What did you watch this week colleagues? (14/06-20/06)

Life is super crazy and slowly going back to the normal crazy. Let's all enjoy simple pleasures of life while staying safe shall we?

As for movies:

A family man (2016 TV): What a well acted, well written and powerful little film! I felt so strongly for the characters that I can barely explain why. Simple, true, honest, deep and sad. And by all that I mean that I cried like a baby. a Metascore of 21 and tomatometer of 13% is just inhuman. Bunch of fucking robots. Critics might be uncomfortable with Butler playing in a drama, especially with the two crap movies he made before this one. My rating: 7.5/10

The meaning of life (1983 TV): Terry Gilliam is one of my favourite directors but I’m not a huge fan of the holy grail, which I saw twice, so I wasn’t in a hurry to watch this one. First of all, it’s one of the craziest comedies I ever saw. Secondly, it’s one of the best comedies I ever watched. I regret waiting for so long but I loved pretty much every bit of it.
“The world is a beautiful place you must go into it and love everyone try to make everyone happy and bring peace and contentment everywhere you go”
. 8/10

Neighbors 2:Sorority Rising (2016 TV): I was a little bit drunk when I watched the first half but I finished it the next day and was quite enjoyable. I really liked the part where Zac Efron switch sides and Seth Rogen asked him what he’s getting out of this and he answers “ honestly I just want to be valued”. The movie has a good energy although I could’ve done without the first scene and the party scenes were a bit crappy. My rating: 6/10

Parasite (2019 DVD): This was the most anticipated movie of the year for me and not only because of the Oscars but also because it’s one of my favourite directors. Parasite has been so hyped up that it was the obvious contender to become my favorite film from him but it did not succeed. It is a great movie and some scenes are amazing but it didn’t get to me that much. My rating: 8/10

Bong Joon Ho:
Barking dogs never bite: 9/10
The host: 8/10
Parasite: 8/10
Mother: 7.5/10
Snowpiercer: 7.5/10
Okja: 7.5/10
Tokyo!: 7.5/10

I haven't seen yours and sure won't watch Anatomie de l'enfer!

Have you seen mine?

reply

i've always wanted to see anatomy of hell. i know it's got a choppy reputation, but from what i've seen, even breillat's bad films are bad in interesting ways.

Took ya long enough to post this! How dare you put your own life and needs ahead of my Moviechat needs! I will forgive you, but this is your final warning.

I knew you would threaten me! I knew it! That's why I already hired the best lawyer there is. He's from the hownos and shogun firm.

Army of darkness: 8/10

reply

I could take on Hownos and Shogun blindfolded in my sleep. Those guys don't scare me at all!

reply

Boy, you sleep HARD!

reply

vampyres is absolutely not a great or even half good movie, but i have fun watching it. for some reason, it was the second dvd i bought (after beyond the valley of the dolls, of course).

reply

Watched John Wick 1 & 2 - for some reason never saw them in the theater.

Movies

- Back to the Future (1985)
I finally saw this one on the big screen! A classic, one of my favourite 80s movies.

-Iced (1988)
Only watched this because I liked the idea of seeing a horror version of Ski School. In reality it's an EXTREMELY low budget slasher that's kind of The Room, Troll 2 and Birdemic all rolled into one. The sex scenes were really awkward and almost pornographic.

-Die Hard (1988)
Yeah, I know it's a movie everybody loves, but it's not for me. I don't mind cheesy action movies, but this one's way too silly and actually quite boring as well.

TV Shows

- Blackadder - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-The Golden Girls - marathon

-Fawlty Towers - The Builders

-Harper's Island - "Whap" and "Crackle"
I've already seen this one, but I'm doing a rewatch with someone who hasn't seen it yet. A cheesy B movie slasher stretched out over 13 episodes. Definitely better than Iced.

reply

Back to the Future (1985): 8.5/10

Die Hard: huh!? ;) 8/10

I didn't know you enjoyed B movie slashers. Something in common with Shogie.

reply

I know, but he's a big fan of Italian giallos, when I'm absolutely not!

reply

i don't think i've ever seen meaning of life all the way through, but i think i know all the sketches from hearing the guys in my high school repeat all the lines constantly.

parasite's almost a perfect movie for me. 5/5

my week:

that obscure object of desire (1977) 5/5 i've spent the past 4 years or so doing my homework, trying to eat my cinematic vegetables and get to the sight and sound approved films.

and i have to say, of all the greats, bunuel is almost certainly my favourite. he's definitely the most entertaining. all of his films are filled with humor and an appreciation for the absurd. plus they aren't a billion hours long. unlike so many of the elite directors i've worked through, he seems to have taken the average human attention span into account.

this might be my favourite so far. at the least, it's his most entertaining to me.

the lodge (2019) 3.5 a bit long on atmosphere & short on tension in its middle section - at some point around the 1hr mark, i felt like i fell out of the film's grasp & started to be consumed by thoughts like 'let's just get on with things already, please.'

satisfying & unsettling ending though. definitely worth a watch by all means, but i wish it had been just a little leaner, & didn't have a few plot contrivances that i found maybe a touch silly.

cannibal ferox (1981) 3 in every way, this is not as good as that other one.

but it still is pretty fun if this is where your tastes run.

the phantom of liberty (1974) 3.5 all the bunuel films i've seen have had a strong sense of the absurd, of verging on pure silliness at times, but this is the most openly silly, surreal & absurd one. and it's quite baudy in places, which is something i always enjoy. bring back casual nudity in films.

