What did you watch on this protesting week (31/05-06/06)

Let's keep our protesting peaceful lads and let's watch movies. Yes, yes.

My week:

Into the forest (2015 TV): This Canadian thriller has a solid cast, is shot like a pro, has a good premise and a good final act but for most part of the movie I failed to connect with the characters and barely cared about what happened. I also found some of the ideas implemented pretty dumb. My rating: 5/10

Team America: World police (2004 Netflix): Still fun and entertaining but slightly less funny then I remembered it to be. Some good jokes, just not as many as I thought. The background songs explaining the scenes were cool but when it was a character singing, it was pretty bad. My rating: 7/10

Jojo Rabbit (2019 Blu-ray): This movie reminded me of Moonrise Kingdom and I think it would please Wes Anderson fans. Waititi’s style is defined but similar. This was my fourth movie from him and my third favourite. Sam Rockwell was great and the rest of the cast was alright. The last 20 minutes was particularly special. My rating: 8/10

Let’s rate these for fun:
What we do in the shadows 9/10
Hunt for the wilder people: 8.5/10
Moonrise kingdom: 8/10

We die young (2019 TV): Some fans said that JCVD did a great job in this one. Well this fan right here dosn’t know if he did a great job or not but his character did not work at all. A mute that dosent use sign language...?? It made the conversations other character had with him very awkward and unnatural. He would sometime answer using Siri and sometime using his amazing facial expressions. Otherwise the movie is a mediocre gang movie with a good cast of young kids who brought an interesting energy to the film that made it almost worth it. Almost... but the crappy editing ruined most of it. My rating: 4.5/10

Saving Silverman (2001 TV): I always loved this movie. Each actor/actress is perfectly casted, Lee Ermey and Zahn both bring energy to this fast pace and hilarious comedy. I’d take a dose of Wayne before a dose of Stiffler any day of the week. My rating: 7.5/10

reply

I loved Jojo Rabbit
That chubby little boy Yorki is simply adorable! Gosh, I LOVED that little dude

Rockwell is amazing (as to be expected) and that Waititi guy seems like one to watch out for!

reply

He was adorable indeed. Did you see what we do in the shadows? It’s one of my favourite comedies.

reply

I’m with you on that: keep the protest peaceful. 👍👍

I haven’t seen any of yours this week but I have been curious about the Jojo Rabbit, as I see it talked about frequently here. I was hoping to see Bad Lieutenant on your list, but maybe next week. 😀
Mine this week:

The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971)
Sergio Martino directs this really stylish mystery starring the drop dead gorgeous Edwige Fenech. Anyone who isn’t familiar with Edwige should look her up. Great giallo entry here.

Harakiri (1962)
Every scene here is beautifully shot in the compelling 15th century samurai tale. The bamboo scene was pretty gut wrenching, pun intended. Highly recommended.

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly (1971)
Story about a weird family who kidnaps hippies and forces them to play house or else. This one is a cult classic that I’m not too impressed with after my first viewing. Maybe I’m missing something.

Goodfellas (1990)
No intro needed here. One of my favorites scenes is the long tracking shot from the back foot to seated in the restaurant. This one never gets old.

reply

Harakiri is truly one of the greatest movies ever made.

reply

I have thought about it quite a lot since watching it.

reply

The thing about bad Lieutenant is that I’m renovating my basement so I had to put all my DVDs in a closet so it’s gonna be hard to find right now.

I’ll have to see Hara-kiri someday for sure.

Goodfellas: hum, yeah. 10/10

reply

Hey how was JCVD in that one ?
Love saving Silverman as well
Then I read a little bit more .
America !!!

reply

Well, like I said, his character didn’t work for me so it made his acting pretty crappy. Just an example: there’s a scene where he’s smoking a cigarette and a girl tells him she thought he had quit then he throws the cigarette away and makes a face and she says “that’s what you said last time”. It was awkward.

What do you mean by The I read a little more?

reply

Peace and love to all!

My ratings of what you watched:
Team America: World police 8/10
Jojo Rabbit 9/10
What we do in the shadows 9/10
Moonrise kingdom 8/10

I have been meaning to see Hunt for the wilder people for a while now, but never got around to it. I haven't seen Into the forest, We die young or Saving Silverman.

