What did you watch this week my little grasshopper? (02/09-02/15)

Hey you! Yes you!! What did you watch this week huh!!!???

Here is what I watched!! :

Endgame (2019 blue-ray): The movie starts smoothly and is filled with impressive visuals but at this point I think you really have to be a hardcore fan to really get into all the emotional dialogues and deeper aspects of the story. Personally, I still enjoy it all but I’m not fully invested in it anymore. The first hour slowly builds up the momentum. It’s slow but it’s okay. The second hour starts lifting you up with glorious notes of promising superhero action, although still a bit heavy with conversations and a few cliché-traps were unavoidable on the way (like the fight between the futur-self and past-self or the death of one of the heroes à la Mufasa style). The third hour gathers together all our favorite superheroes for an all out war against the enemy and it was a real blast for both the adult and the child in me. Oh and I really liked what they did with Hulk and Bruce and the small moment between Chris P and Chris H near the end was great! Overall: Spectacular, a lot of fun but not a huge game changer. My rating: 7.5/10

The grand Budapest hotel (2014 TV): This was my third viewing and I enjoyed it a little bit more each time. It’s visually stunning, it’s funny and reminds me of the good French cinema and it has one of the greatest cast ever. The pace is fast so one has to pay attention to fully enjoy this rich and beautiful film. My rating: 8/10

Groundhog Day: Such a well made film. It’s not 100% perfect, obviously, but I wouldn’t change a thing from it. It was good back then and it’s still good today.8/10

Ready or not (2019 Blu-ray): Too bad they decided to go with the intro that spoils quite a bit of what’s to come. I bought this movie because I had to pick another one when I bought Endgame so I went in blindly and would’ve appreciated more mystery (although I already had a good idea of the concept). I wasn’t too sure about the actress talent in the beginning but finally she pulled it off well. There are quite a few jokes but what made me chuckle the most was the total inconsideration of time and logic. For exemple: when daddy is watching a car accident on the phone then three minutes later he’s at the accident site like a mile away. That was funny. Some of the kills felt uninspired and to normal to get me all pumped up and I’m part of those that think the ending ruined the movie a little bit. When nothing happened and the guy said « I knew it was bullshit! » it was such a great moment. But then... let’s just say the good idea quickly splattered on the floor with cheap and loud sound effects. Otherwise, the acting was good (especially Adam Brody from The OC) and the settings, look, atmosphere and feel of the movie were good too. 6.5/10

it's a rare week, where i'm 4/4 - i've seen all of your films. i loved endgame, thought it couldn't have been better given all the water it had to carry, all the boxes it had to check. it's been a few years since i saw grand budapest, but i remember thinking it was probably my favourite anderson, groundhog day is just about a perfect film in my books, and ready or not was good fun.

i like everything.

my week:

the earrings of madame de... (1953) 2.5 classic film about something something something. i know there's something missing in me, something i lack that other people have, but i could not give a shit's dick-ass about any of this. it's 100 minutes of people talking about their feelings and a woman ululating over earrings.

100 grinding, endless minutes where i wanted to be doing anything else besides watching these people talk about their feelings. at least it was relatively short.

dogs don't wear pants (2019) 4 this is more like it. troubled widow rediscovers love for life through visiting a dominatrix. watching this and uncut gems in the same weekend couldn't have done my blood pressure any good.

i went into this blind, had no idea what to expect, and i think, even more so than usual, that really pays dividends with this watch. highly recommended, but go into it reading or watching as little as possible.

blue vengeance (1989) 3.5 very fun zero budget serial killer goodness. lags a bit here and there, as you'd expect, but it's mostly ridiculous and very, very fun.

gas food lodging (1992) 3.5 very comfy, easy to like low-key indie about teen sisters stumbling into adulthood. sad, but not oppressively so. fairuz balk & ione skye were meant to play sisters.

pieces (1982) 4.5 i cannot stop watching this movie.
the first time i watched it, i was pretty baked, & laughed so hard at the tennis scene i threw up on my sister's living room carpet.

i think the tennis player with the long black hair is the foxiest girl i've ever seen in a slasher.

house (1976) 4 a kinder, gentler evil dead?

mutant hunt (1987) 3.5 pure no budget fromage, the kind i like. definitely plays like a movie directed by a guy who spent a lot of time in the adult film world.

this is only a 3.5 star movie for the kinds of people who would rate things like this 3.5 stars.

snowpiercer (2013) 4 i wish memories of murder was more widely available on streaming. it's the one bong film i've yet to see.

i like this fine. it's certainly no parasite...or mother, or even okja. it's a bit too on the nose, but it's still a rousing good time.

the spirit of the beehive (1973) 4 'in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, Ana, a sensitive seven-year-old girl in a rural Spanish hamlet is traumatized after a traveling projectionist screens a print of James Whale’s 1931 “Frankenstein” for the village.'

very pleasant and pleasantly short affair. i gather there's some political undercurrents afoot here that mostly sailed over my head, but it has a very sweet & sombre spirit that i quite enjoyed, even if the larger picture was lost on me.

crazy love (2007) 3.5 truly bizarre documentary on a truly bizarre couple.

i guess i'm grateful for this.
it's nice to have something to point to and say:
'yeah, i'm pretty fucked up.
but at least i'm not that fucked up.'

sorority babes in the slimball bowl-a-rama (1988) 3.5 fun! deeply goofy, and not gory at all, but it's reasonably well paced, and the girls are all attractive. linnea quigley is the chief crowd pleaser, of course, but they're all reasonably foxy at minimum.

not top tier 80s slasher territory, but you'll have a good time, probably.

melancholia (2011) 3.5 one of the popular lines of thought, advanced by pinker recently among many others, is that literature & film has advanced the human condition in the way it gives us windows into other people & what it's like to be such a person.