it's episodic nature made it feel just a little slight & minor, compared to say... belle du jour or whatever. and i found myself tiring of it just a bit towards the end. even though it's relatively short, it started to feel just a bit long.

v/h/s (2012) 3.5 seems to be settled opinion that the sequel improved on this, and i guess i agree. i still find plenty to enjoy in it, though.

tristana (1970) 3 just a few days ago, i was ululating to the world that bunuel was the one classic prestige director who could do no wrong in my books. i had to say that, naturally, because here i am two days later not digging this one at all.

it has it's moments, most of them front-loaded, but i was mostly bored by this disappointingly normal melodrama. three stars because bunuel clearly loved ogling deneuve's perfect face.

mausoleum (1983) 3 marjoe goertner is the least cool actor i've ever seen in a film. even his name is ridiculous. it's incredible to me that somebody like that regularly got gigs.

has generous amounts of nudity, & some fun, silly looking effects, & while the story is no classic, the whole thing chugs along reasonably well. i was not bored, which is all i ask for when i hit play on something as dubious looking as this.

castle in the sky (1986) 3 my second crack at this one, and i once again found it to be not very enjoyable.

i dig everything else i've seen from miyazaki, from the studio, but i find this one too long & the story and the characters a bit unengaging.

spirited away (2001) 5 first time i've watched the english dub.

i know people get very sniffy about dubs, but i think they're generally fine for animated films. the only issue here is i think a few lines get changed pretty substantially - the joke about the guy's ass getting bigger, so there's more of it to kiss got completely dropped, for some incomprehensible reason. is it because north americans are prudes?

you probably don't need me to tell you about this film.

my neighbor totoro (1988) 5 as above, my first watch with english dubs. it's still cute.

scare package (2019) 3 new horror anthology streaming on shudder. too long! they should have dropped at least one of the shorts, i'd say. it's perfectly entertaining & has lots of good gore. none of the segments really stand out as being great or exceptional, but they're all breezy and mostly fun.

it just should have been shorter.

life is sweet (1990) 4 not quite as high on the level of greatness as i've come to expect from leigh films. in particular, spahl's character is cartoonish, almost a caricature to me, and definitely feels out of step with with working class pulse leigh always has his finger on.

still very much worth the watch, with the richly textured characters you'd expect if you know his films.

princess mononoke (1997) 2 lots of people love this, obviously. i'm happy for them. it's a big world, and we're allowed to be different.

i was so bored and indifferent to this. and my god it was long.

at one point, i thought 'it's gotta be over soon, at least.'

& instead found that there were 55 minutes left.

not for me.

reply

pi (1998) 4 on any given day, depending on my state of mind, this is probably my favourite aronofsky. i love its raw, punkish energy and its nightmarish images that remind me of tetsuo and eraserhead.

i don't like it's math/religious/stock-market plot as much. that's just the buffer holding the good parts together imo. you could get rid of all that and not lose a thing.

mayhem (2017) 3.5 fun, violent, gory good time. contains a trope that i kinda hate (all corporate managers are inhuman monsters), but all told a very enjoyable watch.

the sublet (2015) 2.5 another crazed 'new mother has a meltdown/is it real, is it in her head?' affair. the problem i almost always find with these types is that when you find out what the actual answer is, it's generally kinda underwhelming. this sidesteps that, by (spoilers, i guess?) not really giving us an answer.

but it's watchable, moves along reasonably well. held my attention, never bored. the leads are pretty good, but some of the supporting actors, especially the french ex-girlfriend, were community theatre level, imo.

reply

Just looked Bunuel up, never heard of him. looks like quite the specimen.

The lodge is on my list.

I been trying to see Spirited away forever but I aint willing to pay 20$ for it.

Pi: My favorite director. 7/10

Mayhem: I think I own it.

reply

Meaning of Life - “Always look on the bright side of life” I made a CD of kids songs for my children when they were really young and I snuck this one on there. They loved it and listened to it for years. The Meaning of Life is almost as good as The Holy Grail, almost. 😀

Parasite - love the director and this film. 👍

Mine for the week:

What About Bob (1991)
I saw this one back in the day and I still think about baby steps sometimes. Watching it again now I laughed my ass off through the first half but it kind of tapered off after that. It always seems like Hooper went into psychology.

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971)
Fulci is best know for splatter horror, but this giallo mystery excellent. It was like every scene was meticulously shot. Beautiful film and a great score with a bit of a meandering plot that’s easily forgiven.

The Dam Busters (1955)
I’m a WWII Pacific theater buff so I went into the Dam Busters not knowing the true story which made the film all the more entertaining. Great movie and I was surprised to see Robert Shaw among the cast. I can certainly see it’s similarities to Star Wars.

Lucy in the Sky (2019) - This movie had Oscar buzz at one point. Portman did her best but the movie is a bore. 5/10

The Train (1964) - A forgotten WW2 movie. Some great performances and some great explosions and a wonderful train derailment. 8/10

Moss Rose (1947) - A British film noir with the beautiful and forgotten Peggy Cummins. There are some plot issues but this has a great atmosphere. 7/10

7500 (2019) - a post 9/11 hijacking movie where the emphasis is on the cockpit door. the movie is not as bad as the rating and it is ac decent suspenseful thriller. 6.5/10

reply

Damn, Lucy in the sky got destroyed! I didn't even know it existed.
