are actors "all that" ?

People worship actors. I find it odd.
I mean , its not hard is it? read/memorise some lines from a script and put some feeling into it and 'act' like you are that person.
Its takes a bit of skill , granted , but not much.
Actors are way down on my list of heroes, below directors for one.
Its rare i see a film where the acting is so bad it breaks my "suspension of disbelief" which is all its required to do basically.
If the actor is good enough to disguise the fact he's an actor thats all i need.
Speaking of which , the actor carrying a famous face around , must surely be distracting and take you out of the movie as you're reminded its a real actor , not the character?

People seem to worship them like they are the sum of their roles Robert deniro is really as much of a badass as the guy he plays in "Ronin" you know!

Theres a thread on the "Heat" board saying:
"A clip of Val Kilmer changing magazines is used in army basic training as an example of the best way to do it"

Did the soldiers think "Wow , big movie star badass Val kilmer is going to show us a thing or two here!"
or did they think "Why should we, real soldiers, take gun handling lessons from this nancy boy who like to play dress-up and pretend?"

Our society greatly overvalues all famous people - actors, musicians, athletes, etc. But I also think the craft of acting is a lot harder than it looks.

I wouldn't place actors in the upper tier of respect with Firefighters, Police, Nurses or Military Personnel...that would be just silly

However, they do have a really cool skill and most of us couldn't play a convincing pirate or cowboy or whatever

Most actors are shit people. I know this doesn't jive with my love of film but that's how I feel.

Dude it is the weirdest thing to me. I don’t care what any of them do or think. Even the actors I crush on, I’m not like oooo who are they dating now? Actors are held to higher standards than our political leaders. It’s insanity. On the bright side, this is the first time I’ve felt more sane than the public. I’m crazy as fuck but at least I don’t spend my time getting all the important gossip about stupid celebrities.

Some of them are, but very very few are all that and a bag of chips.

People worship the Kardashians. Enough said

reply

Yeah, they were pretty good looking and then the ridiculous surgery started... They are ALL starting to look very weird:/

I've never watched an episode of their show. I avoid any news about them. What skills do they actually have? What do they contribute to world?

reply

I too have never watched their shows, they just all have a buxom ethnic look that I like because I'm a dude (white dudes in particular seem to have a thing for huge lady asses and exotic faces...apologies if that seemed crude) ...The ridiculous plastic surgeries DO seem like some form of mental illness though!

Everyone sees them, so everyone takes an interest in them, usually a very mild one, although "crushes" are common enough. As I put it, "Chris Hemsworth is great at playing my ideal man", which is a different thing that thinking he actually IS my ideal man. That would be crazy.

I also have a good deal of respect for good actors, it's a very difficult craft, and those at the highest level can actually take shitty scripts and make them seem better. That's why Helen Mirren gets the big bucks.

Film actors are immortalized if they're in a good film. But there are many tiers and types of actors: the ones that get millions of dollars per film (and may or may not be good), those who are great actors, not necessarily superstars. And then then the rest: the vast majority of actors eek out a living with day jobs and if they're lucky get a small role here and there.
Now the best of the best, say Bogie, Attenborough, Burton, Welles, Pacino, or the women: Taylor, Hepburn, Bergman, de Havilland I tend to put on a pedestal of sorts (and I've got some of their autographs).
Having met some actors I know they are just regular people, some with talent, and some more promotion and hype than talent. But there are very few current actors in new films that have much value. I think some posters here hate actors for political reasons; they just want them to "shut up and act". Then they may as well watch a video superhero game instead. Of course no matter how bad an actor is, they cannot possibly compare with the idiocy that is Kanye.