My ratings of what I watched:
The Rhythm Section (2020) 5/10
The Weekend (2018) 7/10
Strange Brew (1983) 6/10
Empty Suitcases (1980) 8/10
Olivia (1951) 6/10
Come to Daddy (2019) 7/10
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) 8/10
The Hate U Give (2018) 9/10
The Owls (2010) 7/10
An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars (2012) 7/10
Out (2020, short film) 8/10
Lea to the Rescue (2016) 7/10

reply

Strange Brew!! Love the part when the dog rolls down the roof. 😀

reply

Hi!

Strange brew: Saw it for the first time a few years ago and expected ti like it way more. 6/10

Mike and Dave: could not finish

The hate U give: I found my reivew: Cons: -The first hour of the movie is filled with long and boring conversations between the characters, for which we don’t really care, yet.
-There are a few stupid moments that made me yell at the TV a little bit. (I.E: When the girl mentions the street gang’s name on live TV for absolutely no other good reason than for the plot to spiral down.)
Pros: -The second hour manages to switch what was an average teen movie into a gripping drama which makes the first hour more acceptable.
-The young actress was really good and cute. The actor playing her white boyfriend was good too. I wonder if we’ll see more of him. 7/10

Too busy to watch much this week. Only 3 movies and no tv! I'm a little shocked.

These are all my boyfriend's picks

Killerman (2019) 6/10 It wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. Predictable, but for mindless entertainment it was okay.

21 Bridges (2019) 7/10 Not bad, but not fantastic. I really like Chadwick Boseman so that helped my enjoyment of it. Again it was pretty predictable, but the cast saved it.

The Cold Light of Day (2012) 4.5/10 It was just meh. I liked the cast, but the movie was forgettable, and I had not logged it in Letterbox and we couldn't even remember the name. The only part I really liked was that Bruce Willis wasn't in it that much.

reply

These a typical man picks, the first two looking slightly interesting but I wouldn't even consider The cold light of day.

reply

Ford vs Ferrari 10/10

reply

such a guy movie

reply

Wow! Must be good to get 10/10.

reply

It is a very guy movie, but I like historical true stories. While watching it I read a lot of the Wikepedia entries for the real events and people. This one on Le Mans fatalities is fascinating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_24_Hours_of_Le_Mans_fatalities I've always been interested in super fast cars and driving fast, even though I can't do it anymore after my last speeding ticket:)

reply

I keep putting this movie off but after seeing your rating imma give it a go asap.

reply

I recently bought it for 12$. I’ll watch it soon.

reply

I haven't watched anything in particular, but I noticed that Tubi TV now has the first five seasons of Doc Martin, a favorite series of mine. It also has all five seasons of The Dick Van Dyke Show, which is my all-time favorite sitcom.

reply

i also noticed that tubi added the incredibly silly but (i think, anyway) very fun australian ww2 campy comedy 'danger 5' recently, so i'm planning on giving that a re-watch too. it's almost certainly not as great as the dvd show, but i think it's a goofy good time.

reply

I've noticed that Tubi is adding more and more all the time. But I've learned to check how many seasons of a show they have before I start watching. It's annoying to start something and then find out they have only one season when the show had several. But if I check before I start, at least I know what to expect and can gear myself up for it.

reply

team america 4/5 - would go even higher, cuz i think it's complete fun, but there's vomit scene that i remember not liking one little bit, so i've gotta dock it for that.

jo jo rabbit - 3.5 - mostly liked it, but most of the comedy - especially waititi's hitler - didn't make me laugh. hunt for the wilderpeople is a 5/5 for me.

my week:
un flic (1972) 3 ok french crime film. starts off in a very nicely pacey, tense way, but rather loses its form as it moves along. it's certainly full of characters looking pensive or determined or concerned at any given moment, but it doesn't really develop anyone into real, full formed people or develop into an interesting caper or police procedural.

brawl in cell block 99 (2017) 4.5 1hr 12m 20s - i've seen this four times, and i still yell out loud every time this scene comes along.

and 1hr 51m 30s.

holy f*cking shit.

i love this movie. would be a 5 if it was just a little bit shorter.

let this man make movies for the rest of his life.

paddington 2 (2017) 5 good thing about watching this at home is you can cry at the end without losing your dignity.

doesn't mean much if you post that publicly.

