StoneKeeper's Super Awesome Movie Guessing Game: I recommend THIS Movie #1096, Andhadhun (2018), winner LauraGrace1975

I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guess, I will give a hint that connects your guess with the movie I have in mind.

For each guess, a connection is posted. Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, actor, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve Cabbage Patch Kids. Also, you can use Metascore color or rating, Rotten Tomatoes score, any award wins or nominations in common, same number of words in the title, plot keywords.

Helpful search engine: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints and 13 guesses, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 IMDB votes. Otherwise, add a bonus hint.
- Maximum 2 guesses per player per hint.
- Can't edit a guess once posted. Delete ONLY

I saw it with English subtitles in a theater, where it ran for about two months. An English language remake could make a lot of money.

You added to the instructions "You can click on Feature Film and TV Movie to include all"

It has been well established by convention and general agreement that a Mystery Movie must come up with only "feature film" checked. There is no rule that a TV movie or documentary can't be used, but the custom has been for the host to declare up front that the Mystery Movie is a TV movie or documentary.

reply

It came up in the last game - It was a Japanese TV movie. This is NOT a TV movie.

After we finished, there was a discussion of just what you mention. the players had "no results" on our last search, until we changed that on our own.

reply

I took a look at the last game and I am surprised at FredBurroughs response. That's not my understanding of how we have been playing. But if that's the way it's going to be, fine.

reply

I don't see why it's so difficult to just check both boxes. I've been doing it since the game was first being played back around round 1 or 2, without ever even thinking about it. Both categories are just movies, and it's such a simple solution.

reply

Because of voluminous results when both boxes are checked.

reply

I don't remember that ever being an established custom or even mentioned before.

reply

i picked a tv movie by mistake a few months ago and i realized it halfway through and let everyone know. you have to be clear upfront if it is a tv movie.

reply

That's my understanding. But look at Fred's response to this in the last game (Ocean Waves). I don't know what to say right now.

reply

the game is on the verge of getting too obscure as it is. no tv movies and no docs.

reply

Oh come on.

reply

we went through this before with the docs.

reply

In my thread it was, at worst, a minor bump in the road. I had it narrowed down to literally one movie on all of IMDb. Fred and MonStar guessed it together within seconds of each other. You'd have us ban all TV movies? TV movies are just movies, not the same thing as documentaries, and there are quite a lot of good ones, including the one I recommended in the last round (which is one I'd had in mind as a game idea for quite a while).

reply

feature films only. there are plenty to choose from.

reply

I hosted Helter Skelter, aTV movie, and it wasn't a problem.

reply

[deleted]

Some do? Some dont?

reply

I tried and it did NOT come up, but I could swear it did before

reply

It did.i mean before, when I hosted it.

reply

that was an issue at the time. i think it was also the last one until i used In Thin Air by mistake.

reply

Negatory

reply

Well, I don't agree. I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill here and adding another restriction to the game is unnecessary and silly. This is just like when it was attempted to ban all movies under 3500 votes (actually I think it was originally even higher, but I can't remember the initial number) on the grounds that they're all too difficult. It's been demonstrated since that good hints can handle such movies just fine.

reply

I concur.

reply

some of the foreign feature films may actually be easier to guess because you can't give actor or award clues so you have to give more direct clues. so i have no problem with foreign feature films even though i don't tend to guess on movies i know i will never see.

docs and tv movies should be excluded. i thought we had an unwritten agreement on this.

reply

That was my understanding! But there seems to be support for adding TV Movies into the mix. I'm game to try, it means checking both boxes in advanced search. Fred said in the last game

It's the impetus of the players to figure out what kind of movie the host has in mind along with the title itself, especially if it falls well above the 3500 margin. All feature length movies are fair game.

reply

are there that many great tv movies out there that we should change a game that was working just fine?

reply

I'm going to PM StomeKeeper and ask him to read this discussion and respond

reply

I did a test search: over 3,500 votes, Drama, Rated between 6.0 and 6.9

The difference between having just feature film checked and both feature film and tv movie checked was much smaller than I expected.

I'm game for tv movies, but we have to have agreement

This doesn't address docs

reply

I'm for anything goes.

reply

I don't think documentaries qualify as movies, so I'm fine with excluding them. It would never have occurred to me to try using one. I am, of course, in favor of including TV movies.

reply

I've hosted at least 3 docs, but like nyctc said, they came up under feature film.

reply

Oh I see. Which docs? I guess I just assumed docs are a whole separate category because they're non-fiction.

reply

Gimme Shelter, 1970
American Movie, 1999 and Incident at Loch Ness, 2004

reply

Stephen Spielberg has argued that Netflix films are all TV movies, and he does not think they should be eligible for film awards. (Netflix will show them in a few theaters, just enough to meet the requirement.)

Streaming services are starting to make more movies, so this could come up more often. Disney is already making new sequels to their library (Hocus Pocus 2 and others). They want more content for their Disney-Plus pay service. I'm just guessing they will show up as Feature films on IMDB.

I don't subscribe to any streamers that charge money, so the films are just a big unknown.

reply

I'm going to PM StoneKeeper to have a look at this discussion and see what he says

reply

I would be willing to get rid of the 3500 limit. Just keep everything to feature films.

Django Unchained (2012)

Oh crap I just realized I haven't been checking to see that movies are unrated lol. My bad. In my defense I'm quite tired.
