Movies that were supposed to launch a franchise... but BOMBED!

Which are (the most infamous) movies that were supposed to launch or continue franchises that were cancelled because of poor box office performance/audience reception?

The Mummy (2017) | The Dark Universe

John Carter (2012)

November Man (2014) | Smaller scope movie vs the previously mentioned, but I remember Brosnan saying that he had already signed on for sequels (yes, plural).

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

We’ll never get to hear about the other 999.

You can always make a thousand posts! 😉

Not a movie but the NES game The Cheetahmen was supposed to be the next Ninja Turtles, it was a broken game you could practically cheat your way through entirely.

CHEATING THE CHEETAHMEN?😕

Hellboy (2019)

reply

They did make a sequel to this one. Don't know if this fact disqualifies it for the OP.

reply

What was the sequel film?

reply

Hellboy 2.

The one they made with David Harbor changed a lot of things that people liked about the character, I heard. That was a reboot, I think. They started over. I think that one was a franchise killler.

reply

Hellboy II (2008) was Ron Perlman. I was talking about Hellboy (2019) starring David Harbour.

reply

Did you put the year in there originally? Sorry, missed it.

Yeah, Redsfan got me thinking about the original hellboy and the sequel. Those weren't bad.

reply

Yes I did.

reply

In that case, I agree. That one was a franchise killer.

reply

Yeah. A what were they thinking moment. It came out not in the dawn of superhero movies. It was 2019. Disney, WB and Sony already gave many examples of what works and what doesn't. Smh.

reply

I REALLY LIKED IT..I HAVE THE BLU RAY...WATCHED IT THREE TIMES I THINK...HARBOUR IS GREAT AS HELLBOY.I LOVED HIS SIDEKICKS...IAN MCSHANE,MILLA JOVOVICH...THAT TROLL HUNT SCENE...I VERY MUCH ENJOY HELLBOY 2019.🙂

reply

Really? I was struggling to finish it. It's not even bad, it's simply super boring and not interesting at all. The lore, the characters, the story, the action scenes, everything is just cliche and generic af!

reply

I DONT KNOW...I RESPECT OUR OPINION BUT COMPLETELY DISAGREE...I KINDA WANT TO WATCH IT AGAIN NOW...

Haha just saw the title and instantly thought of John Carter!

Terminator: Dark Fate was set to be a trilogy, but doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Super Mario Brothers, I remember this was supposed to be a trilogy as well.
Golden Compass, although this has been revived as a series thankfully.
Fantastic 4, both times!

reply

The first Fantastic 4 did have a sequel tho'.

reply

Yup totally forgot about it.

reply

Well fantastic 4 will get another try soon I guess but now Finally under Marvel studios.

Anyway the first one with Chris Evans wasn’t so bad. It’s funny how both actors who played the human torch latter worked with Marvel studios Chris Evans and Michael B Jordan.

I like Michael as the bad guy in black Panther but I wished he had a leading in his own mini franchise within the MCU. Maybe give him blade.

reply

I agree that the first one was just OK, never got around to seeing the reboot. I didn't think it was terrible, but it certainly wasn't good imo. One of those movies you see and don't care to watch ever again. I would put it on par with Green Lantern.

reply

Yes. It’s passable, it’s not something I need to re watch but i did have fun with it.

reply

It’s sad November man didn’t work it was a pretty good Action Film And Pierce was really good in it.

reply

The mortal Instruments it’s another failed franchise though it latter became a Netflix series which I believe it did succeed on the small screen.

reply

Daredevil (2003) although I liked it but I have to say I also enjoy that it is a one off rather than probably being on the 20th reboot or sequel by now.
