the Food and Drink board but not many people go there. Anyhow with grilling season almost in full swing what do you like better. A charcoal or a gas grill. Please say why.

Can I say both? I have both. I mean they both have advantages and disadvantage. Gas is great for convenience and everyday dinners as it takes no time to heat up and it's easy to control the temperature. When it comes to flavour, I prefer charcoal, but we tend to only use it on weekends as it requires more time commitment and work to get the heat correct. But yeah, taste wise charcoal.

reply

sslssg Exactly how I feel. I use the gas grill more often just because of the convenience. But sometimes I will use charcoal to make hamburgers, steaks or chicken just for the better taste. Sometimes the extra effort is worth it.

Any other opinions on Gas vs Charcoal?

reply

Charcoal all the way. I don't grill when it's a gas grill. Why bother? I would rather eat fried chicken and be done.

I don't always bbq, but when I do it's charcoal.

reply

But don't you agree with me and sslssg about the convenience of a gas grill? That's why I use both. Gas for convenience and charcoal for taste.

reply

Oh, I agree. A gas grill is more convenient of course. But then again, fried chicken is even more convenient. So it depends on why we bbq in the first place. Only for convenience or for, well, good food.

reply

"Only for convenience or for, well, good food."

I got to disagree with you on that. You can make great foods on a gas grill. For example I will never make a steak in a skillet. So much better on a gas grill. Chicken on a gas grill can be great. Probably the tenderest chicken I ever had I made on a gas grill. Its called beer can chicken. Get one of these:

And do this:

Fall off the bone tender!

I don't really consider friend chicken convenient. At least using a gas grill there are fewer dishes to wash.

reply

I've never owned a gas grill. I have no experience with propane and figured if I ever tried it, I'd blow up the neighborhood. Or at least my part of it.

reply

While a gas grill is definitely more convenient, I prefer charcoal.

Granted, it takes longer, but I don't really mind that. I usually grill a steak, and along with that I'll cook a baked potato in the oven for an hour. No microwaved baked potatoes for me!

So I basically start baking the potato, then a few minutes later light the charcoals, and then make and eat a salad while I wait for the charcoals to be ready.

reply

You don't do the potato on the grill? Wrapped on foil? So good.

reply

Charcoal. Specifically, lump mesquite. I use it for low and slow smoking and high heat grilling. Great smokey flavor. Also NO lighter fluid. Chimney starter, all the way

reply

I prefer a hardwood fire. Charcoal takes second place. Gas grills don't give the taste I want, but they're really convenient.

reply

I'd only used a charcoal grill until my last place, where they had a propane. Charcoal tastes better to me but the gas grill tasted very good too, and as others have said, it is easier and more convenient.

Propane/gas is probably better for you, but it also means detaching the propane tank, finding somewhere to get it filled, and hooking it back up again.

reply

"Propane also means detaching the propane tank, finding somewhere to get it filled, and hooking it back up again."

Its really not hard to do. I always have a second one filled and ready to go. That way if the one I'm using runs out in the middle of cooking I just unscrew the old one and screw in the new one. Then just continue cooking. Plus where I live they have propane exchanges. Take in the empty one and they give you a full one.

It's hard to do if your dominant shoulder was fractured and still isn't the same as it used to be. Those suckers are heavy!
