Depends. I'll take Tom for an action role, and even a drama like Magnolia, but overall DDL is a better actor. Tom would win in kickboxing.

shareMore versatile? I don't think Tommy would touch movies like My Beautiful Launderette, My Left Foot and Lincoln, or have the skill to make them believable. I think DDL's choices have been far more diverse than Cruise's.

I do see what you mean though, in terms of genres Cruise does tend to go for crowd-pleasing over award-winning.
I have no real beef with Cruise. In fact, it's probably unfair to compare such completely different actors. There is definitely a place for them both, but pitting them against each other is a bit like comparing apples and oranges.
Tom Cruise vs Brad Pitt, or DDL vs Anthony Hopkins would both be fairer fights.
