Not sure if this should go on the Politics forum or here it really isn't "political" its more of a history question

Out of all the u.s. presidents who do you think had the hardest job like which president took office at the "unluckiest" time period

reply

Lyndon Baines Johnson. He took office in horrible circumstances and was faced with a country in social upheaval and was saddled with an unpopular war. No matter what he did he was going to be hated by one group or another.

reply

good point

reply

I greatly admire his stance on immigration, voter's rights, education funding, the Civil Rights acts of the late 50s-60.
Johnson was on point domestically for sure
He was a fairly progressive guy and I admire that, even if I lean more conservative personally
The man loved his country and could command the room, he was also a lovable Hillbilly, I quite like a fellow like him automatically

His Vietnam policy was a disaster though...We should have never gotten our young men involved in a foreign civil war...My Father in Law got sent there, he came home alive thank God, with a bunch of medals and lots of nightmares

I do admire Johnson, he got the job done under the most terrible of circumstances, you could even say he was just carrying on the Anti-Communist policy that Kennedy had carried on from previous administrations....I don't blame them, communism is an absurd dream, unfitting for reality

I'd agree with your choice of Johnson, he did have a tough situation to deal with

reply

The Vietnam War was for most purposes started by LBJ. There was no social upheaval when he took over on Nov 22/1963.

reply

When you control the narrative, you can create a problem... and then declare yourself a victim.

reply

Without a doubt, it was Abraham Lincoln.

reply

Was Abraham Lincoln a failure as President for not preventing the Civil War ?

reply

South Carolina seceded from the Union in December of 1860 - 3 months before Lincoln became President. By then what could he have done - just let the south leave the Union?

reply

Sorry to butt in, just my two cents...

As I understand it most of the Southern States seceded immediately following Lincoln's election...Lincoln, and I assume the rest of the American people, would have preferred to avoid a sickening catastrophe that killed 600,000 people but the economy of The Southern States relied very heavily on Plantations and slavery

The die was cast, the Glorious South quit the Union, The Industrious North said 'No you don't' and a generation lost their fathers and brothers in the ensuing carnage

Honest Abe just happened to be there and he happened to be on the right side of things, all things considered

reply

The Civil War was about money. Aren't they all? The South had it, the North wanted it.

reply

No, Lincoln was most definitely not a failure.

reply

Absolutely not!
The guy seemed to have aged 30 years during that war, google Lincoln Before And After...that is clearly a guy that stayed up late listening to frontline reports and studying maps

He looks utterly drained and on death's door God bless him

reply

It's unfortunate and one of the ironies of history that that Confederacy hated Lincoln and yet his vision for them to be reunited with the North was one of forgiveness and tolerance. All of that died when he was assassinated and the heavy hand of reconstruction fell on the South. I think it's possible that the Klan would never have become what it did had Lincoln lived.

reply

James Buchanan Is widely regarded by most historians as one of the worst US president for that very reason.

reply

It's got to be Abe.

reply

FDR or Lincoln I would say
Both faced a national crisis that would have beaten lesser fellows, the country was in grave danger and both of them managed to prevail...both ended up dying tragically but they were heroic leaders for sure

I might add Washington as well because the 'Law Of The Land' had not been sussed out and he was the first guy to jump into the deep end of the pool

Teddy Roosevelt certainly deserves a mention, America was growing at an enormous pace and he kept the neighbors in check and ran a proper operation...these dummies today could never dig the Panama Canal AND tell Europe to back off

reply

i think there are a lot of people who can go on the list but Lincoln and FDR are the two that are a "must"

if that makes sense

reply

Manes sense to me

America was very lucky to have them

reply

Lincoln

reply

FDR

reply

Obama.

reply

Lincoln
FDR
Truman

I’m curious: If you are not sure, why not put the topic in the most cautious place, which would be Politics?

It couldn’t be that you wanted the larger audience, could it; or that you wanted quietly to try to erode the ban on public political bullshit in the General Discussion area of an ENTERTAINMENT forum? Mercy, no. ‘Course not.

T’answer your allegedly serious question, I agree with the answer of Lincoln, but LBJ had one hell of a hard row to hoe by inheriting a head-blown-off president and the Vietnam War.

reply

yes you caught me im on a secret mission to erode the ban on political bullshit in the General Discussion area of an ENTERTAINMENT forum and I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids

reply

And that dog. 😀

I nominate your post for the "Best Response to Being Kaned" award.
