What are your top five scariest movies that you have ever watched?

Mine are (in no particular order):

The Exorcist
The Shining
Amityville Horror II the Possession
Village of the Damned
The Poltergeist (the original one from 1980).

reply

Agreed on Amityville II, There's just something about that even to this day that gives me the shits. Everything about it is just doom and gloom. Still a great film though.

Threads (1984) Certainly of its time and of its place, Growing up near many primary targets hear in the U.K no film has come close to the terrors this has given me over the years.

reply

Yes, Amityville II terrifies me!!!

reply

I watched Threads last year, it is terrifying 😳.

reply

I’ve never seen threads.

reply

It's about a nuclear bomb going off. A bit like where the wind blows.

reply

I might have to check that one out

reply

Google it then look for the internet archive site. It's free on there. Odd that it's not on youtube 🤷‍♀️

reply

I just found it there. Thank you. 👍

reply

Yeah Amityville II is pure evil. One of few movies I can think of that palpably emanates what feel like genuine pure evil energy.

reply

I still have night terrors about Threads!

reply

Yup, Exorcist, Shining...

The Ring
The Blair Witch Project - the hype around it was disturbing when it came out.

Hands down the scariest thing I ever watched, that haunted me for years, was an episode of Night Gallery called “The Doll”.

reply

What was The Doll about?

Saw the Exorcist many years after it'd been released so I was past the hype and it didn't scare me. Similar with The Shining, which I've still never seen all the way through because I get bored.

Haven't see The Ring, but have to admit The Blair Witch Project was effectively scary. The original The Haunting scared the pants off of me and The Silence of the Lambs, YIKES.

reply

(rec)
alien
the exorcist
eyes of my mother
zodiac

reply

The Shining 1980
The Exorcist 1973
The Descent 2005
Audition 1999
Silence of the Lambs 1991
Session 9 2001
Sinister 2012

reply

i can go along with most of that list. i didn't find it follows scary, though. it's tense, well made, but it never quite edged over into disturbing/scary territory for me. i've been thinking of giving it a re-watch. maybe tonight.

the old film scenes in sinister were genuinely disturbing, i thought.

reply

Descent was so claustrophobic for me. I went through a cave experience in New Mexico once and I was pretty scared, and not funny scared, really scared. Something about It Follows really bugged me. I've been hesitant to watch it again, it was unnerving.

reply

Session 9 is fantastic. Gets better with more viewings. Difficult to find though.

reply

Alien
The Exorcist
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Thing (1982)
Jaws

I'm probably partial to movies from the 70s and 80s, but I was a kid then. Those movies that scare you as a kid really have a way of staying with you.

reply

The horror movies from the 70s and 80s were the best; they can't be beat!!!

reply

True. It was a great time to grow up as a horror fan. And other ways, as well.

reply

The horror movies nowadays just don't measure up. The closest ones are the Conjuring franchise....

reply

Yeah, Blumhouse is probably the best thing going in horror right now. They've consistently made good movies, but not sure any that I'd call great. Nothing on the level of The Thing or Alien.

reply

Texas Chainsaw was a big one for me. Didn't sleep for a week.

reply

Yes indeed! It’s what you don’t see in Texas Chainsaw Massacre that’s so scary.

reply

Texas Chainsaw Massacre terrified me!

reply

I just watched the youtube video. I never heard of the movie Salem's Lot by now, I want to watch it!!!

reply

It's based on a novel by Stephen King.

reply

I can't say that a movie has ever scared me, but movies have creeped me out.

The Exorcist
Blair With Project (not because of the witch, it was the unknown that make it creepy. I find it just as creepy thinking that it was just people messing with them)
Funny Games
The Descent
The Vanishing (original)
Creep

reply

The Exorcist
The Omen
Damien: Omen 2
The Thing
The Witches (As a child, this scared the hell out of me).

reply

The Witches. It didn't scare me, but one of my favorites.

reply

Erica in the painting freaked me out. The transformation scene. I was traumatized as a 10 yo. lol

reply

The Witches. I never seen that. I’ll
Have to check it out for sure!
