What did you watch this week champions of the world? (21/06-27/06)

Hey there MOVIECHAT Champions. Keep on rocking this planet and keep on watching some movis. That's what I've been doin'. Now, apparently, Im contracted by the Head Office to tell you what I watched this week:

The sweet hereafter (1997 TV):SPOILERS I really f***ed up with this one. The ending left me puzzled and confused because I thought the earlier scene of father-daughter incest was the dude’s girlfriend. So the big finale didn’t have the impact it should’ve. Otherwise I enjoyed this dialogue driven drama. 7/10

Hard to kill (1990 TV): This is amongst Seagal’s best work. The story is poorly structured, we got bad guys shooting their guns all over the place, the soundtrack’s filled with hard riffs of heavy-metal guitar and booming percussions, the main character is called Mason Storm, the acting ranges from “uninspired” to “over the top”, the final fight ends by a hand-twist followed by a 5 seconds choke, so on and so on. Except for the sex scene beside the fireplace that kind a repulsed me for some reason, I enjoyed rewatching this crap for the first time since 20 years. 6.5/10

Killing Zoe (1993 DVD): The movie starts slowly and is way less crazy than I thought it would be except maybe for that cat scene. The thing is, I was enjoying the chemistry that was building between the male and female characters and then they make it end abruptly and she is replaced by a bunch of unlikeable dudes. The script is very simple, heavy on dialogue but also effective and I feel like I felt like I was supposed to feel. It’s just that I wasn’t always enjoying how I felt, ya feel me? I had to read a little but to pick up on the meaning of the title. Hint: it’s related to blood. Did you get it? It makes the film a bit better. rating: 6.5/10

Spirited away (2001 Netflix): I finally got to see this acclaimed animated family fantasy and what I thought would be a charming, sweet and beautiful movie was actually a nightmarish and hellish story of a little girl getting traumatized nonstop. Also, I wasn’t a big fan of all these spirits. I appreciated the originality and the inspiration but watching it alone at night would’ve been better than during the day with the kids. My rating: 7/10

RON JEREMY IS IN THE MOVIE JUST LONG ENOUGH TO GET SHOTGUNNED...ABOUT 5 SECONDS🤪...AND ERIC STOLTZ...I OWN THE DVD AND THATS ALL I REMEMBER.

I think Spirited Away would be fine for kids, honestly. Kids are tougher than a lot of people give them credit for. Old-school fairy tales for children were pretty hardcore before Disney came along.

I watched a few movies in the last week.

Bridge of Spies (2015) 2/10. I hated this movie. Awful right-wing propaganda schlock. It was ok in the first half, when it was about Rudolf Abel and Tom Hanks' character defending him in his trial, until the second half began when the setting shifted to Europe and the movie started bashing the viewer over the head every. single. interminable. second. with this right-wing anti-communist propaganda that had all the subtlety of a dump truck crashing through a china shop. The portrayal of east Germany was the most outlandishly ridiculous thing I've ever seen. To call it "over-the-top" wouldn't even do it justice. It was beyond the stratosphere. I thought Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain" was bad in this regard, but that was nothing next to this insanity. At least in Hitchcock's movie the communists were depicted as something resembling actual humans (I mean, they were still caricatures and clearly "the enemy", but they at least had personalities and some of them were quite likable, unlike this movie where they were just monsters who seemed to devote every second of their lives to ruining everything for everybody just because they apparently hate freedom and happiness), and east Germany didn't look like some kind of post-apocalyptic hellscape. The only reason I give this… thing… 2 stars instead of 1, is because the first half was alright and the portrayal of Rudolf Abel was actually pretty decent, the only communist in the movie who seemed like a human with a human personality rather than a propaganda caricature.

So, the above one was a first for me, but the other movies I saw in the last week are ones that I've seen a lot of times before.

Lord of War (2005): 7/10
Trumbo (2015): 9/10
The Silence of the Lambs (1991): 10/10

I actually watched all three of the above movies in their Japanese dubs rather than the original English. I think Trumbo is much better in English than the dub, The Silence of the Lambs is amazing in English but also still pretty good in Japanese (the voice actors couldn't quite replace Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, but that's a pretty high bar and they did well IMO). Lord of War is, if anything, better in its Japanese dub than in English. Though it's still pretty good either way.

reply

Hey bud!