& i've heard some people say that melancholia is the most realistic, true depiction of depression. i don't know if a lot of people say that, i don't know if academics say this, but it is a thing i've heard some people say.

& all i can say is that, whatever it accomplishes, melancholia makes me feel nothing every time i watch it. i never feel like i get into or under the skin of anyone. it's all surface, no feeling.

maybe it's something missing in me.

anyway, i still think it's an interesting film, if a bit ponderous in the second half. great visuals in the ending. but if we're talking about mysterious planet films, i'd probably rather watch 'another earth.'

adaptation (2002) 5 this is what i want movies to be like.

barking dogs never bite (2000) 3.5 early bong joon-ho about an unemployed college lecturer with no patience for dogs. fun & weird. you could have told me that this was a takashi miike film & i probably would have believed you. it could have been a touch shorter, given the fairly slight tone & subject, but i never got impatient with it.

snatch (2000) 3.5 every second brad pitt is on the screen is pure entertainment.
it's about 1/2 as good the rest of the time imo, but it still adds up to a pretty fun watch.

lol, I'd like to watch Pieces with you someday!

I was always curious about House.

I've been literally looking for memories of murder for the past 7 years or so.

Snowpiercer: A few great scenes and the rest is good. 7/10

Melancholia: nice cinematography but not very entertaining. 6/10

Adaptation: So much fun to watch. 8/10

Barking dogs never bite: one of the greatest atmosphere ever in a film. 9/10

Snatch: Love Ritchie, love Pitt, love the movie. 9/10

Ratings for your watches:

Endgame - 7/10. Dumb but fun.
Grand Budapest Hotel - 8/10. Wes Anderson's been on a pretty hot streak in the last decade especially. I appreciated the overall precisely framed visual splendor.
Groundhog Day - 9/10. Is this one of my all time favs? Bing!
Ready or Not - 6.5/10. Decent slash antics. I'd give it a mild recommendation.

Recent watches from this last week:

Feeding Frenzy (2010) - 6.5/10. A valiant low budget effort from these guys. Scrappy production values, self-aware dialogue and creative practical effects make it an enjoyable romp along the lines of Gremlins, Army of Darkness, and Dead Alive. It utilizes schlocky tropes to their finest whilst delivering a good amount of iridescent gore.

Horse Girl (2020) - 6/10. Pretty good in some areas, not so much in others. While an honest portrait of mental health issues and harboring some decent acting, this movie felt cobbled together from too many disparate parts to make it feel like a whole.

Lifeguard (1976) - 8.5/10. To quote myself, "There's some quintessential 70s attitude on display here, so much that I'm almost positive Tarantino used some elements as inspiration for the recent Once Upon a Time. Sam Elliott plays it smooth and cool as a bachelor getting on in years and facing some tough choices on finding a steadier direction in life. It's not earth-shattering, but in its own way this movie addresses some issues that most of us can identify with. Oozing with coolness and laid back charisma, Lifeguard earns its spot as a bona fide popcorn classic." Additionally, Paul Williams and co. provide a stellar soundtrack.

On Cinema at the Cinema Oscar Special - 10/10. Soon it will be uploaded to Youtube, but for now it's streaming for free on the official site [https://www.adultswim.com/videos/on-cinema-at-the-cinema], and what a ride! It's not my task to explain it to the uninitiated, but suffice to say it's infinitely more entertaining than the official ceremony. An astonishingly well-executed balance of multiple story threads past and future, and for sure a true five bagger.

Those are the highlights. More perhaps to follow.

I love it when you drop by here and you know it.

So what is On Cinema at the Cinema Oscar Special? Like a tv episode of recommendations of movies or what?

reply

Always glad to post recommendations when I can, man.

This year's OC special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCowInr2d0s

I don't know if I can properly encapsulate On Cinema in a nutshell, but I'll take a stab: Imagine a movie review show like Siskel & Ebert, except the hosts are broken codependent narcissists involved in their own independently delusional pursuits. It's an amazing comedy series that spans multiple seasons and spin-offs of dry slow-burn humour. Even so, after Tim and Gregg have created a decade of laughs, it seems like they're just getting started.

I haven't seen any of yours, although I think I started watching The Grand Budapest Hotel a while back. I got bored, but I think I just wasn't in the mood to watch it. It's on my list to try again sometime.

I've been watching The Street, a British show, a series of one-off dramas, each focusing on a different house within the same street. I'm almost finished with the third season and I have to say that they cover some very heavy subjects such as domestic violence, a man seeking asylum in England, and a man accused of being a pervert after he innocently stopped to relieve himself in a park while jogging. He's a teacher and you can probably imagine what it does to his life. 8/10
