What did you watch this week my little grasshopper? (02/09-02/15)

Hey you! Yes you!! What did you watch this week huh!!!???

Here is what I watched!! :

Endgame (2019 blue-ray): The movie starts smoothly and is filled with impressive visuals but at this point I think you really have to be a hardcore fan to really get into all the emotional dialogues and deeper aspects of the story. Personally, I still enjoy it all but I’m not fully invested in it anymore. The first hour slowly builds up the momentum. It’s slow but it’s okay. The second hour starts lifting you up with glorious notes of promising superhero action, although still a bit heavy with conversations and a few cliché-traps were unavoidable on the way (like the fight between the futur-self and past-self or the death of one of the heroes à la Mufasa style). The third hour gathers together all our favorite superheroes for an all out war against the enemy and it was a real blast for both the adult and the child in me. Oh and I really liked what they did with Hulk and Bruce and the small moment between Chris P and Chris H near the end was great! Overall: Spectacular, a lot of fun but not a huge game changer. My rating: 7.5/10

The grand Budapest hotel (2014 TV): This was my third viewing and I enjoyed it a little bit more each time. It’s visually stunning, it’s funny and reminds me of the good French cinema and it has one of the greatest cast ever. The pace is fast so one has to pay attention to fully enjoy this rich and beautiful film. My rating: 8/10

Groundhog Day: Such a well made film. It’s not 100% perfect, obviously, but I wouldn’t change a thing from it. It was good back then and it’s still good today.8/10

Ready or not (2019 Blu-ray): Too bad they decided to go with the intro that spoils quite a bit of what’s to come. I bought this movie because I had to pick another one when I bought Endgame so I went in blindly and would’ve appreciated more mystery (although I already had a good idea of the concept). I wasn’t too sure about the actress talent in the beginning but finally she pulled it off well. There are quite a few jokes but what made me chuckle the most was the total inconsideration of time and logic. For exemple: when daddy is watching a car accident on the phone then three minutes later he’s at the accident site like a mile away. That was funny. Some of the kills felt uninspired and to normal to get me all pumped up and I’m part of those that think the ending ruined the movie a little bit. When nothing happened and the guy said « I knew it was bullshit! » it was such a great moment. But then... let’s just say the good idea quickly splattered on the floor with cheap and loud sound effects. Otherwise, the acting was good (especially Adam Brody from The OC) and the settings, look, atmosphere and feel of the movie were good too. 6.5/10

Hey you! My ratings of what you watched this week:

Endgame 10/10 I loved everything about this and was completely satisfied with the experience.
The grand Budapest hotel 7/10 I love Wes Anderson, but this is not one of his best films, in my opinion. The cast is fantastic and it is stylish and has great visuals, but not enough substance for me.
Groundhog Day 6/10 I feel this is overrated. It is an alright comedy, but nothing special.
Ready or not 7/10 I enjoyed this. It was amusing and pretty fun.

My ratings of what I watched:

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) 6/10
A Lovely Way to Die (1968) 5/10
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made (2020) 8/10
For Love or Money (1963) 7/10
The Nice Guys (2016) 7/10
Vincent (2014) 6/10
Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015) 8/10
Baywatch (2017) 7/10
711 Ocean Drive (1950) 7/10
The Thing About Harry (2020) 8/10

'The cast is fantastic and it is stylish and has great visuals, but not enough substance for me.' Thats how I felt the first time I saw it!

' I feel this is overrated. It is an alright comedy, but nothing special.' I feel you but maybe the fact that I sued to watch it when I was young helped my rating.

Yours:

The nice guys: 7/10
St-Vincent: I think thats the one you mean and I loved it! 8/10

The Vincent I watched was not St. Vincent but this one:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3636528/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3

It's a low budget French film about a man with super powers, directed by and starring Thomas Salvador.

reply

oh, ok. YEah, it looks... interesting I guess. I wonder how you stumbled onto that film

reply

It's on Amazon Prime and I was just browsing through what they had and thought it sounded interesting.

You haven't replied yet to last week's "what did you watch thread" where I watched so many movies I had to spread it over three posts. Don't forget to check out my posts there and please reply to those.

Just Mercy (2019) - World-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner. Michael B Jordan is not much of an actor. Jamie Foxx was good as the wrongly convicted man. I well told story with a good look at the injustice brought upon one man because he was black. 7/10

High Wall (1947) - After a brain-damaged man confesses to murder and is committed, Dr. Ann Lorrison tries to prove his innocence. A bit too far fetched of a film noir and Robert Taylor was his usual wooden self. Audrey Totter was good as the doctor. 6.5/10

Town Without Pity (1961) - Four American soldiers stationed near a German village face death in the rape of a local girl, and are defended by outside counsel Major Steve Garrett. A very good message movie with a fine performance from Kirk Douglas. Never trust the mob would be the byline for this movie. 7.5/10

Hud (1963) - Honest and hard-working Texas rancher Homer Bannon has a conflict with his unscrupulous, selfish, arrogant and egotistical son Hud, who sank into alcoholism after accidentally killing his brother in a car crash. A great modern day western. Maybe Paul Newman's best performance. Melvyn Douglas is sublime in his Oscar winning role. 8/10

Bob le Flambeur (1956) - After losing big, an aging gambler decides to assemble a team to rob a casino. Not much action in this heist movie but a good character study of an aging thief and gambler trying for one last payoff. 7/10

Last Train from Gun Hill (1959) - A marshal tries to bring the son of an old friend, an autocratic cattle baron, to justice for his role in the rape and murder of the marshal's Native American wife. A gem of a western with another fine performance from Kirk Douglas. I thought anthony Quinn as miscast. 7/10

The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) - Concentration camp survivor Victoria Kowelska finds herself involved in mystery, greed, and murder when she assumes the identity of a dead friend in order to gain passage to America. Loved Richard Basehart - the guy should have had a bigger career. A good supporting cast and a fine story. 7/10

Submergence - A chance encounter on a beach in France leads to an intense and enduring romance between two strangers who are on very different paths and bound for trying circumstances. (7/10)

Movies;

-Parasite (2020)
I do not got the love for this movie. The premise is interesting and it starts out okay, but then it turns into one big, far-fetched mess with a totally unsubtle social message. It's just another Get Out where the elite pats itself on the back about how PC they are.

-Lucy (2014)
I hate it when you're forced to watch crap on tv because the person with the remote claims there's nothing else on tv! What the hell was this crap? Just a bunch of random scenes offering nothing but CGI that gave me a headache!

TV Shows:

-The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Twilight Zone (1959) - marathon

-Murder She Wrote - marathon

I so want to see parasite. One of my favorite directors.

I can't rate Endgame, because I was a bit intoxicated when I watched it, so I slept through the middle hour lol.

The grand Budapest hotel 8/10
Groundhog Day 7/10
Ready or not: Haven't seen it

I watched: Office Space (1999). I was looking for something under 90 minutes. This was my choice because I was curious about the origin of the 'that would be great' meme. I got some (but few) funny one-liners and Aniston's pretty face, and those saved this otherwise weak movie. 5,5/10.

reply

I too saw Office Space for the first time only a few years ago and it was okay. 6/10
