I hate video games.

I haven't played a single video game since I was a kid. Not one. This includes games like Angry Birds or something else found on a phone. I've seen my nieces and nephews play as well as my friends and this new generation of gaming reminds me why I stopped playing.

The objective of most games is to kill. Whether it's firing gun, Mario jumping on someone's head, Pac-Man eating a ghost or conjuring up a spell, the killing gets repetitive. You're then pretty much limited to sports and puzzle games.

Then there are the annoying bugs found throughout a game. This includes invisible walls, bad collision detection and broken seams. I also hate how you have to rely on the response of the controller to succeed. How many times do you press the button, but your gun didn't shoot? Bugs shouldn't affect me passing a game.

Then there's the bad voice acting on all games. I can't think of a single performance that I would put close to someone in movies or TV. And they're all part of some convoluted story.

Then there's the fans. But I won't get too much into that because that's a whole other topic. I'll just say that I don't think video games players are athletes.

Finally, doctors say that video games are the worst form of media for your attention span. Kids can't just sit down, watch a movie and focus on a story anymore, they need to be doing something with their constantly and need something that they can control at their own pace.

I hate video games. I hate 'em, I hate 'em, I hate 'em.

I only play fifa.

PES is better.

That raises another point: stupid AI. How many times do you score a goal and they immediately score one right after? Or when you keep hitting the "tackle" button but the other team keeps running, but when they brisk right by you, they steal it like it's nothing. Or when you want to highlight a specific player to control, it goes to surrounding players.

reply

That never happens with me.

FIFA always seems scripted like they cheat to win. EA denies it though. https://realsport101.com/fifa/fifa-is-definitely-definitely-not-scripted-claims-ea/

I mean sure, but to me that sounds like a game that isn't fine-tuned.

samoanjoes- I loathe 'em too. Like anything else, they can be played for an hour as a diversion. But they seem to be one of the those things that is terribly addicting.

Kids sit for hours and hours playing this mindless drivel. Now I haven't got anything against "mindless drivel". I like to goof off myself sometimes. But these games contribute to the obesity rates in kids and teen-agers. They sit for hours on their rear ends playing this stuff instead of getting outside, riding bikes or doing something physical.

Adults even get into this staring mindlessly at a screen. That's also why I hate cell phones. I've worked with people who can never remove the phone from their hands. They sit and play silly nonsense like Candy Crush while they should be WORKING.

I've wanted to say, "hey you are at work now. Put the idiot phone down and do some work."

reply

I agree. Video games just seem so "in your face" and "check your brain at the door" kind of nonsense. You notice how we never hear about people having trouble focussing on video games but we hear about it for movies and books?

reply

Quality matters. I play games with stories. I learned a ton from playing a game which took place during the American Revolution. It was interactive so I helped Ben Franklin, Washington, and other revolutionaries. I participated at the Boston Tea Party and Paul Revere's run. I was able to explore historical Boston and New York. A lot of the game was in a Native-American language. Plenty of history info to read during this game.

Some AI can be shockingly smart. I once recreated Angelina Jolie in a game. Her married neighbors welcomed her to the neighborhood. But, then the husband whistled. I never had a neighbor react like that and wondered how the AI knew she was attractive. His wife slapped him.

I'll also just hangout in a game to watch a sunset or listen to street musicians. It can be scenic.

Strategy games can be nonviolent. And educational. I created a village and decided to concentrate on farming and mining. No army. My villagers were happy peaceniks. Then, they were slaughtered and their village destroyed by invaders. I never complained about government military spending after that.

reply

I agree, but I said most games are like what I was describing.

reply

Most of anything is poor or mediocre. I buy the best. I also have a video game bias because I taught myself to code and created a few. I admire what pros can accomplish because it takes a tremendous amount of work.

I agree that people, especially kids, need to spend more time in the real world. Limit playing video games.

The reason people focus on video games is because their input brings about results. You can watch the same movie a million times over and realize how stupid the main character is being but you can't do a damn thing to stop the misadventure they're a willing party to. How does watching someone else do something that you have no control over possibly demand a person's attention?

Good storylines will, sure. But they're few and far between and most aren't worthy of a reconsideration after the first viewing.

Watching people play video games sells out arenas.

reply

Can you cite this? I know there are professional "esports" but I've never seen a large gathering* of people just to watch people play a game. I also know that YouTube has a number of videos about games but most are tutorial in nature.

*By "arena" I'm taking it you're talking tens of thousands of people.

This one is from 2014 where 40,000 packed a stadium to watch League of Legends.

There's this one also from 2014. It's behind a paywall but you can see a picture.

That's a good catch. I really didn't know that. I can't speak for them but I don't watch people do what I can do myself. I think these are somewhat novel events and hopefully won't become the norm anytime soon.

reply

I used to like video games but no longer have the patience for any of them.

The OP sounds like he has not played a game since the 90s, going by his description.

He also seems to think there are only a couple of genres, but he left out driving games, platformers, role playing etc.

I would describe myself as a casual gamer, and I play foe a few hours now and again. I can't play for more that two hours at a time, thats too much. I am currently working my way through The Last Of Us 2.

You should not tar all gamers with the same brush. I am 60 years old and work full time. Gaming is one of the many things I do to relax on my time off.

reply

I mentioned that I haven't played since I was a kid, but I witness a lot of other people playing. I didn't leave out driving games, platformers or role playing games. I said you're pretty much left with sports (which includes driving) and puzzle games. I also mentioned games like Mario, which is a platform game, you still kill. Role playing games you can still kill. They all can still have bad collision detection and bad AI.

reply

I play the older games like Half-Life. Deus Ex, and all of the Tom Clancy games.

reply

"The objective of most games is to kill."

Nope, the object of games is to stupefy young people so they'll buy rubbish and believe nonsense.

reply

I tried to be nice.

reply

No no, I wasn't attacking you! Sorry if it came across that way. But that's been my opinion of video games for a long time.

Matter of fact, I was more or less agreeing with your disdain for them.

reply

I know you weren't. I was saying that I could have said the same thing as you, but I tried to be nice.

reply

Oh. Well, I'm blunt sometimes. It's my manner.

reply

It's cool. I was the original poster so if I wrote that, I would have had a swarm of people after me.

reply

Yes, very likely. :/

reply

yeah your also inconsiderate and disconformity a don't try understand people with mental disabilities asshole you hurt me and my community im having a meltdown cuz of this

reply

I'm no fan of video games either, but I can understand the occasional diversion. My adult children play them sometimes when we all get together (but yeah, the virus - so it's been a while). They do it for an hour or so at night after the grandchildren are in bed. It's their time to visit and unwind. But they're also cycling through the nighttime shower routine while doing this, meaning players come and go. I don't play, so I may sit with them for a few minutes to visit, but after that I'd rather just head to bed and read for a while.

reply

I can understand an occasional diversion as well, but the rising number of children with ADD because of it is concerning.

reply

I quite like them (and I'm definitely not a kid). I like a lot of different kinds but I'm playing the hell of of Doom Eternal, currently. It's WAY more difficult than a movie! ;)

reply

Play a game like journey you will have magical experience. Go and watch video of journey now

Or play game like manhunt in the dark night and see how you sweat and have fear

So games have many ways of emotion and are good
