Classic actors that you can't believe got old.

Everyone gets old. That's a fact of life. But has there ever been an actor for you whose advanced age kind of shocked you because it seemed as if they could never get old? As in, they had an ageless, youthful quality to them? Or because they looked so much "of our time" that it's a shock to see them as elderly?

For example, I can't get over the fact that Audrey Hepburn got old. Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, OK. But Hepburn seemed as if she was going to be young forever because when she was in her 30s, she ironically looked much younger, like someone in her teens.

Another example, Brigitte Bardot. At the peak of her career, she looked so modern that you would think she was only a star 30 years ago. So, in my mind, I keep thinking that she's only in her 60s, not in her 80s.

Another example for me is Burt Reynolds. I can't square the last images of him being a frail, little man with a cane with the guy that he was when he was younger.

Kirk Douglas comes immediately to mind.

Ditto.

Well we all know everyone ages but I get what you mean. I am a big fan of costume dramas which are basically romances set back in the 1800's. I have rewatched them quite a bit so I am used to the actors being always frozen in time. Then when I see recent photos of them it's a bit jarring.

Yes, Burt Reynolds is the best, (or worst) example of what you're talking about. The worst thing those people can do is to try to retain as much of their former appearance as possible. The trouble is, ageing makes them look utterly unlike the young person they once were. In facial planes, hair colour, eyebrows, etc, and in their whole facial demeanour, they often look like an entirely different individual.

It's hard to believe that, if Burt Reynolds at 82 had been magically de-aged to 36, the resultant young Reynolds would look like the young Burt Reynolds we're familiar with. Obviously, of course, he would. But his aged appearance makes it difficult to imagine. One always assumes that when people get old, they look like the people they used to be, but with gray hair and wrinkles. It's not so, apparently.

Your post reminds me of how David Hemmings practically transformed into a completely different person by the time he died. It was the same with him as it was with Reynolds. It's impossible to look at him when he was older and see the young guy that he used to be. He started out looking like a sexy young stud and then ended up looking like a stereotypical crusty conservative British politician.

Good grief!

I can almost kind of see a ghost of his younger self inside that older face. I can't quite say exactly what it is that remains. Perhaps the nose, and the fatty pouches under the eyes, which he had when young.

But otherwise, as an older man, he looked like an actor who was born to play Shakespeare's Falstaff.

reply

Wow! Doesn't look like the same person at all. I looked at the young photo and I had no idea who he is. Then I looked at the old photo of him and immediately recognized him from Gladiator.

Gene Hackman.

Clint..I want Clint to be around after I'm gone

reply

I was surprised Liam Neeson is 67. But he doesn't even look that old.

reply

Liam Neeson's face is probably too rock-hard to sag into wrinkles.

reply

Gene Hackman
Tom Skerritt (87)
Sean Connery
Arnie and Sly are looking their age now as well

I'll consider him an actor because he did Shaggy's voice for all those years, I'm going to consider him an actor and say Dick Clark. Guy looked like he was 40 for about 60 years then all of a sudden he was old and frail. Must have given up the One Ring to Ryan Seacrest.

reply

Casey Kasem voiced Shaggy, not Dick Clark.

reply

You are absolutely right. I always mix up those two in my mind.

reply

True about Dick Clark. It was so bizarre seeing him in his last years looking the way he did, when his claim to fame was being "America's oldest teenager."
