My friend is the perfect vegan.

Doesn't eat meat. Still, goes to barbecues with us and simply brings his own food to cook. Doesn't try to force his lifestyle on us. This is a great vegan.

An annoying vegan is the one who judge people because they eat meat. I will NEVER be vegan, so get the hell out of my case. I respect your lifestyle and appreciate how you care for the well being of animals. I love animals as well, but animals eat each others. That's how nature works. I love meat too much.

So... live and let live.

Nice!

Ha! I know something about this
My best male friend is a Vegan and he gets really pissed if I don't have 'not-dogs' or 'veggie burgers' for him at my cookouts
If he were some casual schmo from the neighborhood I'd ignore him but he is my best dude so whatever he wants I get it for him

reply

The ideal response from a vegan to a backyard BBQ invite would be something like: "Oh gosh, I'm afraid I'd be a party-pooper at a gathering where everyone is eating meat but me, but if you think some people would like to try a new veggie burger patty I've found, maybe that'd be fun. Or maybe you and me could just get together over pita wraps at my place, or the gang would like takeout food from that vegetarian restaurant downtown BECAUSE THERE'S A PANDEMIC ON AND WE NEED TO LIMIT SOCIAL GATHERINGS...".

Although here in California, it's normal for every host to have some sort of vegetarian option. There are so many of us now.

Good suggestions

reply

I've recently become a vegetarian, after many years of being close friends with some very polite vegetarians. I know the drill, I've seen it a million times, now I'm doing it myself.

reply

I actually like the taste of all the meat substitutes. We have a really popular brand here: Beyond meat. It actually tastes like meat. The difference is really hard to make.

I would eat vegan more often if all the vegan products which imitate meat weren't SO expensive. It often costs twice as much.

I also make my own veggie patties for homemade burgers. It's excellent.

But... I still love meat and it's the cheapest way to get all the required amount of proteins in a day. Not that it's the only reason I still eat meat, I really love the taste and I explore different kinds of meat (recently I've tasted bear meat).

reply

How was the bear?
I've heard that the fat is awful tasting and must be completely removed

reply

Well, the texture is close to pork... and I'd say that it kinda tastes like pork, but sweater. And I didn't taste the fat. My friend is hunter and he brought some so he sliced it beforehand.

reply

I'd try it

reply

From what little I've heard, people generally don't eat bears. No reason to shoot them for food. You could if you had to, but not a desired food source. Don't know why, but that's what I've heard.

reply

Okay but my friend did so... what... what do you want me to do exactly?

reply

I'm just commenting, and from what little I know, knowledgeable hunters don't justify killing bear for their meat. Tbh, I never gave it any thought until a few years ago I heard the father of a hunter said he was a little sad that his son had killed a bear without any real purpose, which made an impression on me.

reply

I think it’s because they are carnivores (well omnivores) / predatory animals higher up on the food chain and humans don’t generally eat other animals that eat other animals would be one of the suggestions of why bears aren’t commonly eaten.

reply

Or more simply, for whatever reason, they don't taste good. But being higher on the food chain is an interesting observation and there does seem to be a correlation. I'm sure there are experts who can explain more precisely why we choose to eat what we do and avoid animals like bear, but I figure if bear tasted good, we'd be eating them.

reply

Definitely one good reason.
There are many reasons why they (and other such carnivorous animals) are not commonly eaten.

reply

I think its nice of you to have food for your bestie to eat..I mean when I have anyone over I try to have a small variety because I want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy.
Even if some casual schmo stops in, LOL

reply

You're right, schmos are people too😃

reply

lol

reply

AS THE BROTHER OF AN ASSHOLE VEGAN SISTER...DO YOU COOK YOUR FRIENDS FAUX MEAT ON THE SAME GRILL AS THE REAL MEAT?...MY SISTER WOULD MAKE YOUR FRIEND CRY FOR SUCH AN OFFENSE.

reply

He likes me to turn up the heat for a minute and scrape the meat remnants off before putting his on
Pain in the ass but what can I do, he's been my boy for 30 years...

reply

WHEN WE HAVE A FAMILY BBQ...THE SISTER HAS A SPECIAL SECOND GRILL HERE JUST FOR HER "STUFF".

reply

Yeah, it all seems pretty nutty to me but whatever keeps the fam happy

reply

The problem is that with many vegans, I guess that just thinking about other people eating meat is revolting to them.
So that is why they react so strongly and want you to change.

reply

Veggie burgers and all the meat substitutes are really yummy though. Too bad they are SO expensive.

reply

I couldn’t agree more booboocat. Not just with the vegan thing, but especially the “don’t force your lifestyle on me” thing.
Live and let live. Proclaim your individuality and let others do the same.

reply

Amen pal!

reply

As someone who explored veganism briefly, I think the responses to being vegan are a lot more imperfect than the annoying habits of some vegans. It's way easier to find chill vegans who don't try to push their diet on you than people who don't look at you like there's something wrong with you for not wanting to eat meat, or else emphatically insist they really only eat chicken when you didn't ask them to justify their eating habits to you.

reply

Absolutely! I agree. But some still do and THOSE are annoying as hell. I remember one who called me a murderer and ask me a question which goes in a really retarded way of thinking: "would you kill human children and then eat them? If not, why do you dare eating animals?" 🙄🙄🙄🙄

reply

Yeah, that's definitely annoying and quite stupid tbh. There are a plethora of arguments to make against such a small minded way of thinking.

But from my experience, that doesn't happen very often. It also doesn't happen as often as someone trying to feed you meat after you tell them you don't want to eat it. You'd have far less trouble telling someone you don't like, say, tomatoes - people will rarely push tomatoes in front of you or try to hide tomatoes in your food after finding out you don't like them. But people do that to vegans all the time with meat and then try and "catch them" at being bad vegans, which is just weird, because a lot of them like meat.

Also, I can't even count how many times someone would either attack me for not eating meat or apologize to me for eating meat while I was doing the vegan thing. I had to repeatedly say, I'm not judging you, I literally don't care what you eat, just please don't offer me meat.

Well, I'm lucky to not know these kinds of assholes. I never knew anyone who did that, fortunately. I know Gordon Ramsay did it once and people involved were not amused lol.

reply

I've seen quite a few story lines where the twist at the end is people are being served PEOPLE MEAT !! without their knowledge. It's sort of a trope, wanting to see someone eat something they are morally against doing. A bad indication of what we as a people might be like.

reply

😆I would’ve had a field day if someone asked me that. So many dumb questions, so many funny answers.

reply

I don't judge all veg and vegans against this, but a long time ago I worked with such a person in a group home for Developmentally Disabled persons, and routinely we would slap together bologna sandwiches for lunches and she shrieked at the thought of touching the meat. My overwhelming thought was - get a different job !

reply

If I'm having any sort of dinner/bbq and I know that someone has dietary restrictions, I will do what I can to accommodate them. Even with that, most of my circle will bring something they can eat just in case, as they don't expect anyone to change what they are serving just for them.

These are the most understanding, calm and sensible posts / conversation thread about vegans I’ve read in a long time.
