Did people ever collectively watch tv in a bar? (Storytelling device)

I notice movies do this a lot. They have people in a bar watching something on tv and giving their two cents.

It’s a storytelling device to provide the peoples say.

But did or does this ever happen?

reply

Definitely. But it's usually sports.

reply

Especially when it’s a big event; World Cup, Olympics etc

reply

College football, NASCAR.

reply

Yes, watching sports

reply

I've only ever seen it for sports, yes.

MU UNCLE USED TO OWN A BAR...HE WAS A BIG OSCAR FAN...THE BAR HAD OSCAR NIGHT..EVERYONE DRESSED UP AND AND DRANK AND WATCHED LIKE A GROUP...

reply

That sounds awesome

reply

I agree!
That sounds fun

reply

Or when someone sees a picture of themselves on the news because the police are looking for them. Or some other report that interests them and they tell everyone to be quiet and turn up the sound. Ridiculous.

reply

Yes I’ve seen that a lot. “Oh look, I’m on tv.”

reply

sports or breaking news of some kind.

reply

When OJ ran from the cops the bar i was at turned the music off and everyone watched.

reply

That's cool

reply

Yeah, me too. I was at a bar with my father and the entire room went quiet and was transfixed.

reply

You were at a bar with your dad in the middle of the day? That's awesome.

reply

I had always thought it was the weekend because of that so I checked and it was on a Friday. But the chase actually happened in the afternoon in July (longer days) and we're on the east coast so 3 hours later. We must've met there after work.
Yeah...I hung out with my Dad whenever I could. Everyone wanted to hang out with him. He was a great guy.
We ended up following the OJ trial on radio and tv closely and talking about it all the time. We may be one of the few that didn't start out thinking him guilty but ended up totally convinced he was.

reply

My pops was fun to hang with as well. I remember the OJ murders and trial well. The Oklahoma City bomber was around the same time. I was on vacation when both those crimes happened.

reply

Sports. I never watched a movie in a bar.

reply

Definitely. People used to meet in bars to watch popular television shows, maybe they still do, I'm not part of the bar scene anymore. But various bars in my area would have Survivor night, or Friends, or other popular shows; I'm pretty sure some did TWD back in the beginning. Some bars specialize in particular sports teams, like a bar down the street used to be Miami Dolphins central and they would get big crowds until it shut down for whatever reason. If you mean normal TV, like news, that tends to be in small taverns with guys hanging out after work, at least in my experience. Another local bar I used to frequent would play various action sports like skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, racing, and we would sit and talk about it.
