What did you watch this week sweetheart? (01/20-01/25)

Lots of snow, lots of shoveling, lots of cold...a few movies:

Malstrom (2000 TV): Guys, Guys! Y’all know this cat called Denis Villeneuve right? Well way back he shot that flick in my hometown and let me tell you what... it’s a fucking masterpiece! I’m like wow, this cat works backwards cuz he done start his career strong and finished weak! Okay I’m cranked but seriously; the actress was amazing and of a pure beauty, the soundtrack majestic, the story was as powerful as Incendies and every scene was filled with deadly, lovely purpose. 8.5-9/10

Black Beauty (1994 DVD): This movie made me feel all good and fuzzy inside. For horse lovers and it’s a good family movie too!I love horses... and I have a family. 7.5/10

Stir of echoes (1999 Blu-ray): I bought this mainly because I saw some of you guys talk about it on this board. It didn’t disappoint. Strong points: The story, the cinematography, the atmosphere. Low points: the acting was uneven and I’m not too sure about the final scene. My rating: 7-7.5/10

The wife and I started the show You on Netflix. It has romance, it has suspense and it has murders so it’s a great combination for the both of us. Right now, at episode 7, I’d rate it an overall of 7/10.

This week I watched:

The Fabulous Patars (2016) 9/10
The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992) 7/10
Revenge of the Nerds (1984) 6/10
Batman Ninja (2018) 7/10
Norbit (2007) 6/10
Death Defying Acts (2007) 7/10
Freaks (2018) 8/10

reply

What did you think of ' Death Defying Acts ' in more detail ?

reply

I thought it was somewhat interesting, but could have been better. Performances were good, especially Saoirse Ronan. It was a little slow at times, but still worth watching.

reply

Yes it's not a great film but Saoirse Ronan was great in it. I think that the romance between Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce was a difficult one to sell. CZJ played her part as something of a hardened character and it wasn't easy to see how anyone could fall for her. But of course Houdini was attracted to her because she reminded him of his mother which is just a whole new level of weird. And then of course Benji (Saoirse) had a crush on him as well !

So although it is a problematic film it has kind of icky depths to it.

reply

None of yours but PVR’s revenge of the nerds

Something did not sit quite right with me when I caught a couple of episodes of You. It’s maybe because of all the parallels with Dexter or something about the feel. I would go one less than you at a 6/10.

My week:
Undefeatable (1993)
A crazed martial arts guy with mommy issues is stalking and killing women who look like his ex wife. Bonkers crazy action flick with numerous logic defying scenes.

A Single Shot (2013)
Tragic hunting accident uncovers stash of cash. Cool back woods thriller without the Hollywood formula is different and recommended.

Manhunt in the City (1975)
Lenzi directs this vigilante Euro Crime drama complete with reliably strong performance by Silvia. Great entry for genre fans.

Killing Birds (1988)
A group of college kids searching for a rare woodpecker stumble across a dead body. Directed by Joe D’Amato this slow burn horror entry possesses many dream like sequences along with zombie mayhem. Great watch for obscure horror fans.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974)
After a parent dies and the following voodoo ritual, strange things start to happen around Sylvia. Very well done Giallo-horror film!

Rolling Thunder (1977)
The broken Major Charles Rayne returns home from years in a Vietnamese POW camp to violence at home. Great performance by William Devane who’s mental pain is shown through his expression rather than words. There’s something I always love about Linda Haynes! Story by a Paul Schrader. Highly recommended.

Miami Connection (1987)
Kung fu Orphan rockers get mixed up with the mob, a group of ninjas and one insanely jealous brother. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this but the soundtrack stays in my head for weeks after. Look for the tear jerker scene where one of the group discovers he’s not an orphan. 👍👍👍

"My father. My father! I found my father! OH MY GAWD!"

Yes Fred! Yes I said! Those who know that scene are indeed in a special club!!

Keep a lid on it Luke !

This one clip says a lot. Check out the Asian dudes guitar skills. We even get to see the jealous brother. 🤪

I like seeing that you found and enjoyed, A Single Shot. In hindsight, I realize I jumped the gun (pun unintended but apropos) when submitting this as a "cheesy" action flick. In my enthusiasm I confused it with underrated.

