My Uber driver the other day was a pastor, he said he is certain we will see rapture in the next 5 years

He was interesting to listen to and a super nice guy but how do intelligent people actually believe this shit? He went into explicit deail about how it was all going to go down too, who would be left behind etc. Strange.

reply

did you ask him when his last date when it didnt happen was?

reply

Tell him it's not the end of the world. It's only the end of western civilization, and it'll take still a few decades.

reply

I'm a Christian and grew up in a fundamentalist church, but was never taught anything about the Rapture, in fact I never even knew anything about it until the Left Behind books came out. Some believe in it, but I would guess most don't.

reply

Christ mentioned it, but Catholics don't talk about it either. It seems to be a fundamentalist thing.

“Then there shall be two men in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.—Matthew 24:40-42

I’ve never read the bible, but I had no idea it was so provocative! Nice, I’ll have to check it out.

reply

Well I don't know what the bible says word for word but I think it mentions things like:

Worldwide famine
Natural disasters
Worldwide plagues
War
The Dark One
7 trumpets

If you really wanted to find connections to all of these you could.
Worldwide famine and climate change/our obsession with depleting finite resources could all be lumped together.
We can't sustain our way of life for much longer and not expect water shortages, mass extinctons (already happening ) food shortages which could ultimately lead to mass famine.

Also, our addiction to plastic bottles and plastic waste is shattering the ecosystem.

The way we are wrecking our ecosystem could and is ramping up natural disasters.

War is always occurring and I absolutely think when the resources we all take for granted are gone another world War is inevitable.

The Dark One could be a number of things, as could the 7 Trumpets. Aren't there 7 Trump towers?

reply

Worldwide famine

Actually i was talking with a woman at work and she was explaining to me that the famine was due to global hyperinflation. The Black Horse Rider carries scales with which to measure the comparative value of money and food.

i found that quite interesting

It sounds like he needs to read the entire Bible. Only God the Father knows the specific date. See Matthew 24:36:

36 “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

reply

Yes, the truth is NO ONE knows.

Unfortunately fundamentalist types take the book of Revelation too literally. It is not meant to be taken literally.

Every generation in human history has faced wars, plagues, famines, evil leaders who were thought to be the Anti-Christ, natural disasters, etc.

A few years ago I attended some church services with my friend who belongs to a Fundamentalist church. Her pastor gave out a timeline that he had worked up for the 'Rapture". It was actually 2020. Maybe he was on to something. lol

Actually the guy was a self proclaimed "pastor". He attended some sort of Bible school and started his own church. It's dangerous when people read the Bible and interpret it all on their own. He maintained that he "heard" the Word of the Holy Spirit and understood it. But he disagreed with every other Protestant denomination that made the same claim. So, they can't ALL be right!

reply

If he's a "pastor" then why is he an Uber driver? How does he manage to get time away from running his church?

Sounds a bit suspicious to me.

reply

That's not so unusual. The pastor I just spoke about repairs tires for a living. He only had one service on Sunday. It was a very little church. Many pastors of these little non-denominational churches have regular jobs.

reply

Just what I was going to say. He makes that point several times. The end will come like a thief in the night, when no one expects it.

Since it says in the Bible that "No man shall know the day" (sic) then just start giving new born babies an "official guess" of when the rapture is coming along with their Social Security number. There are always tons of babies born every day so we aught to be able to push it off indefinitely.

(I am a believer but recognize the allegory and parable nature of much of the Bible)

reply

Or we just have to ask a woman. She'll know. Just like the whole deal with Eowyn in LOTR.

reply

Smart kid. Every good husband would agree with this statement.

reply

Yep. I've found that with women, whether they're right or wrong, they're right. So don't even fight it.

reply

I'm pretty sure this is how it's gonna go down:
