECTIONS AND THAT WAS ALL.

reply

He should reported him to law enforcement.

reply

HE IS SITTING IN MY LIVING ROOM SUCKING ON HIS BONG...YOU WANNA TELL HIM?

reply

Sure, put him on.

Let me guess - he’s been waking and baking for 60 years.

reply

I loved Amen! Not only one of the funniest shows but one of the best theme songs too. :)

reply

Yes!!

barney miller

reply

SOLID SHOW.ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF THE ERA.

reply

Real cops regularly said that Barney Miller portrayed life at a police station more accurately than any cop show ever made. Even though it was a comedy, those kinds of quirky things really happened.

reply

great writing and they were ahead of their time in dealing with certain issues.

reply

Yes, Barney Miller.

reply

Yes. I watch it on Antenna TV, and it's bizarre how so many of the incidents on the show could happen today, even though it took place in gritty 1970s NYC.

reply

ONLY CHANNEL I WATCH...IM 99.9% DVD/BLU/VHS...BUT THAT TINY LIL BIT OF THE TIME I DONT HAVE SOMETHING PLAYING....ANTENNA TV IS THE ONLY CHANNEL...I HAVENT CHANGED CHANNELS ...IN LIKE 3 YEARS.

reply

I watch a lot of MeTV.

reply

The Golden Girls

reply

I THINK THAT MIGHT BE THE CHAMP...THE GOLDEN GIRLS IS ETERNAL.

reply

Would it be easier to ask which ones have aged poorly? I'd like to think the popular shows of the past were fondly remembered and have "legs" in our time, but some not so much.

reply

I think sitcom's tend to age badly, especially ones from the 80's. Also a lot of the shows from the 80's in general, Knight Rider, Fall Guy etc. Still fun as far as nostalgia goes but we are talking some very simple and slow plots.

reply

Yes. I've been trying to watch some of those 1980s shows and almost all of them are cringe-inducing, which surprised me. I grew up watching them religiously but decades later, they're unwatchable.

reply

Even at the time as a kid I knew they were pretty empty plot wise. But back then you didn't binge watch anything. You got the show once a week so I guess it kind of balanced out. That "Binge Watch" factor is pretty important in terms of how shows will be perceived in the future I think.

There are also (slightly) newer shows that although I liked them on TV later on when I had them downloaded I couldn't really get into them.

reply

There are loads of good shows pre-1990, but for a short answer:

Magnum, P.I. (best show ever)
Gunsmoke
The Andy Griffith Show

reply

We didn't watch Gunsmoke when I was a kid so when I see it now, it's pretty entertaining. I like being invested in the regular charaters and that the show does (for me) create tension and uncertainty - even when we know Matt and the crew aren't gonna die - makes me feel like it has held up well.
Personally, I'm not sure I want to engage with the Andy Griffith Show at this point, (too corny and saccharine), but if I gave it an honest try, I might not be so harsh.

reply

There's nothing saccharine about TAGS.

reply

Is the new Magnum any good?

reply

Don't know, I refuse to watch it. It's sacrilege for me.
