Would you go to the dentist 🦷 these days?

I have a dentist appointment for a regular checkup in a week and a half. I'm not really comfortable with this level of "personal" interaction right now, so I plan to cancel.

What would you do?

reply

I have an appointment tomorrow for a routine cleaning. I made the appointment months ago. I decided to go. Last week they "pre-screened" me by asking me health questions over the phone. Plus they sent all patients an e-mail about how they are adjusting their procedures for increased safety, such as taking patient's temperatures all the way down to no magazines in the waiting area. So I feel like it will be OK

reply

Who reads the magazines in the dentist office? Don't people have phones?

reply

My dentist had crappy magazines anyway.

reply

My dentist is so on-schedule that I never get a chance to check out his magazines. I get there generally about ten minutes before my appointment time, and by the time I've reviewed my patient information (they always have patients review their info sheets to make sure nothing has changed) they're calling me back to the exam room.

reply

I guess I'll know more when I call to cancel. Mrs Neighbor saw her dentist today because she had a temporary something-or-other that had to be replaced with a permanent one. She described their safety procedures, but I didn't find it particularly comforting. All I can think of is how it's very close contact during dental work.

reply

Definitely not, but then I have my reasons...

reply

I'm considered vulnerable because of my age. Hence, my wariness to go.

reply

It's entirely up to you. Other than your age, do you have any health issues where you'd be more vulnerable to the virus?

I have the opposite problem--I can't wait to get in to the dentist! (I never thought I'd say that!)
I needed to go early in the year but I was having some other issues that prevented it from happening and it continued for months. It finally got resolved but by then everything was going on lockdown.
I'm very good about going regularly for cleanings and take good of my teeth and gums in between visits. Mouth health is important to the rest of your body too so it never made sense to me that it wasn't considered "essential!" Yet liquor stores are! 😏
I can understand shutting it down for general cleanings for a month but this is too much.
It's the first thing on my "to do" list once they open. Only problem is, everyone else will be trying to get in too so I imagine there will be another wait. Ugh.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best and will say a little prayer that you're protected and won't get sick!

reply

As far as I know, I don't have any other health issues that would make me vulnerable. But I live in a county that has had big increases in virus cases in the past week or so. Heck, we're making the news with our numbers, so that gives me pause.

I take care of my dental health and visit my dentist twice a year as I know dental health is just as important as my overall health.

I'll see what the dentist says when I call. I don't really want to skip it, but may try and reschedule for July perhaps... I do think about your point concerning the backlog of folks wanting to be seen, though.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

reply

It might be best for you to wait a bit then.

Yep, your dentist should know better than any of us here 😜 and 2 more months shouldn't make much difference especially since you're not having problems.

If it was my mom, I'd ask her to wait unless she was having a problem that could cause her an even bigger problem later.

reply

If it was a regular doctor, I say go. but for a dentist, I wouldn't feel comfortable having my mouth exposed. I would cancel.

reply

I did a video appointment with my doctor about three weeks ago. My seasonal allergies were awful this spring and I couldn't take it anymore. I'll never forget how the video call started: she said, "How are you doing? Oh, you look terrible!" At least I know she understood how miserable I was.

reply

LOL, OMG, what a thing to hear from a doctor! At least you knew what she meant.

reply

It made me laugh too. I was happy she could actually see what was going on. I looked like I'd been in a fistfight - eyes and eyelids red and swollen, including swelling below the eyes so bad I couldn't wear my glasses (only needed for reading, thankfully). The skin under my eyes became so raw and dry from all the tearing - it was painful. Spent a lot of time with cold compresses on my eyes. That was the only relief I had at that point.

reply

Our dentist is my husband's nephew. He suggested we hold off for a while for routine work, but my husband has a broken tooth, so he will have to go in and have that repaired sooner than later.

reply

This is where I am right now. Routine stuff can wait, but urgent things should get addressed.

reply

I haven'r been to a dentist in over a year. I just make sure I floss and brush my teeth after eating anything. So far, so good!

reply

I'd cancel. Too soon. Why take the chance if you don't have to? If it were a dental emergency, that would be different, but this is just a checkup. A month or two isn't going to make any difference with your teeth.

reply

That's the way I'm leaning. I just don't think it's worth the risk. I'm not having any problems so I think it's better to hold off for a while.

reply

Have you spoken to the office yet? I'm wondering if you can reschedule for a couple of months out, so you've got another appointment.

reply

I talked to them a short time ago and have rescheduled for late July. I hope by then we'll have a better handle on the virus and how re-opening procedures here are working (or not).

reply

Yes of course I would, and I will. I have an appointment in June which I will keep. And my dentist has emailed a list of prudent precautions to me. You can't hide in your house forever. So you're just gonna let your teeth rot??

I also have an appointment for a haircut on May 30 which I will also keep.

😎

reply

only open for emergencies here. i will not be in the rush to go. hygienists get up and close.