Btw, I also really liked Rolling Thunder when I first saw it in my younger days.

reply

Yes indeed! Thank you so much for the recommendation and I did not find it cheesy at all. 👍

reply

Somehow I just find Rolling Thunder so kick ass. The way Rayne’s rage just builds through the whole thing combined with his alienation from everyone he knows is heartfelt to me. I think it’s a more complicated film than most give it credit for.

reply

I had the same reaction to it when I first saw it and I thought the title was such an apt metaphor for that mounting and ominous rage you mention. Of course, I was a teenager growing up in a military family during the 70s at that time, so there was an element of hero worship going on for me. I think it's become one of those cult-following movies.

reply

I agree. The DVD I have is very plain and from MGM. I wish Arrow Or someone would pick it up and give it a proper packaging and some extras.

Another of it’s highlights we have not mentioned is the young Tommy Lee Jones. 👍

Some good stuff in there, thanks for the contribution mrmojo

Carlito's Way (1993) - A Puerto Rican former convict, just released from prison, pledges to stay away from drugs and violence despite the pressure around him and lead on to a better life outside of N.Y.C. Better than Scarface - not so over the top. One of Pacino's best performances. 8/10

The People Against O'Hara (1951) - Jim Curtayne, formerly a successful defense attorney who is now a recovering alcoholic, attempts a comeback when he defends a neighbor's son facing a homicide charge. Spencer Tracy could not save this film noir. I now know why I hadn't heard of it before. A bad script. 6.5/10

Body and Soul (1947) - A talented boxer's young career hits difficult terrain when an unethical promoter takes interest in him. The perfect combo of sport and film noir. The who plays Roberts is great. William Conrad is also great in a small role. 8/10

Night and the City (1950) - A small-time grifter and nightclub tout takes advantage of some fortuitous circumstances and tries to become a big-time player as a wrestling promoter. How did I not see this before today?? Wonderful film noir with Richard Widmark who was Oscar nominee worthy. Great supporting cast and a number of story lines involved in this movie. 8/10

Southern Comfort (1981) - During a routine exercise, a team of National Guards are threatened by angry and violent locals. Another first time look at this B grade action/thriller. Powers Boothe is great in the lead role. Can't go wrong with this low budget flick. 7.5/10

The Unsuspected (1947) - : The secretary of an affably suave radio mystery host mysteriously commits suicide after his wealthy young niece disappears. Too many plot questions to put this in the higher grade of film noir movies. A great premise but not carried out very well. Claude Rains was solid as usual in the lead role. 6.5/10

Carlito’s way: I agree with your rating but I disagree about Scarface. 8.5/10 for me

1917 (2020 Theater) What can I say about this one except wow! I'm not usually super into behind the scenes and "the making of" features but this is one I'd be interested in. There are lengthy shots seemingly without a cut that I imagine took either superb editing or incredible discipline from the cast and crew (probably a combo of both). Oh and on top of being cinematically phenomenal, it also has great performances and plot. 9/10

A Fall From Grace (2020 Netflix) Tyler Perry wrote, directed and performed in a supporting role. This one is tough to rate because I felt like it was severely lacking in many ways. The acting was often weak (at times laughably bad) and the plot was pretty sloppy. Still, I couldn't stop watching and almost like a Lifetime movie there was something kinda enjoyable and comforting about it. Although I can't in good conscience give this a high score this feels like a fun one to watch with a friend or two and laugh at the ridiculousness of it. NOTE: if you want more info on this movie do not go to the moviechat board for it unless you want a major plot point spoiled. As of right now there is only one post which gives away something big in the subject line. 5/10

It was the first time since Christmas that I could watch two movies consecutively.
First was: Tomb Raider (2018) - I haven't played the game, but my fiancée have, and she said the movie was nostalgic for her. Alicia Vikander was hot, and I like "Scooby Doo stlye" stories, where something that seems supernatural or myterious turns out to be ordinary in the end. Although some of the scenes were too predictable, which kills the tension. 7/10

Then: Drive (2011) - After like 15 minutes I realized I had already seen this lol. Sometime around it came out. Didn't leave much of an impression... Even at second viewing. Character motives were hazy, the gory scenes and the soundtrack saved the average story for me. 5,5/10
