Nothing for 2020s?

reply

There hasn't been any truly great films yet this year, in my opinion. There were some good ones that I liked, but nothing really amazing.

reply

I liked Wings and Sunrise. It's fun watching flicks my grandma enjoyed as a young girl.

A few not-mentioned so far that I've really liked and/or been impressed by:

1920 Way Down East, Genuine
1921 The Kid
1922 Dr Mabuse - The Gambler
1923 La Roue [Abel Gance is the dude!]
1924 The Last Laugh, Entr'Acte
1925 Battleship Potemkin, Ben-Hur
1926 Faust, The Lodger, Ménilmontant
1927 Napoleon, It, Berlin-Symphony of A Great City
1928 Steamboat Bill Jr, Ports of New York, The Last Command, L'Étoile de Mer
1929 The Man with A Movie Camera, Pandora's Box, Blackmail, Un Chien Andalou

Nothing worth watching in the 2020s?

Gretel & Hansel

Very visual film.

With a deep, dark subtext.

@samoanjoe. I didn't realize that the original poster was serious about clumping together 2020 with 1920-29! Anyhow, normally I spend the first few months of every year catching up with all the best movies from the *previous* year (so Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Atlantics, The Lighthouse are 3 of the best new movies I've seen in 2020 & they're all from 2019). A new year doesn't normally start to form its own identity until at least April, by which point of course shutdowns blew up almost everything.

For me, then, 2020 hasn't really got going yet, feels stillborn, and I'd be stretching to recommend anything. The Vast of Night was sort of fun?

reply

A bit of downer, but Never Rarely Sometimes Always offers a glimpse of realism and credible performances from the two leads.

reply

I love a downer and just added it to my watchlist.

reply

Woman in the Moon (1929)
Spies (1928)

And already on my shortlist for top movies of the year (and with the way things are looking it'll probably be a pretty short list): The Vast of Night (2020).

reply

I swear with he way things are going this year, Sonic the Hedgehog is going to appear on top 5 year end lists.

reply

While it's far from a poor movie, there's enough titles already out and on the horizon that easily surpass it.

reply

Battleship Potemkin (1925)
