I think my aunt owned a few movies on laserdisc. Was that the thing that looked like a record, but played a movie?

reply

That was it.

reply

Neither
We went with VHS

Never
Beta was losing the war with VHS by then and Laser Discs just seemed too expensive

On a side note the Star Wars laser disc trilogy is original with none of the stupid extra footage and showboating CG effects Lucas dopily crammed into the movies years later

If I came across an LD player and the SW trilogy at a junk shop or flea market I'd pay a good few bucks for the lot👍

You’re the ... hey shut up

reply

Nope, VHS was already the dominate make by the time my family bought a VCR in the early 80's. I remember laserdisk coming out and movies cost like $100 each not to mention there was something about it all that seemed flash in the pan to me so never bothered.

reply

My folks had a betamax

I grew up on VHS, but many years later, after DVD had come and nearly gone, I starting collecting Laserdiscs. They are awesome to have like a big album if it's in good shape, simply for the display aspect of it. My collection is still young, but I have Star Wars Trilogy, Dragonslayer, Dark Crystal, and Princess Bride.

reply

That's a mighty fine collection, every one a very good to great movie👍

reply

We had a betamax and then got a vhs a few years later, which ended up okay because they was no copy protection when copying to beta. So we would just record everything onto beta and the quality didn't suffer at all.

reply

Never had any Betamax, only Laserdisc. Which was really awesome! It'a almost DVD quality and has Dolby Surround sound. My dad has quite a lot of Laserdisc movies back then. Terminator 2, Star Wars, Aliens, Robocop, Superman IV, Batman Returns, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Die Hard, etd. Good stuffs.

The only annoying thing about Laserdisc is that movies usually came in both sides of the disc, so you have to get up and flip it mid-film.
