NBA Finals odds and predictions- what are your picks?

I won’t list the all the odds for the oddsmakers and online books, but the general consensus has the top two teams as the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers, both anywhere from 2 to 1 to 2.5 to 1....the Los Angeles Clippers are a close third pick at 3/1 to 3.5/1....after that there is a drop off in odds, with a four team combo of the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers ranging from 12/1 to 22/1....converting it from American money line to fraction odds, it’s worth noting that the top three favorites opened between a consensus 6/1 to 10/1 and then dropped considerably to their current odds, meaning most of the money was immediately placed on those three favorites as soon as the book started taking picks...no way of telling if that’s casual money or smart money- it’s probably a combination of both, in my analyzed opinion....after all, those three were clearly the best three before the shutdown....what does that all mean?....that’s for you to decide, it’s just my habit to look at numbers and trends among other factors when I make an objective choice on which teams I think will make the final 2...

This is almost unprecedented— the closest situation we’ve had to this one is the 1999 lockout-shortened season of 50 games....quality of play was noticeable from the start, but it didn’t affect the eventual champs, the San Antonio Spurs, who took the best overall record while securing a No. 1 seed....it was a bit different for the Eastern Conference bracket that year, as Uncle Shogie’s 8-seeded New York Knicks took advantage of some sluggish play and made an improbable run to the Finals, where they were promptly disposed in 5 games by the Spurs....while I think there’s a possibility something like that could happen again— a lower seed making a run— it’s tough to gauge because the reasons for this pause in play were different, and player preparation in modern times is starkly different....in ‘99, players came in not-so-great shape, while today’s athletes work out year round and most likely did the same during the pandemic...these are just a few things I take into consideration...

Since the top two teams are from opposite conferences, it’s easy to pick the Bucks and the Lakers and call it a day...but I’m not sure it’s that easy....in the West, the Clippers match up well with their Staples Center partners and they’re the one team that can match the Lakers’ collective talent...and now without Avery Bradley and Rajon Rondo for our brother KOWALSKI’s Lake Show, the Clippers may be a bit better defensively, which is huge in the playoffs...but I do think one of those two teams will come out of the West....I keep hearing the Portland Trail Blazers as a sleeper, but I don’t see it...I think most of that is based on the fact that Jusef Nurkic benefitted from the long break and will be able to suit up this year, along with the already solid guard duo of Lillard and McCollum....I’ll make a not so bold prediction in my view: the Rockets will NOT make the finals despite their 4th to 7th favorite status....

The Bucks are the obvious top dog in the East, but the conference is a bit more balanced and competitive so I can see a lot of different scenarios there....the Celtics have the talent and good coaching, so they’ll compete...the Raptors obviously have the experience and mettle, and though they proved last year they could win with a Kawhi Leonard playing in just 75 percent of the games, along with this year’s win total, they’ll have to do it with Leonard not playing in 100 percent of their games this time around....Siakam is good, but I’m not sure if he’s ready to carry them every time during clutch time...the Sixers are good, but they had outstanding shooters last year and couldn’t win, their shooting is not as good this year so there’s that; still, they’re too talented to count out...sleepers here include the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers...

That’s my info for you....is yours different?...what say you?...what are your Finals picks, and what team do you think will win it all?

It's too bad Mavericks get to play clippers first round. I think those two are my favorite teams at the moment and both can win vs Lakers and have won vs Lakers in regular season or played closed games. Lakers are a good team but Mavericks and Clippers can beat them.

reply

Doncic is a joy to watch, once he plays better defense— doesn’t have to great, just better — once that happens, he’ll be as good as long as he wants to be...that duo of him and Porzingis is an intriguing one..I know he wanted out, but the Knicks got fleeced on that one, they better hope to get quality from Dennis Smith....

reply

Lakers losing Avery Bradley and possibly rajon rondo will be big. I'm not really a fan of the knuckleheads was JR Smith and Dion waiters especially with team chemistry. But who knows the clippers have a lot of guys out but I don't think any of them are for injuries.

Milwaukee vs LA.. in any other year I would say the bucks had very little chance to win but because they are young team with this weird start and stop and start who knows

reply

That’s the safe bet, billy, but you’re right, anything can happen in this set of crazy circumstances....

JR Smith and Waiters can display questionable judgement at times, and that’s being kind....if I was Laker fan living locally, I already know about the easy accessibility to the herbal medicine, let’s hope for the teams sake those two don’t go overboard like a kid in a candy store, because that “candy” is on practically every corner in parts of the city...shyt, I probably live near 10-15 in just a 5 mile radius...if I still smoked I’d have stock in Wienerschnitzel with all the trips I’d be taking there...

reply

THE DISNEY BUBBLE HELPS WITH THAT....I HEAR WAITERS LOOKS AMAZING DURING PRATICES...JR JUST NEEDS TO PLAY DEFENSE AND HIT A THREE OR TWO.

reply

You’re right, they’re not in la, I got excited talking about the dank, Big K...but those boys probably have no issue getting some bud, and word on the street is that Smith always has a bag on him....and Waiters, lol, that story about the edibles and the plane ride still cracks me up...

