Best film to not win the Best Picture Oscar

I know that a lot of people can't understand how Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare In Love, or how Annie Hall beat Star Wars, but for me, the best film that did not win Best Picture was To Kill a Mockingbird. It got beat by Lawrence of Arabia.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a masterpiece -- a film I have watched countless times.
On the other hand, I have never been able to watch Lawrence of Arabia in its entirety.

What film do you consider to be the best, yet did not win the Oscar for Best Picture?,

"Eternal Sunshine" wasn't even nominated but I thought it should have won. If I had to pick one that was nominated, either "Fargo" or "A Clockwork Orange."

reply

Great movie, I’d through man on the moon in there as well.

reply

Absolutely robbed of several nominations.

reply

Everyone in that movie was fantastic. I don’t know what it is with the academy hating jim. I also thought Willis was robbed for sixth sense

2001 and Psycho would be my picks. Neither was nominated for best picture.

Nailed it.

i'm at a loss to think of a time when the film i personally liked the most won a best picture oscar. i'm pretty sure it's never happened.

those awards shouldn't be taken too seriously or as the final authority on any film's worth, imo.

they're awarded to the films that do the best job of achieving some base level of commercial success & that manage to appeal to the kinds of people who make up the groups that vote for those awards.

they're fun to talk about and it's fun to guess who'll win in a horse-racing sense, but i don't think they're the final authority on any film's value, and for myself a film getting nominated for an award like that usually means it's the kind of film i probably won't like much.

Exactly! I'm always wary of Oscar nominated films. My philosophy is "the more people say a movie is great, the less likely it is to be good".

The Searchers
The Exorcist
Citizen Kane
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Fargo

The Ten Commandments instead of Around the World in 80 Days
Spartacus instead of The Apartment
2001: A Space Odyssey instead of Oliver! (Even Planet of the Apes would have been a better choice)

Overall: 2001: A Space Odyssey

Wrongfully Accused

Almost Famous.

Great pick

That is one of my favorite movies! I love it so much!

I don´t know about the best but I think The Ox-Bow Incident should have beaten Casablanca. It´s a much more powerful film. To be fair, you could make a bunch of arguments for an all-time great film that should have won in its year that wasn´t even nominated and there is quite a few of them.