d-railed (2018) 3 d-railed seemed to be setting us up for a fun b-movie agathie christie-ish ride, but it takes a big turn into something very different. it's fine, but...i kinda wanted my murder mystery satire more than the movie i ended up getting, which was a bit horror movie generic overall, if admittedly fairly competent.

the eyes of my mother (2016) 4 impresses me and underwhelms me a bit every time i watch it.

good stuff: genuinely nightmarish images, atmosphere for days.
bad: very short on story. which is not a show-stopper - but it doesn't really give you anything in place of its absence, no peak inside the character imo.

but still, hats off to the director for making an ugly, unsettling film.

demon wind (1990) 3.5 i have no idea what this movie was about.

but it's a lot of fun. it could have been great if it just had a bit more visual spark - say if the director had about a tenth as much talent as raimi, this would have been a vhs classic.

instead it's just pretty good. but pretty good is pretty good.

gerald's game (2017) 3.5 let me be the million billionth person to say that the ending is bad.

but the rest of it is really good.

scream park (2012) 2.5 very standard b-horror. sexy teens are chased around an amusement park. ok, but no real energy or drive to make it noteworthy.

for some reason, skinny puppy's nivek ogre is in this thing. why?

the edge of seventeen (2016) 4 does an almost perfect job of walking a fairly tricky tightrope. it's clever without tipping into that 'nowhere in the world have there ever existed teenagers this effortlessly witty & clever' realm that annoys me a bit at times, and manages to be kinda sweet while avoiding mawkishness. i love this movie about teenage girls in a completely non-sinister, non-pervy way.

the incident (2014) 3.5 fairly trippy mexican indie. two groups get trapped in geographical loops, unable to escape out of a stairwell and road. has a definite feeling of a better than average twilight zone episode, and it also has strong echoes of philip k dick (whose 'time out of joint' shows up as the only book one group has to read for 35 years). not necessarily an improvement on its inspirations, but if you like those kinds of things you'll probably enjoy this.

knife+heart (2018) 3.5 can't quite say i loved it and fell for it the way i really wanted to. i certainly dug its look and its giallo fetish, and i didn't mind that it was a bit incoherent - wouldn't be a proper giallo homage if it made sense, would it?

but it lost its sleazy, ridiculous energy for me in the last 40 minutes or so. which in its way is also true to the giallo spirit, i guess. but i just didn't have fun with it the way i wanted to.

absolutely worth a look, by all means - it looks sharp, and the first hour is fun - but i was left wanting more.

spider-man 2 (2004) 5 been long enough for me to forget how great this is.

perfect blockbuster entertainment.

the house of the devil (2009) 4 if i could still have access to streaming services, i would go back in time to live in this movie.

cannibal holocaust (1980) 4.5 fantastically trashy, ugly piece of filth.

reply

also, i finally got around to watching 'haunting of hill house' on netflix, and i really liked it a lot. overall, i think this might be the best thing flanagan's made to date, and i like/love everything he's done, excluding before i wake, which is pretty mediocre in my books.

that said, there are some things that didn't work - the angry lesbian sister was a terribly tiresome character who grated on me every second she was on the screen. why would anyone let this cancerous, mean person in their life?

and it peaks with 5+6 as many have said, & never quite scales that height again. those episodes are little masterpieces in my book, especially 5.

and, also echoing others, the finale...well, i don't think it's bad. and i don't mind that it had a 'happy' ending. it doesn't even really bother me that it's a bit out of nowhere, slightly out of step with the rest of the show.

but the dialogue in that final episode felt like it came out of a daytime soap. a badly written one.

i wish that was different.

but overall, i thought this was absolutely chock-full of great moments, and in total was, dare i say, a bit of a triumph. 4.5/5

reply

I almost bought brawl in cell block 99 for 4$ once but had over 20 movies in my hands and had to let a few go. I regret it since...

Paddington 2: own it but I want to see the first one before.

Gerlad’s game: I did not mind the ending. 7.5/10

Spider-man 2: 7/10

I started the first episode of Haunting but never went back. I’ll watch it someday.

reply

if you have access to hoopla in your area, you can watch brawl... there. it's streaming for free along with zahler's other films bone tomahawk & dragged across concrete.

reply

Watching Vince Vaughn kick the shit out of a car makes all my fights look like a pillow fight at a little girls slumber party. The scene that you speak of gets me every time too.

reply

it's fantastically brutal!
