Fake crowd noise

Down here in Australia, we're lucky enough to be able to watch my favourite sport, AFL (Aussie rules football).

Due to there being no spectators in the stands, they've started using fake crowd noise when watching on tv. A lot of folks are dissing this but personally I find it quite effective. The guys are getting really good at it too, and are using the right sounds in the right moments. It's almost become an art form.

Yes, they do it on Sky for the Premiership Football too. You have the option of choosing either 'added crowd noise' or 'natural'. The natural option makes it sound like a training ground session, lol.

reply

Wow, you get a choice? I agree, it does sound like a training session without it.

reply

Yeah, you get to hear what the players and manager are saying.

I'm still waiting for some smart alec to add the infamous, "The referee's a w@nker" chant to the fake crowd.

reply

I always select the one with no crowd noise. That's what the players are hearing, so that's the one I choose.

reply

For some reason I thought they were playing the crowd noise in the stadium! To give the players a boost or something.

I did see a game where they had added very fake-looking cgi spectators.

reply

They should go the whole hog and add shots of the "crowd" as well. People, who needs 'em !

reply

I think that can be made. Just paint all the stadium seatings one rarely used color, say bright magenta, and use it as a greenscreen basically to add CGI crowds.

reply

In Australia you can purchase a cardboard cutout of yourself or anyone and they will display it in the stand! From the TV viewpoint it doesn't look to be very popular as there are only a few dozen around but it can be funny as some people opt for Darth Vader etc

reply

I knew that would happen. As long as it's timed correctly it might be OK - just hope it isn't like canned laughter on some sitcoms.

reply

They used to put canned laughter into shows too.

reply

I was just going to mention this. The laugh tracks were incredibly annoying, especially in the sitcoms from the 1960s. It was the same limited handful of sound samples played over and over.

Why do we need fake crowd noise? It just comes across as so phony.

reply

Or live audiences, Happy Days was always annoying as the audience would go mental when certain actors would enter and you would see the actor even break character and have to wait for them to settle down before they could deliver their lines.

reply

I remember when a character on that show would sing a song. The audience would go totally berserk. Was it because they got a bonus performance... singing in addition to acting? I don't know.

reply

At this point I just want baseball back. Fake noise or no noise.

reply

Amen dude! I just wanna go see a rookie game, I don’t even need pro. Who’s your team haimfan?

reply

Cincinnati Reds

reply

Fake has definitely become an art form.

It's better than watching Gamers sitting on their ass playing NBA/NFL
