What did you guys watch this week? (24/05-30/05)

Ok, im here, with three films:

The lovebirds(2020 Netflix): A slightly above average action-romcom with an interesting ending twist. My rating: 6.5/10

The lighthouse (2019 DVD): Breakdown!
-Acting 8.5/10
-story 6/10
-cinematography 7/10
-horror 5/10
-comedy 7/10
Surprisingly, Pattinson was the highlight of this strange film.
Overall: 6/10

Two lovers and a bear (2016 TV): This is a fantastic Canadian movie set in the cold north starring Dane Dehaan and Tatiana Maslany who play the two lovers poetically, perfectly and emotionally. It Is my 2nd movie from this director and I’m really starting to love him. This one is about two burning souls who come together to make a leap for life and inner peace. My rating: 8/10

good day, sk.

i absolutely loved the lighthouse. it'' like what might happen if guy maddin tried to be a commercial sell-out. i'm due for a re-watch soon, maybe this week.

my week:

bone tomahawk (2016) 4.5 this would have won all the awards in the world if i was running the show.

only criticism: i do think the director should trim his running times down.

magic mike (2012) 4 a lesser boogie nights. but there's no shame in being a lesser boogie nights.

considering how many scenes there were of sweaty, muscled men grinding their stuff into the floor, i'm kinda shocked at how much fun i had with this.

have a good trip: adventures in psychedelics (2020) 2.5 extra half star for lots of yo la tengo on the soundtrack.

but otherwise a bit of a waste of time. there are lots and lots of interesting things to discuss in the topic of psychedelics, and there are good books to read. michael pollan's is a good one for eg. sam harris's waking up has some good sections that address such things as well.

but this is just a bunch of people telling their drug stories for the most part. some of them are kinda amusing (ben stiller in particular) but there's so much more that is there to be explored.

amusing at times, but a wasted opportunity.

harvest lake (2017) 3.5 i like this even more on my second watch. it's got a sexy cast and disgusting early cronenberg style effects & a silly, sleazy sex-parasite story. all good things.

tomboy (2011) 4 nicely low-key film about a boyish girl. does not bash its point over your head. simply tells a story that will make you think a little bit about what it would be like to walk in that person's shoes.

and it's short! something always to be applauded. stop people from making stupidly long movies.

orlando (1992) 3 despite its spacey, loopy premise, i was bored by this the way i tend to be bored by elaborate period costume dramas.

but it does have a nice, hypnotic score and some amusing moments, and for some reason i found its last 20 minutes or so highly entertaining. what was the difference? arsed if i know, but i was bored for an hour, and then i wasn't. weirdness.

final desination (2006) 3 the opening is absolutely great, genuinely tense. the rest of the movie is not up to that standard, but it's fun and perfectly watchable.

i had a memory that one of the fd films was really terrific, a model mainstream horror, and this was not that great. was it #2 that was a cut above the rest?

wendy and lucy (2006) 4.5 someone on the internet once described this movie as a snapshot of nothing, and i guess that's as good a description as any i could give.

nothing much happens. simple story about a person who doesn't have much and has nowhere to go. not overladen with details, and it's all the better for that.

i go back and forth on whether this is her greatest movie or meek's cutoff. i'm probably leaning towards this one right now cuz meek's is maybe a touch too action packed.

meek's cutoff (2010) 4.5 i wouldn't swear to this in court or anything, but i believe this might be the only film that's given me nightmares as an adult.

we are still here (2015) 2.5 pretty undistinguished b-level horror. it looks fine, the acting is all fine - barbara crampton is always good, larry fessenden is reliably fun - but the story is very paint by numbers and the gore and effects are pretty sparse and bland.

arrival (2016) 4 i'm re-reading ted chiang's short stories, which prompted me to give this another go.

i don't rate this perfectly because:

- it wimps out on the short story's staunch determinism.
- there is something that happens right at the end that i'm convinced makes absolutely no sense, and it bugs me every time i watch it.

but i still think it's great, and one of the best sci-fi films of the century. & i suspect, not that i'm nostrodamus or anything about such matters, that this movie will hold up very, very well over the coming years.

peppermint soda (1976) 2.5 i can like sissy movies about teen girls discovering their feelings & so on - 8th grade is a perfect film in my books, & i sure loved tomboy earlier this week, so i'm clearly not completely dead inside - but i really did not care about these particular girls and their feelings.

lots of people seem to love this, but i didn't find any wit or charm or anything to latch onto. it felt a bit like a 100 minute tampon commercial to be honest.

lock stock and two smoking barrels (1998) 2.5 really enjoyed snatch, completely dug the gentlemen, so i figured this would be a natural triple. but i didn't like it even one little bit. found the look dreary and the whole thing was lacking in energy. also couldn't understand a thing anyone said.

island zero (2018) 3 cons: light on violence & gore & tension & any of the things that you would generally expect, & tv movie level effects.

pros: surprisingly involving story, reasonably well drawn characters, tolerable acting and a cool island setting.

also, i finally got around to watching the final season of bojack horseman & thought it was great. 4.5/5.

i'm preparing to ditch netflix at the end of june, so i'm going to watch a few series i've been meaning to get to. i started the haunting of hill house (two episodes in, terrific so far...), & i might try binging better call saul finally.

