'Gone with the Wind' removed from streaming services because it's racist

The highest boxoffice movie from all time*, Gone with the Wind, has been removed from streaming service.

The company that owns the streaming rights, HBO Max, has decided that the movie is racist and shouldn't be distributed.

*Yeap, 'Gone with the Wind' is the highest boxoffice ever. I'm talking about boxoffice adjusted by inflation. The 2nd highest one would be Star Wars (1977), then The Sound of Music (1665), then ET (1982) and then Titanic (1997).

To compare, when we adjust by inflation, Gone with the Wind made 2x the box office of Avengers Endgame and 3x the box office of Avengers Infinity War.

reply

More likely it's been removed because no-one is watching it.

reply

Your right. I’m sure their target audience doesn’t watch fine films like Gone With the Wind often.

reply

Is there anyone here who thinks this is a good idea? Anyone?

reply

Not me
It's a very bad idea and it sets a dangerous precedent

Older media (movies, books, music or TV) are like time capsules of the era they were created in
Even if we disagree with some of the content they can still be informative of what people were thinking in those times

Check out Griffith's The Birth Of A Nation (15) where the KKK are the heroes and save the day as a good example
That's absurd to us now but was 'truth' for a hell of a lot of people 100 years ago...it gives us some context as to why the rights movement was so chillingly violent for so long

reply

Browsing over the responses I would say that's one big NO Mojo.

reply

This is one of the few movies I own. I bought if from youtube a few months ago.

reply

They have not done their research. This movie was progressive back in 1939.
No black-faces on white people, no n-words, the KKK wasn't glorified as they were in the novel, the actress who played the mamy won an Oscar.

reply

This is what happens when you ignore problems and pretend a significant portion of the population don't matter, eventually people are forced to overreact.

reply

This is also what happens when a small radical segment overshadows legitimate concerns and causes people to overreact.

reply

No it isn't.

reply

That's true.

Of course, that applies to whites too. What will happen if whites eventually overreact to being systematically attacked and their cities burnt in the very own society they built? I let you imagine.

reply

Overreacting like electing a bigoted fascist for president of the US, mocking and propagandizing against cities with significant minority populations, an obsession to undo everything accomplished by a black president, building a giant wall on our southern border, deploying guardsmen to patrol the border, building concentration camps for brown skinned people and separating families, illegally imprisoning American citizens and denying them their right to counsel, asking foreigners to spy on and discredit Americans, inviting foreign interests into our election process, threatening to use US troops against American citizens, threatening to take over American cities with US troops, a president declaring random crimes to be domestic terrorism and blaming (sans evidence) it on a group that happens to be opposed to the same president in order to disarm and deny those American citizens their rights. Yeah, we wouldn't want any of those things to happen.

reply

Trump is great. It is not your fault that you can't see that.

reply

WOW. Them Hatfields sure are evil.

reply

At least you are admitting that what’s happening to Gone With the Wind is an overreaction.

reply

First: what the hell is “Yeap.”? Is it anything like “Yep”? Yeap rhymes with leap. Not an actual word, or even an ululation.

Gone With The Wind portrayed a racist culture and narrative. So it’s bad because it’s historically accurate? Or would you prefer to rewrite history?

Only the losers try to rewrite history. The victors have already written it.

reply

This!
I was going to come in here and write "This just in: All of history to be rewritten due to racism" but this says it all (even with the requisite R_Kane bibliophilic lashing)

reply

Personally i never saw it but now i think i will.

reply

Just go to the politics board for heaven's sake. I agree with you on this but please.
