With Off Beat (1986), nyctc7 uncovers a hidden gem in a strong character-based comedy that was overlooked by many at the time of release. The setup, contrived as it is, paves the way for some revealing moments and genuinely funny story payoffs that seem more in line with a mid-2000s indie flick than a light and zany mainstream 80s comedy. With an astonishingly eclectic cast and a weird tropical/steel drum-themed original score for some reason, it's an odd combination that works out to be greater than the sum of its parts.
