Lemmings - a sad story

Something interesting and disturbing I learned today, the 1958 Oscar-winning Disney documentary White Wilderness included a scene where lemmings throw themselves off a cliff which largely popularized the view of suicidal lemmings who jump off cliffs in groups. The reality is that lemmings don't normally display this behavior, they may jump into the water but it's usually only to swim to a different habitat.

Anyway the awful part of it is that, in an attempt to amp up the drama for the documentary, the filmmakers got a truck full of lemmings which the crew dumped off the cliff to simulate a mass suicide. The lemmings weren't even a real group, having been sourced from different parts of the world.

Some may say "well they're just rodents" but it astounds me that a supposedly wholesome corporation like Disney would stoop to this sort of animal cruelty.

Things were done differently in the 1950s. For example Jacques Cousteau drove his ship, the famous Calypso, over a whale killing it (OOPS!) and his crew bullied turtles on an island. They saw nothing wrong with that and put it in a documentary. Good old times!

Sure, but it’s still amazing to me that an Oscar winning doco from the happiest place on earth would have such a brutal backstory.

You’ll never catch Sir David Attenborough dumping a load of lemmings from the back of his 4 wheel drive for a money shot, I’ll tell you that much for free.

You monster!

That clip brought back memories though

There is actually a board game called Leaping Lemmings that simulates this. Players try to get as many of their lemmings from one end of the board to the other, where they leap off. It is played at several board game conventions. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/29687/leaping-lemmings

As someone else here said, times were different then. I suspect a lot of animals were tortured or mistreated for films and TV shows and not only by Disney. That doesn't excuse Disney, of course, because animal films, or films featuring animals have been big for them. I remember watching the Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson (1960) and was disturbed by the scenes of people riding ostriches as though they were horses. I was a kid at the time I first saw it and thought it was mean.

I think what amazes me most is that this was a nature documentary. You could expect animal welfare concerns to be fairly non-existent back then with filmmakers, but to deceive the public like that with what is sold as a doco is both unethical and extremely surprising, to me anyway. Especially when they basically created a lie which is now generally regarded as a truth. Makes me wonder how many other misconceptions have been born from what we should expect to be a truthful medium.

You're right. It's appalling when filmmakers fiddle with reality to make it fit the story or picture in their minds. Real life and nature is fascinating enough and there's simply no need to manipulate the narrative.

GE, have you ever seen Earth Odyssey? If not, I highly recommend it. The magnificent nature photography rivals that of National Geographic.

reply

I've never heard of it and can't seem to find it. Can you share anymore information about it? Is it a movie? A TV series? New or recent? Older?

reply

For me, it comes on Saturday mornings shortly after Jack Hanna's Wild Kingdom. It's become a very relaxing, Zen-like experience and a great way to start the day.

Okay, thanks. I'll have to see if I can find a way to stream it since I don't have cable or over-the-air TV.

Good luck! I feel certain you'll enjoy it.
