Films where Girl Power is done the right way

Which films you think have done the girl Power thing right, without shoving feminism down to our throats.?

I’d say

The Devil wears Prada
Legally Blond
Clueless
Wonder Woman
The Avengers films with Black Widow and Scarlet Witch.
Erin Brockovitch.

reply

Leon The Professional

reply

I really hate the 'the professional' part of that title , its tacked on , stupid pointless assassin trade pseudonym like "the mechanic".
I'm pretty sure the film was released as "Leon" originally.

reply

American Mary.

reply

I'll take off Erin Brockovitch because she manipulates men with her body.
That doesn't empower women, that reduces them to temptresses.

reply

No she wasn’t, okay she used her beauty a bit in her advantage but what made her win was her perseverance in the case and winning her clients trust.

She knew the people she was defending and fought hard to win. She was a true fighter

reply

She was using the weapons at her disposal. She manipulated them and then made sure they knew it. I think it's awesome.

reply

No, it reduces men to suckers. Nothing wrong with using what you have.

reply

Fargo.

reply

Yep that fits the brief. Good call!

reply

Yessir! Great one

reply

add the craft to the list

reply

See, I don’t know about this one. They were certainly girls WITH powers, but overall it’s not what I’d call a positive portrayal of women. All but one of the female characters are psycho bitches from Hell.

reply

Girl power also means a female’s character or morals? I thought girl power meant women doing guy things without guys being needed. Something like that.

reply

How the hell am I supposed to know what Girl Power is? Do I look like ginger f*****g spice to you?

I jest. I just thought it was a term of female solidarity and The Craft is more about girls being witches and bitches.

reply

This is hilarious.

reply

👍😂you boys are funny.

reply

Don’t really buy into the “right way” to do a feminist film – for me, it’s just about personal preference and what works for you. Sometimes in your-face-feminism works and sometimes subtle feminism works.

Here are some films that I think work:

Ever After
Girl, Interrupted
Ghost
Gothika
Power Rangers
Mean Girls
Mortal Kombat
Mulan
Pitch Perfect
Practical Magic
The Addams Family
The Help
Zootopia

And here are some others have listed, that I agree with:

A League of Their Own
Alien
Booksmart
Captain Marvel
Clueless
Spice World
The Craft
The Descent
Wonder Woman

I forgot about gurl interrupted. Good call.

reply

Right? It's so re-watchable.

reply

How about Gone With the Wind? Scarlett and Melanie have girl power in that.

reply

Tbh I haven't seen it. I definitely want to check it out.
