Is it okay for breakfast menus at restaurants to be categorized by course?


I want to start a restaurant, and want to know if you think it's appropriate to serve a breakfast menu with it's items categorized by course. Like, I want to serve a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu -- but when it comes to the breakfast menu, instead of serving a random array of items organized by other things versus courses -- I want to serve breakfast items organized by course like I plan to do with the dinner and lunch menu. Does that seem appropriate to you? Would you recommend that? Do you think that's stupid? What do you think? Why do you think that?

Just my thoughts, but to me breakfast is not the leisurely meal that dinner is - people tend to have things to do and want breakfast to be quick enough to be done and get on with their business.

I might start off with some fresh fruit and then move on to something else like pancakes, but many times it is OK with me to just have it served all at once. 45 minutes is just about my max for breakfast - even on vacation.

So now I have another question, I'm interested in choosing a name for my restaurant that will be easily remembered, simple, written easily, read easily, and spelled simply.

I want the name of the restaurant to be based on the main menu item that will be sold there -- which is going to be Meatloaf, and I want it to be named something with that name in the title. What do you think would be good names for the restaurant?

Some names I've thought of already are Meatloaf Haven, Meatloaf Mix, Meatloaf Mecca, Meatloaf Man, Meatloaf Loaf, Meatloaf Loaves, Meaty Meatloaf, Meatloaf House, Meatloaf Menu, Meatloaf Recipes, Meatloaf for sale, Meatloaf Manor, Meatloaf Dinner, and Meatloaf Diner

Do any of them sound adequate? Would you recommend any of them as a name? Should I use any of them?

A Course of breakfast? Regular people don't do that, we don't have time. Lunch either.

now is not the time. even restaurants with loyal patrons are doing bad. save your money or invest in something else.

I don't think you're going to be able to sell the concept of breakfast with courses. Maybe French Laundry could, but even then I have doubts!

Even the traditions of grand cuisine don't have courses at breakfast, the sort of people who used to serve ten-course dinners either had simple breakfasts of tea-and-toast or coffee-and-croissant, or they had plates of bacon and eggs or kippers or whatever. In fact, the traditional breakfast service for British aristocrats at their country houses was a sort of breakfast buffet where family and guests served themselves. And in the modern world, well, nobody wants to wait an extra half-hour for their waiter to bring the next course, they want to get on with their day.

It's still quite common to have a breakfast buffet here in Australia, a lot of hotel restaurants serve breakfast that way.

I tend to eat light in the morning, so the idea of a three course breakfast doesn't really appeal to me.

I've eaten at breakfast buffets on three continents now! Definitely the ideal way to serve breakfast.

An international buffet connoisseur, very nice! You're right it's a good way to serve breakfast, as long as they keep it at a reasonable temperature and rotate the selections - not a fan of cold toast or congealed eggs.

The best breakfast buffets have an egg and omelette chef standing there!

But I dont need eggs with every breakfast, I'm happy with good bread and cheese in So. America, or pancakes and fruit compote in Holland, or yogurt or congee or even kippers. Mmmm.

I now know how to say 'two fried eggs, sunny side up' in about a dozen different languages now. Trouble is, if the omelette station chief asks me an additional question in their language, I'm totally screwed, lol.

I think brunch is the breakfast with courses.

That being said, what would you consider a breakfast appetizer?

I'll extrapolate on the notion that people want a quick breakfast. Who the heck wants to be served pancakes, finish those, get served eggs, finish those, and then after that they get served bacon. It would be a nightmare of logistics for the cooks and waitstaff. At best, the model most likely to succeed would be similar to restaurants that feature a build-your-own breakfast menu. This might be the best place to feature your distinct breakfast dishes paired with the basics like bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, etc.

Maybe another way to look at it is: who ever ordered steak and eggs only to receive them both at the same time and say, "Oh, no, I didn't order them at the same time I wanted steak, then eggs sometime later."

Well, you won't get a lot of business from vegetarians with those names!

Seriously, I live in a college town. Every restaurant here has an extensive selection of vegetarian and vegan items, they have to.
