its a dietary regimen which relies upon, imo, an agrarian culture

Hi, 26 years veggie here. Im fortunate that I can choose to be vegetarian as I live in a country with lots of non meat food available year round.

If the apocalypse happened and I had to fend for myself I would think instinct would eventually take over and I would eat whatever was available.

___edit___

Anyone who is veggie/vegan are privileged to have the choice to do it. Many people are not so fortunate and already have to eat whatever is there to survive.

What if the cloud dust killed off all living vegetation on earth and animals soon followed. Would you eat the next available item on the menu?

reply

Sure, everyone would. And if they say no they are ill informed. When you are that hungry it is all you can think about.

reply

You’re alright....for a vegetarian. Lol 😝

reply

Obviously not a vegan.

reply

Vegans aren’t people.

vegan - hates the thought of killing animals; but also...doesn’t mind if you die from boredom while they tell you about it

reply

If it came down to cannibalism everyone's morals would be ancient history. The natural urge to survive would override everything else.

reply

Thanks lol. I'm just a practical person 👍

Well , id have to go to the back of the cupboard where there is
breathmints
toothpaste
lemon flavoured hand wipe
Pot noodle

Its obvious what'd be eaten last - i hate Pot Noodles!

reply

I love pot noodles! Not worth the money these days though.

Easily since they would only be consuming berries, mushrooms, and greens. Maybe the occasional blackroot since it’s been known to put hair on your chest. Also they wouldn’t have to waste energy on fishing and hunting.

Even in the warm months it would be impossible to survive by just foraging. Where are the calories coming from? There's a good reason why early humans were called "hunter gatherers" - they needed to survive!

And you can't murder an animal. The correct definition would be slaughter.

i'm a vegetarian, but i have no problem eating hunted meat, and if i was in that situation, i would kill animals or insects if i had to.

this post reminded me of a book i read years ago called 'catching fire - how cooking made us human.' it has a section on survivalist stories, and i remember one section in particular about a european woman who supposedly lived in brazilian jungles after escaping a tribe who'd kidnapped her by eating almost nothing but wild bananas for 7 months. supposedly, bananas are generally touted as one of nature's most complete foods, so it's certainly plausible a person could exist on them for an extended period.

i just googled the story - the woman's name was helena valero:

Maybe two weeks tops.

It would depend on how much wilderness survival knowledge they have, naturally, to know what plants are and aren't safe to eat and so on. Beyond that, I guess it would depend on whether they're able to store surplus food through the cold months. I can't imagine it would be a very nourishing lifestyle. In part because almost all possible good land in the world is already dominated by settled civilization, so this person in the wilderness would probably be living in poor land where not much grows that you can live on.

I'm not an expert on this stuff, but can a person live on only meat either? The OP suggests that through the cold months the person would be living solely on meat since no plant-based food would be actively growing at the time, but I wonder if that's actually enough to survive on. I would think that even ancient nomadic hunter-gatherers who ate meat would also store enough non-meat foods to be able to eat that during the winter. People need a varied diet (which isn't to say they always get one, but if there's a way, people will find it).

reply

You can survive by only eating animals. The Inuits do.
