What did you watch this week people of the world? (28/06-04/07)

Hi there, hey there, ho there! I hope you had a good week. Mine was pretty weak but that’s on me for picking crapass movies. I’m on vacation for a week though so next week I’ll make better picks, promise.

Cult of Chucky (2017 Netflix): I can’t say that it’s totally bad but it is excessively ridongculous. What else to expect right? I was left partially satisfied. 5 /10

Les 7 jours du Talion (“Seven days” 2010 TV): “ A doctor seeks revenge by torturing and killing the man who c and murdered his young daughter.” Another solid film from my province that I was missing out on. Except for the cold blue colour that they used for the entire film, I thought that everything was solid. 7/10

The meg (2018 Netflix): I know that movies like sharknado can be fun so much they are bad but this one falls in the other category. It is bad and beyond. It’s dumb and not-funny. I could waist some of my time to pick it apart and mention the things that don’t work (almost everything) but I won’t. I’ll just say that the scene that I was anticipating the most (The one with all the people swimming) was as bad as the rest and I declare this “worst movie of the year”: 3/10

The intern (2015 TV) This one has its moments but otherwise it was repetitive, cheesier than a 5 cheese pizza and although played well, De Niro’s character was irritatingly perfect. 5/10

Overnight delivery (1998 TV): What a bad title for such a good movie. I’m about to make a statement so brace yourselves: this is Paul Rudd’s best performance of his career! There, I said it. otherwise I’m surprised I never saw this in my youth because this is really my type of comedy. 7/10

The bad batch (2016 Netflix): Yes it is slow, there’s not much dialogue and there’s not much going on but if you let yourself be immersed in it, it’s quite enjoyable. Jim Carey capturing the crow was a great scene. Ribisi is slightly superfluous and over-the-top and Keanu Reeves almost ruined every scene he was in so much he was awkward. Plus, what was up with all his s**t talk? What he said about tomatoes was interesting though. Otherwise, it’s a pretty cool film. The final scene made my heart melt for no reason at all and for a bunch of other reasons. Oh and I award this movie for “best shorts ever put on screen.” My rating: 6.5/10

Insidious: chapter 3 (2015 TV): Note that I think that this franchise is better than most horror movies dealing with spirits and hauntings. That being said, the last half hour of this one was okay but the rest is mediocre. My rating: 5/10
(insidious: 6.5, insidious 2: 6/a10)

Pacific rim: uprising (2018 Netflix): I had read the critics and I saw the trailer so I kind of knew what to expect (a bad and childish movie) but I still had a feeling that I might enjoy it so much the special FX looked great and I really liked the first one. So I watched it and yeah, no, It’s a vapid piece of world. The FX were acceptable at times but the story/action was mediocre at best. 4.5/10

I was digging around in some boxes still packed from my move. I found 4 unopened seasons of Tales From the Crypt (1992)Season 4-7. I started watching season 4 and there are some pretty famous people in the first few episodes..Tom Hanks and Dylan McDermott. So far I'm liking it. Sadly I had to go out and buy a 24$ DVD player since I didn't have one anymore:)

reply

Old episodes of Tales From the Crypt sound great!

Tales From the Crypt

Season 3 Episode 14

Titled: Yellow - Episode aired 28 August 1991

Kirk Douglas with his son Eric Douglas.
Not gonna say anymore but it's my favorite Tales... episode and one of my favorite videos ever. It's the second highest rated Tales... episode on IMDb.com

Have fun.

reply

Well I'm pretty happy I found the DVDs. I bought a stationary bike before the first lockdown but never used it. Well now that I have the 20 minute episodes of pure fun I've actually started using it. I only have season 4-7 but Youtube does have most of the early seasons 2 and 3.

reply

Got it only on Youtube..I'll let you know. The intro looks pretty serious..

reply

I'm going to watch this but here's a tip don't recommend war movies/tv to girls..Ahhhh
***unless its Twilight Zone Deaths Head Revisited:)

reply

I’d watch that. The only one I remember are the tales from the hood.

The Gorgon (1964) - good role reversal in this one between Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Another fine Hammer production with the usual supporting cast and sets. 6.5/10

The Seventh Cross (1944) - a fine movie about Nazi Germany in 1936 and an escapee from a concentration camp. Spencer Tracy is great in the lead. A great thriller. Interesting that it was shot in 1944 when the true story behind the camps was just becoming known to the world. 7.5/10

White Boy Rick (2018) - another biopic that didn't work like last week's Lucy In The Sky. Would have been entirely unwatchable if it wasn't for Matthew M. The kid was fine but I guess the story just wasn't that interesting. 6.5/10

Death of a Scoundrel (1956) - Watch this for George Sanders performance as the ultimate cad. He has five attractive women to play with in this movie. There are some plot problems. It is loosely based on true events. 7/10

I always like when you post about old war films. If it’s something I haven’t seen I usually try to find it.

reply

I am always amazed when I come across a decent war movie that I haven't seen before or heard of. One of the great things about MC.

None of yours this week.

