1980s nostalgia in movies is OVER, it's time for 1990s nostalgia now

Back in the Noughties, there were movies specialising in 1970s nostalgia like Super 8, and maybe a few others I'm not aware of. Then, in the last decade from 2010 to 2019, it was 1980s nostalgia like the IT movie duology and Stranger Things, and lots of other things, but now that its the Twenties, or the 2020s, it will now be 1990s nostalgia that takes centre stage. Who else thinks so?

A few more years...I believe media business has something to do with this.

'Happy Days' killed two birds with one stone, hooking TWO generations on that show. Teens watch the program in the 1970s because it was retro cool and their parents because they could reminisce about the time and have dialogue with their teenage kids.

The same thing is happening with the 80's...genx father's/mothers are watching it with their teens for the same reason....'Stranger Things' is a hit!

A few more years the 1990s will be in vogue. The key is figuring out the correct teens/parents timeline.

Media LOVES hooking two different generations on the same show.

Ah, the days shall soon come when we shall be reliving neon sportswear, dial-up Internet and the Macarena. I can't wait.

And don't forget to pack your Leisure Suit!

reply

Of course! Lol

i'm ashamed to admit it but I had rebok pumps and levis button your fly t-shirt with the button up jeans, i was never that fashionable but I had that look lol.

oh and don't forget to put your pump up the jam tape in the parent tapeplayer when you are in the car alone lol or c&c music factory or something, i was a nerd, i did like the beatles and the doors though, i was just discovering them at that age

Early 90s to me had a distinctive look and feel with the whole basketball craze and everyone wearing Jordan’s or rebook pump. That period is back in style.

The grunge phase doesn’t seem to be coming back.

Those decades will probably recycle for a while. Maybe next cycle will include 50's and 60's. It's hard to picture the 2000s recycling though, since they seemed to be just nostalgia for past decades.

reply

Good point, the Noughties and Tens don't seem to have an identity of their own, it's all recycled stuff.

reply

Captain Marvel did the 90s nostalgia thing a bit.

reply

The only one so far, I think.

reply

Jurassic World did it too.

The 90s had quite a few good movies, but it hasn't such a distinctive personality as the 60s, 70s or 80s. I don't see how nostalgia is gonna work well there.

reply

That brings up an interesting point...

Nostalgia is based on the longing for the distinct pop culture of one's youth... typically in their late-teens through their 20s.

Pop culture though has been recycling for over twenty years now, and it's just getting worse, particularly with movies. There is less and less of a distinct character to each decade... they are just slights iterations of previous ones. So will nostalgia still be a thing 20 years from now when there is just this blurring of the same thing over and over?

When I was a teen, my dad couldn't handle my music because it was about sex, drugs, social commentary... he couldn't relate to the loud sound of it, the theme of it, etc. Now as an old white guy myself I cannot get into much of my sons' music, movies and fashion. Not because it's outlandish or strange to me. It's because it's so damn boring... I've seen it already over and over. That's just not right. The older generation should be offended by the younger generation... not bored with it.

The only thing that's evolving is technology, and I'm not sure you can feel nostalgic for a period because of its tech.

"Ah, yes, I have fond memories of those days when we needed streaming services to watch a movie. You kids today with your AR brain implants don't know what it means to have fun."

reply

That's just not right. The older generation should be offended by the younger generation... not bored with it.

That sentence is just brilliant. I sums up the problem with the last two decades.

In my case, I don't have any problems to enjoy anything new. Damn, I have completely felt in love with the Anime produced during the last decade. But western culture have become... you're right... boring. Music is boring and repetitive. Modern Hollywood woke movies are like Christian movies, and they have a common feature: they're boring.

reply

The 80s generally sucked for both music and movies. Bring on the 90s, baby!
