Uh oh, someone in this household is sick

Last night I heard one of the 4 people living here (in addition to me) coughing and sneezing away for hours.

The couple I've been renting from have gone to stay up at their farm a ways from here, which is good. The person here who's sick is the most responsible of everyone and is most likely to take precautions to not spread it. Plus the only reason she'd have to come into my part of the household is to do laundry, which I doubt she'll much be feeling like doing for a bit.

Obviously I have no way of knowing if what she's come down with is the coronavirus or a plain old-fashioned cold, or seasonal flu, but I can't say I didn't wish this hadn't happened at all (she's nice) or if it had to, it happened after I've moved out.

reply

Ask her to do a test.

reply

Depending on age and where she lives, it's not that easy to get a test. My son's girlfriend, who is in her early 30's thinks she had it a couple of weeks ago. She has recovered from whatever she had, but her doctor would not test her because of her age.

Regardless, I wish both her and you all the best.

reply

They're giving very few tests here, even when someone's displaying symptoms. It's not my call, and not even hers.

reply

Have to play the avoidance game then.

reply

For certain. Not difficult to do, except for her coming into the laundry area to do laundry, which also happens to be where I prepare and cook all food. And my dog, who has free range and she might pet him. If I knew these two things weren't issues, I'd be able to relax.

reply

Well, you can at least tell her to not touch the dog i guess, she should understand.

reply

Hopefully just allergies?

reply

I wish, for her sake and any/everyone else she is or has been around, but no.

reply

Dammit, I posted to you, lost my connection, and now the post is gone.

Anyway, turns out you were right! Just spoke with her and she told me she'd been up where it was very windy, which it hasn't been here, and that's what's caused it.

Whew! Relieved and happy she's okay (minus the allergy flare-up) for everyone's sake 🎉

reply

Oh that’s good cat! That covid shit is scary! I had read that sneezing wasn’t necessarily a symptom and it is allergy season, but this thing is so new, who knows? I’m very relieved for you👍😀

reply

This is no good, Cat...

reply

At least of all the people here, she's the most careful and considerate about things such as this. I'll probably be fine, but was hoping to make my great escape before anyone came down with anything.

reply

I hope she doesn't have coronavirus, but how did she get sick at all with social distancing and masks?

reply

Good question. I think she's someone who'd be better than most about washing hands and sanitising regularly. Did you see MrMojo's thread last night about whether or not maintaining 6' of physical distance is enough? I agree that it's not, although usually that's enough.

reply

I didn't see the thread.

A guy today was at least 60 ft away, but I could smell his cigarette smoke and wondered what else was drifting my way so I moved. : )

There are a few things I take into account like if the other person is wearing a mask, talking or yelling and if outside, wind direction.

Your roommate would hate me. I'd wear a mask around her and find a different place or time to prepare food.

Here's the thread. https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/5e8d23054417f60917004174/Is-6-Enough

Watch the video. He's right.

Yes, it does make a difference if the other person is wearing a mask, just talking, talking forcefully, coughing, sneezing, anything that would make the respiration and droplets come out more forcefully and travel further.

Luckily I have my own separate suite of tiny bedroom, tiny living room, and bathroom. The problem is my "kitchenette," which is in the laundry room, which everyone uses. That shared area is why I started looking again for another place, and will be moving out Sunday.

The other good news is I chatted with her and it is allergies, not coronavirus, or even a regular flu or a cold :)

reply

Good channel. I just subscribed.

I'm not too surprised. I usually get sick from someone coughing near me.

I've read studies in which both N95 and surgical masks wearers are almost equally protected from getting sick by those who are carrying a virus. Contradicts what we've been told.

That's good news!

reply

Oh bloody hell! Can you not bring your move forward?

reply

Turns out it was allergies! Hooray!

AND, my move is brought forward to Sunday. Wish it weren't, TBH. I thought I had until the 15th and just found out today I have 3 fewer days to plan, prepare, and pack than I thought I did.

On the plus side, I'll be in my new place very soon!

reply

Nothing focuses the mind more than a deadline being brought forward. This is excellent news! I'll raise a glass to you on Sunday evening (here). Take care.

reply

For what it's worth I don't think lots of coughing is particularly associated with Covid-19, or sneezing either for that matter. Covid-19 typical symptoms are fever, dry cough and tiredness. Sounds more like she might have a bad cold with a sore throat. Here's hoping anyway.

reply

Thank you. The coughing is definitely one of the most common symptoms. It is a dry cough, but it's a bad one. Anyway, I spoke with her and it turned out it was allergies 👍

reply

Pollen is bad here in Texas. I cough not a lot but I know from the years it is allergy.
