If you were sitting at a bar and two men were having a conversation about football. And the one guy is obviously kind of naive about the sport. The naive guy asks the other what his favorite team is. The other fella responds "the niners". The naive guy looks at him kind of stumped and says "San Fransisco 69'ers" back. The fan cracks up laughing hysterically as well as a few others who overheard it. The naive guy replies, well I'm sure that it's a double digit and not just a single. And the fan replies "the 49ers". Is that really that funny? Myself I've only ever heard of "69" spoken of before and not "49". Where's the relevance?

I hate sports so any time anyone asks me questions like "Who you got for the Stuperbowl?" I say something like "The Dodgers, 'cause I think Carmelo Anthony is a great goalie!".

Never heard the term "Miner 49'er?"

Not really funny but remember that there is always a baseline security joke that people use like a tight rope safety net. From as old as "So I bit 'em" and "Luke, I am your father" to modern ">insert Republican name< is dumb, huh?" So You have to allow for people clinging to unfunny shit or they'd wallow in a joyless life. Not exactly like your scenario but indicative of a person's ability to find any lame thing funny. An Eskimo would laugh at you if you didn't know their most common word for snow. Especially if your guess was a euphemism for mutual simultaneous oral sex.
A similar phenomenon exists in what people find attractive in others. Put a random person on the spot and they will 90% likely say the name of the most popular actress/actor at the time.

Most of us have some minor aspect of ourselves that is sheep style if only because we don't have the time to know any better.
