there's a mouse somewhere in my apartment

i just saw it scurrying into my kitchen in the middle of watching spiderman (2002 version, which i was enjoying very much until that mouse freaked me the hell out).

i've pulled apart every nook and cranny of my place trying to find it, and i can't see where the little rodent is hiding.

fat chance i'll get any sleep tonight.

send help!

put some food out

reply

i put some seeds out, and i'm sitting here with a broom waiting to pounce on this little fucker.

i'm generally not in favor of hurting innocent animals, but at this point it's him or me. he's going down.

if i don't take him out tonight, i'll pick up some traps tomorrow if my caretaker doesn't have any spares they can lend me.

You must have exposed food somewhere. Find it and close it up and they won't bother with your place next time. Look for a box or bag with a hole in it.

reply

i did have some potatoes out, but i checked the bag and didn't see any signs of nibbling/gnawing.

everything is now locked away in cupboards.

i am going into lockdown until this invader is terminated.

I had a mouse a couple of months ago. They really love peanut butter. I smeared it on the mouse trap. Try that. Hopefully, there isn't a 2nd mouse and they start having babies.

reply

there's rarely just one

reply

Thankfully, the one I killed was the only one. But 15 years ago, I had mice and killed over 40 of them. It was nasty.

reply

that sounds like my mother's house. she always has bird seed around so it's like a magnet for them

^This^

If they're wooden, I'd clean out the cupboards tomorrow. You might find sawdust if they've gnawed in from behind.

reply

You should also be aware of its disgusting little black droppings, which will give you an idea of its movements and a path along which to set traps. Also, more than likely, it's hiding somewhere within the walls so you should be looking for the slightest opening that could be its doorway.

reply

Not your fault. Mice can squeeze through the most minuscule of cracks. We all deal with them sooner or later. If you have to buy some traps, go with the traditional snap ones and avoid the glue.

reply

Any hole big enough to fit their heads thru.

reply

i can't find any of the tell-tale signs of a mouse being here - no droppings, no gnawed cords.

i left some pumpkin seeds & peanut butter out & put some flour down on some of the areas where it would plausibly move about, and there was no activity last night.

but i'll pick up some traps today.

hopefully this isn't the start of a real problem.

reply

Get a cat.

reply

Does anyone know if it's true that mice can climb on you when you sleep? Or are they generally scared/shy of humans and leave them alone?

reply

they just want to eat

reply

So they can bite on humans then especially if they're desperate?

reply

only if you smell like the food they're after

reply

not likely. they're very timid for the most part. they see someone, they're gonna scurry away.

they do gnaw on things to get material to build nests, and it's possible they may gnaw on you while you're sleeping, i suppose. i don't know how likely that is. more likely they'll get into your garbage or get into food you may have out.

reply

Consider that you are hundreds, thousands of times his size.

reply

You mean computer mouse right?

reply

Buy cats and snakes. Set
Then free in your home. No more mice.

reply

sounds like the start to the woman who swallowed a fly.

reply

People I know place cat hair around their homes and swear it helps. You can get it from a cat owner after they brushed their cat.
