It's probably hard for people under 50 to appreciate how wondrously high-tech we considered IBM typewriters back in the day.

i remember the first one that had a digital display.

Why the hell would anyone do that? Can anyone explain?

Seriously, I suppose I can see why someone might want to collect objects that are a joy to behold or valuable, like jewels or cars or even pop culture stuff they love, but... typewriters? They aren't beautiful, valuable, or interesting.

I've known this about him for quite a while. It's not as weird as folks who collect door knobs, feathers, toenail clippings, Pez dispensers, barf bags, erasers, toothbrushes, banana stickers, or belly button lint. I think old typewriters are kinda cool.

I have Charles Lindbergh's barf bag from The Spirit of St. Louis. It is my most treasured possession.

Just Kidding!

I remember this!

If one has Tom Hanks' money he/she can collect anything.

reply

Very true! He can build a separate building to house his typewriters. And visit them every day if he feels like it. šŸ˜

Jerry Seinfeld owns a parking garage in NYC where he keeps his car collection (I believe most of them are Porsche.)

reply

If I had Hank's money I would collect cars or model cars or airplanes. Hah-hah.

reply

I don't get why most rich guys would collect cars. If I had Hanks' money I would rent a different car every month or so. That's way I can drive all the Ferraris and Lambos and all the classic cars in the world, not just like 100 that I would own if I collect them.

Thereā€™s a documentary (that I didnā€™t see mentioned in any comments) called California Typewriter. Itā€™s really well made, super interesting, and it has a few interviews with Hanks, who explains his fascination with typewriters. There are some other surprising public figures who like them too.

I donā€™t understand whatā€™s not interesting about them... Maybe you donā€™t want to use or own one, but the correspondence it produces couldnā€™t be more different from an email. Or an inkjet-printed, Word-processed computer file.

I came across this movie on Tubi today. Yes, I watched it. It was interesting and I realized that some folks just prefer analog, which is what a typewriter is. It doesn't mean that they don't appreciate computers, smart phones, etc. or that they're a luddite. They simply prefer the old technology. They appreciate the process rather than just the result.

In ā€œYouā€™ve Got Mailā€ Greg Kinnearā€™s character is into typewriters. I wonder if that was Hankā€™s idea.