Magic mike: 5.5/10
Final Destination: 7/10
Arrival: 8/10

Hi there!
Once again the ones you watched are unknown to me. I mean, I've heard about The Lighthouse, but it's not on my list (yet).

I watched:
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019): Finally! I consider myself a SW fan, but yeah, this trilogy is probably the weakest. I managed to lower my expectations enough so that I can enjoy this movie, but it left no mark on me. 6/10

Baby Driver (2017): One of the best action movies I've seen recently. Great mix between romance, comedy and violence! The ending wasn't perfect imo, but I'd still rate it 8,5/10.

Exatlon Hungary is finally over, so hopefully I'll be able to watch more movies. I finished In Treatment S01 (7,5/10), and started S02 but I got stuck in the middle of it.. It's definitely not as good as the first.

reply

Yeah Baby Driver was surprisingly well made, considering the box office results. It was one of the best action movies in 2017. I watched it in the theater all by myself. Alone. No one else was there. I bet I looked stupid at the time lol.

I agree the ending wasn't perfect, but I think the whole movie was just a little bit too bland. Like it's almost have nothing new to offer. The driving was great, gunfights were great, but they're just some "normal" scenes in an action movies. Nothing's breathtaking, nothing's super memorable. Unlike, say, Deadpool or Kingsman.

Also, the whole Kevin Spacey debacle was unfortunate... but, even without all the controversies his character was simply too weak, Spacey was basically playing himself. He's too, for lack of better word, bland. Just like what I said about the rest of the movie. It just didn't work as well as Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming, for example.

reply

You're right, it had nothing new to offer, apart from really good execution.
It had no big plot twists, but I was still on the edge of my seat wondering about each character's fate.

reply

baby Driver: fun action that's worth a second or third viewing. 7.5/10

reply

The Desert Rats (1953) - The British know how to make war movies. This is short and sweet with Richard Burton leading the way. Mason plays Rommel in a small part. 7/10

The Sting (1973) - This is rated higher than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but it is not as good. The movie is entertaining and quaint. The Exorcist should have won Best Picture. 7.5/10

The Outfit (1973) - Similar plot to Charlie Varrick but not as good. There were a whole bunch of decent crime dramas that came out of the early 1970s. This is one of them. 7/10

Sometimes a Great Notion (1971) - A solid drama with a great cast. The movie has sort of been forgotten. 7/10

Apollo 13 (1995) - Never seen it before - it is one of those Hanks movie which is designed for Oscar glory. I thought for sure that Spielberg had directed it. No acting Oscars was warranted in this movie. 7/10

One TV series

Dublin Murders - I should have listened to the boards and stayed away but I am a sucker for crime dramas. This is very slow and there are too many red herrings and the lead detectives are more screwed up than the killer and there may be a supernatural element to it all. 6/10

reply

Apollo 13; 8/10 but due for rewatch

The Interview

A solid contender for worst movie ever made.

reply

If you think that’s the worst movie ever made then you haven’t watched that many movies.

reply

I've made 1,300 ratings on IMDb, so I'm pretty sure I have.

reply

That’s all?

reply

I really liked Professor Marston too.

reply

Then we should watch it together some time. I’ll make gourmet snacks. 😁

Ok! I love 'gourmet snacks'.

I wanted to reply back to you when it was after 10 your time, but I can’t stay away. 🥰

American ultra: 5/10
A Good Old Fashioned Orgy: 6/10

My ratings were out of 5 thumbs so we are pretty much on the same page.

I’ve been stuck in John Travolta land with:

Saturday Night Fever
Staying Alive
Moment by Moment
Urban Cowboy

Also, Flashdance, Dirty Dancing, Dance Flick. I’m a dancer and love dance movies.

reply

I’m a big fan of Urban Cowboy! Absolutely great soundtrack too!

reply

Can't rate any of those but I do like me some travolta here an there.

reply

I’ve never heard of your weeks movies but The Lighthouse does sound interesting. I’ll look it up.

Mine this week:

Summer Camp Nightmare (1987)
This one’s an obscure “Lord of the Flies” at summer camp tale based off the book The Butterfly Revolution. Chuck Connors stars as the camp director with an otherwise unknown cast. I really enjoyed this one and can’t believe it’s not more well known.

Aenigma (1987)
Boring Fulci Horror that borrows a great deal from Phenomena with an odd soundtrack.

Platoon (1986)
I never get tired of this one. It’s hard to believe Tom Berenger didn’t become a bigger hit after his performance.

Almost Human (1974)
Tomas Milian plays a maniac being chased by a tough cop in this cool Italian crime film. Great Morricone score and Lenzi directing make this one a fun ride.

reply

Hi!

Platoon: 9/10

reply

Star Trek: TOS
Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern
Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Jeopardy!
Wheel of Fortune
How It's Made
Shaun the Sheep

reply

LAst week someone told me shaun the sheep was her favorite movie ever. I was like, oookay... I guess I'll have to see it for myself...

reply

There are 2 Shaun the Sheep movies, and a tv series with a spin-off for Timmy, the only lamb in the flock. So I think she's gonna have to be a little more specific on that one.