Are we ever going to know what are your origins? Are u even slightly Japanese?

Lord of war: 8/10
The silence of the lambs: 8.5/10
I own bridge of spies but I doubt I’ll be affected as you were cuz I’m an ignorant

reply

THE JAPANESE DUB VIEWING HAS ME CURIOUS NOW TOO.

Major fan of Killing Zoe (1993) right here! I worked in drafting / design for years and anytime a coworker would spread a map across a table I would say “Where did you get this?” The entire drug section of this film is bat shit crazy and I absolutely love Eric. This is just one of those movies that you walk away from with so many funny quotes like “Do you like Viking films? You know, with the big fucking horns?” Did you notice Ron Jeremy takes a shotgun blast to the chest in the beginning of the bank heist?

Mine this week:

Jungle Warriors (1984)
A group of 80’s models go to do a photo shoot in the jungle somewhere in South America when their plane is shot down by a drug warlord. It’s as cheesy as it sounds. Exploitation at its finest.

Death Wish 3 (1985)
Paul Kersey is at it again but this time with the help of the chief of police and a group of old folks. I’ve seen this one many times and it never stops giving laughs.

The Conformist (1970) In the 30’s an assassin for the Italian fascist secret police is sent to Paris to carry out a hit on his college professor. Absolutely gorgeously shot film.

reply

Haha, I didn’t notice Mr Jeremy.

The conformists looks good.

Bright 2017.

I put t his flick on my list the day it came out and just watched it last night haha. It was better than I expected, very good actually. It had some odd parts that didn't seem to work but overall a very good movie.... If you like Will Smith.

Riot (2015)

A cool prison movie with some people you've probably heard of.
Dolph Lundgren
Chuck Liddell
Chuck's acting was interesting. Not as bad as I thought it would be.
If you like violent fighting flicks, try it out.

V for Vendetta (2005)

Seen it SO many times so I decided to watch it again... LOL

reply

Yo!

Bright: 6/10
I’d watch riot.
V for vendetta: 9/10

If you want something for kids, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Ponyo are probably a better way to go.

i completely agree, with the caveat that i haven't actually watched ponyo yet. kiki's and totoro have been favourites of mine for years, and i revisited both recently. i'll be getting to ponyo sooner rather than later.

reply

Hard to Kill just doesn't look that interesting to me, so I never go around to it.

reply

SEAGAL HAS A PONY TAIL AND HE IS HARD TO KILL...WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?🙂

reply

I'm not a big fan of Seagal though.

reply

🤬SOMEONE NEEDS A TIMEOUT!....AND ITS ME.

reply

hard to kill also has, to me, the single greatest and most stupid one liner in any action film.

it's been 30 years since i saw it (in the theatre, thank you very much), and i'm still laughing over that line.

reply

Theres quite a few ones. Which is yours? The bloodbank? Personally, I loved the hide and seek scene.

reply

the blood bank!!!

i don't remember a single thing about that movie except for that line. i'd happily watch it again, but it doesn't look like it's streaming anywhere at the moment, at least not on any of the usual places i use.

Tremors: 7/10
Fruitvale and the lost boys are on my watchlist.
Focus: 6.5/10

I really liked Killing Zoe, but I haven't watched it in about 20 years so I might have to watch it again.

The Craft (1996) 6.5/10 Nostalgia wins out on this one and I still enjoy watching it every few years.

The Good Liar (2019) 7/10 A little torn on this one. I wanted to like it more than I did. I thought that Mirren and McKellen were great, and I didn't really mind the plot twists even though they were expected, I just think that the story could have been so much more.

Carnival of Souls (1962) 6.5/10 Tubi had a colour version of this, so I thought I would see if it added anything. I don't really think that it did. In fact I'd probably rate the black and white version higher. I find it so difficult to actually rate this movie because there is some great atmosphere mixed in with horrible acting, and super cheesy effects for this day and age, but there's just something great about it too.

No One Lives (2012) 8/10 Not rating this high because the movie was great or anything, I just had fun watching it!

The Golden Child (1986) 7.5/10 Nostalgia again, but I've always liked this movie. It was the first thing I remember seeing Charles Dance in and to this day when I see him I still call him brother Numspay (sp?)

reply

The craft: need to rewatch but liked it back then.

No one lives could be interesting.

The golden child been too long but PVR'd it recently.