I thought the Meg was rather funny, just not in a good way.

Ready or Not (2019) 6.5/10 It was everything I thought it was going to be, and all in all I didn't think it was that bad. I enjoyed watching it.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 7/10 Much better than I was expecting. I didn't mind the swap of the characters, but I think that it did showcase the Rock's lack of range. I watched it for fun, and that's what I had so I can't really complain about much.

To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995) 6.5/10 I hadn't seen this in almost 20 years and I think I enjoyed it a lot more when it first came out. It wasn't bad, but it was very by the numbers. I think Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has held up better.

Hamilton (2020) 8.5/10 I feel like I'm one of the only people in this world who doesn't list Hamilton as their favourite musical. I think the music is incredible. I've had the soundtrack for several years now, and think that Miranda is a freaking genius....but I really like musicals that make me feel something towards the characters, and this one I just didn't connect with. I thought that I might seeing it, but not so far. I do have tickets to see it in person next August, so I hope I can with Covid, and I hope I like it better.

Project Almanac (2015) 7/10 I hadn't heard of this movie going into it. While it had it's problems like every time travel movie, I actually enjoyed watching it. I think the 7 might be too high of a rating, but a 6.5 seemed too low.

reply

Ready or not: fun 7/10

I think I own project almanac

I am re watching the soap opera REVENGE on IMDb TV. Love that show. On Season 3 now.

Watched 2/3 of NETFLIX's Space Force last night. Better than expected. Funny. LOL.

reply

Space force looks alright. Glad you had fun!

reply

Finished it. It was very good throughout the first season.

If you like Steve Carell and nutty comedies you may like this one.

I love shark movies and wanted The Meg to be a huge hit and instant classic but it didn't quite do that. Still an enjoyable flick.

8 or 9/10

Howdy Stonekeeper!

I haven’t seen any of your’s yet for this week but I do have the book Meg around somewhere. Sounds like the movie didn’t do it any justice.

Mine for the week:

Excalibur (1981)
This one is my favorite Arthur tale complete with a cast of stars before most of them had made it big. I love everything about this film from the gritty combat to the way everything is shot with a slight glow. I used to watch this one a lot as a kid on VHS and it never gets old.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Rob Zombie crazy family horror flick here that reminded me a little of Spider Baby. It just didn’t live up to the hype for me but it was nice seeing Sid Haig.

The Longest Day (1962)
This D-Day epic is another I watched many times as a kid. This viewing left me wishing they had shown more of Richard Burton out of this cast of stars. It’s hard to watch the landings without comparing them to Saving Private Ryan. It feels like The longest Day went for showing the massive size of the invasion while SPR focused on the carnage.

Last Tango in Paris (1972)
Two people meet daily in an apartment for sex without knowing much about one another. Great performance by Brando, but I was shocked at how sleazy his character was. There’s a lot going on under the surface in this one. Highly recommended.

What Have You Done to Solange (1972)
Excellent school girls in peril giallo here that Includes Camille Keaton in her first role. Shocking story with lots of twist.

Jacob’s Ladder (1990)
After a Vietnam Vet returns home he starts to have hallucinations. This is the first time I’ve seen this since the 90’s and I still have some questions about what’s really going on. I can’t believe I didn’t remember Macaulay Culkin was in this.

Planet Terror (2007)
Over the top infected people On the rampage movie. I enjoyed the other half of Grind house much more than this one.

reply

Hi!

Jacob’s ladder: my favorite horror. 10/10

Planet terror: improved slightly on research. 6.5/10

Howdy Ho!

I rated The Bad Batch last week, and I think that's the only one from your list that I've seen (The Intern is either on my list, or I have seen it but can't remember :D Happens sometimes.)

This week I watched:

I finished The Act (2019): One of the best (mini)series for me recently. I love when there's a true story in the background, it always has me reading up on the real life characters etc. after the show is over. 8/10

Good Boys (2019): I expected worse, but it was cute and funny at the same time. But I don't think 6th grade boys are this innocent nowadays. 7,5/10

reply

Yo!

Good boys: fun. 7/10

reply

Howdy👋
I enjoyed The Meg and Pacific Rim quite a lot but I just happen to love big dumb summer movies in general

I watched a lot but the standouts were...

The Outpost (20) similar to Blackhawk Down, a US combat group gets hit hard by the Taliban and inflict maximum damage on the enemy...by the middle of the final firefight I'm guessing those 'bans were wishing they had slept in that day!
Oh, and Eastwood's son is in it and boy does he look like daddy

My Friend Dahmer (17) it doesn't cover the period of his murders but examines his final year in high school just prior to his crimes...Very creepy and sad

Seinfeld Marathon...I've seen every episode at least 3 times over the years, I never get sick of it😃

*OOPS, ETA The Town (10) Affleck's second major directing project still holds up, it might be Renner's best performance and Rebecca Hall is a stunner😍

reply

Always a pleasure to have you here shogun.

The town: 6.5/10

reply

I apologize...I have to keep
better records, no offense Amigo