My prediction...Pain!

But seriously, my thoughts on how the NBA is going to play out this year is as follows. Since the league has lost so much money this year due to the world situation, I think the NBA will resort to much more manipulation of games than is usual to maximize interest from fans and profits. Here's how I see it going down:

Lakers and Clippers in Western Conference finals. I 100% expect to see this since the NBA will want to build a rivalry because rivalries create interest. Lakers will win because ever since Lebron came into the league, they've gave him a helping hand here and there because they needed to build a megastar when he came into the league with the retirements of all the players of the 80s and 90s and Shaq was already on the downswing, Duncan was so quiet, it was hard to pump up people for him, so Kobe was the only real megastar at the time.

Eastern Conference Finals I think the NBA will allow any combination of the Bucks, 76ers and Boston. Trust me, the Raptors won't make it this year because since Kawhi left, they don't have the star power for the NBA to back them (same for Denver - I guarantee they won't get anywhere near the finals even though they are a good complete team). The NBA will allow the EC finals to play out unbiased because it really wont matter which wins in this case. Any of those 3 teams would make for a compelling Finals match up with the Lakers.

Of course the Lakers will be helped to the finals win this year only because as Lebron gets older, the greater the chance he could get injured and not be able to play for the championship, so they want to make sure he gets the ring this year so that they hope he will be put back into the Greatest of all Time conversation since nobody actually takes that seriously now. But if he were to win a ring with a third team, they think it will put him up there with the true greats.
(Psst...It wont for anyone who actually knows basketball.)

So there are my predictions.

I DO NOT LIKE ANY OF THAT "STUFF" YOU JUST TYPED.

reply

Not even that I have the Lakers to win the chip?

Once Lebron retires, I'll go back to being a Lakers fan. AD's awesome, so hopefully he's still on LA then.

reply

THAT SOUNDS LIKE MY DAD...I DIDNT THINK ID LIKE LEBRON EITHER...HIS KOBE LIKE WORK ETHIC AND HAPPY FIT IN SO CAL HAVE TRULY HELPED ME GET ONBOARD THIS TRAIN THOUGH...PLUS,A.D. MAYBE DOESNT GET TRADED TO AND PROBABLY DOESNT RESIGN WITHOUT OL 23.

reply

If Lebron had the competitive fire of a Kobe, or Jordan or Bird, dude would have probably 8 or 9 championships with all the stacked teams with multiple All NBA players he's been on. Even this year, you've got 2 of the top 4 players in the league on the same team with the Lakers, so they've got the talent edge over any other team's top 2 superstars.

reply

"KOBE LIKE"....NOBODY WILL EVER BE THE FORCE BRYANT WAS....I AGREE WITH THE REST...THIS YEAR WAS GOING SO GOOD BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN...I FULLY EXPECT THE SAME AND TITLE NOW.

reply

Clubber Lang, bad ass mofo and conspiracy theorist, who knew!

I can’t blame you for thinking some of that, MG... I just hope for some clean and fair competition, though I’ll concede that it’s in Adam Silver’s best interest to have the major players and teams go deep and preferably all the way to the Finals...

reply

I always hope it's done fairly, but I suspect that being a multibillion dollar global industry, they don't always leave everything to chance and they've developed some system to be able to manipulate the games when necessary without it being too apparent.

reply

No arguments there, the Tim Donaghy situation wasn’t the NBA’s finest hour...and the alleged conspiracy surrounding the Patrick Ewing sweepstakes/frozen envelope at the ‘85 Draft Lottery always makes me think and chuckle....

reply

I strongly doubt that they will complete even a mini-season. I doubt they will play more than a few games before they shut down again.

reply

I hear ya, emencee, I still have my reservations on whether the league will even be able to complete this smaller slate of games and the playoff schedule...but for better or worse, it’s running with it, and we shall see....if it become a shyt show, watch out, the NBA won’t hear the end of it....MLB going through some stuff with the Marlins now, so leagues still need to be cautious....

reply

MLB is non- contact, and players are fairly spaced out. The outfielders are very distanced and even base runners are usually not that close to the infielders. If they are having trouble, I cant imagine the NBA making it through. There is so much close contact.

reply

YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW MY PREDICTIONS...IM JUST WORRIED HOW MY FELLOW SO CAL NATIVES ARE GONNA DEAL WITH THE PARADE DURING THIS PANDEMIC.

reply

Downtown has been revitalized in recent years but I seldom go down there....probably the last time was for a game, a Christmas or two ago pre-James vs. the Timberwolves....I’m not much for crowds anymore but arena team sports like hoops and hockey still great to watch live....

If the Lake Show takes it, I can’t imagine local leaders— despite recent questionable decisions— allowing for a crowd down Figueroa...might have to be a virtual parade, though I don’t know how that works....maybe a party in Brentwood at Lebron James’ palatial pad...or maybe you can clear out some space on your lot brother KOWALSKI and invite a few local locos to party on down....

Cheers and good luck in watching your Purple and Gold try to take the Larry O’Brien Trophy....
