Being polite is being fake

I hate it. Society wants me to be polite otherwise I'll come across as a sociopath.

So I laugh at jokes that aren't funny. I smile when people greet me or say goodbye.

I'll apologize to smooth things over when I may not be remorseful, all for politeness.

It sucks. I hate being fake.

I see your point about phoniness. But considering how rude and disrespectful people are today. It would be nice if respect for your elders, or people in general, plus courtesy made a comeback. I am so sick of all this "shaming" and "being authentic" crap. If you want to be treated like a gentleman or lady, act like one! Really people!?

Wow, truth BOMB!
Well stated👍

I don’t put respect in the same category as politeness. I think respect is a must. Politeness and proper etiquette are not things that concern me. Being authentic just means being yourself, why is that crap?
I don’t expect to be treated like a lady, but I do expect to be treated with respect. I also don’t expect others to act a certain way just because I think it’s the right way to act.

You get used to it. You don't have to live in society. Go join a biker gang and run drugs and shoot people. But there's a whole new set of rules to follow over there. There's rules to all things, no matter where you go.

There was advice that Machiavelli had for Italian Princes during the Renaissance, and that was:

“Be as nice as one can, but never be entirely devoted to the idea of acting nicely.”
