Poll: Do You Look Up the Baker's Dozen Results on IMDb?

Do you usually research any unknown to you titles that make it onto our game lists?

reply

Quite frequently, yes
It's what I'm mostly here for, the movie talk...I do go off the rails sometimes:/

reply

All good in the hood Shoge man!

reply

only for the year.

reply

Or, to clarify, I mean, once the list of 13 has been completed, do you then look up any of the titles other people named that you haven't seen?

(I think how one comes up with their entries is don't ask / don't tell, though it's of course more fun if you think of them organically.)

reply

I usually remember the thing that was asked in a movie I watched somewhere some time but forgot the exact title so I google it.

reply

FWIW, I do maybe 50% of the time, in part depending on how interesting the topic is, and then I'm more inclined to look up titles from before ~1995 than those after.

reply

“ I'm more inclined to look up titles from before ~1995 than those after.”

Exactly ☝️

I do appreciate it when people list movies and include a date because I am more interested in older films also. I probably have a list of 20 to watch now and half are from recommendations or list here. I really got a bunch off that lesser known horror films thread a while back. 👍

reply

Totally, I scooped a bunch off that thread too.
My IMDb watchlist is up to an outrageous and unweildy 4.2k titles right now, in part thanks to good ole MC.
Bless'd are the date listers. It's the little things!

reply

4.2k? Wow!!
Is it just a running list or is it sub divided into genres or something? I know people throw around the word amazing, but it is quite fitting here! 😀

I try to watch two films a night when I can. I concentrate on one genre, currently Italian 70’s Poliziotteschi, and one recommendation from here on MC.

reply

Probably more like, amazing-ly compulsive, in a hopeless sort of way. 🙃

It's all just a jumble, but IMDb lets you sort the list by genre, year, and all sorts of other categories. And then sometimes I use a random watchlist title generator plugin that basically re-orders your list at random. Useful, but it's been a bit busted since a few IMDb updates ago. Kind of wish there were even more ways of organizing it. It definitely gets hard to find something specific you might be thinking of sometimes amidst 4000 flicks. Every time I peruse the list I have to consciously try to keep my cool or I'll get way too stoked to watch a bunch of different things at once. During the seasons where I'm mostly in the studio working all day every day, like now, I have flicks rolling almost all the time.

That's cool! I love the strategy and dedication of that. I definitely get on kicks too, where I have to see all of a certain type of thing, but I'm also super impulsive and get off on tangents all the time. Rn I'm sort of doing catch up on 80s supernatural tv series? What are a few poliziotteschis I should add to the wad?

reply

That’s sometimes a hard question because this genre can be somewhat an acquired taste. I’ve recommended these to people and many times and their common reply might be something along the lines of “what did I just watch?” Most are gritty and violent filled with ugly men, beautiful women, shootouts, gratuitous nudity, non stop drinking and car chases. I swear there’s some kind of product placement for J&B whisky throughout the entire genre. Oh, and since I know your exquisite taste in music, they are usually accompanied by a kick ass soundtrack. Another thing I love about them is that the Italian directors tended to go with the flow of what’s popular at any given time. So the same directors who pumped out the spaghetti westerns of the 60’s might switch to poliziotteschi or giallo for a while in the 70’s and possibly transition to horror or adventure into the 80’s. for example if your a Fulci or Lenzi horror fan it’s interesting to see their style applied to a Eurocrime film.

I would say to try Street Law or Italian Connection for starters.

Street Law (1974) benefits from a great actor like Franco Nero as lead and a wonderful soundtrack. It’s your basic citizens revenge against crooks without help of the inept and corrupt police scenario.

Italian Connection (1972) is one of my favorites with Henry Silva (with his Stone face) and former NFL player Woody Strode as two American hit men sent to Italy to conduct a hit on a low level pimp. Mario Adorf, as the pimp, has a face made for these films and earned whatever he was paid after all the running he did in this production. This trailer is so damn 70’s:

Lastly, here is a link to a cool documentary trailer on Eurocrime showing interviews with bad asses like John Saxon. Tons of titles to pick from:

Right! I definitely think it's interesting that a lot of the giallo and 70s horror directors also did westerns and police films and whatever else was happening at the time, and how you can see or not the bleedthru of the different genres and style across one director's work. For Fulci, I've seen The New York Ripper and Contraband. Man with Fulci it's super interesting watching some of the random other genres he did, like White Fang. Don't think I've done any Lenzi police flicks yet. Anyway, I'm very down to get some hepatitis off this stuff! Thanks for the links, will check out! John Saxon!!

reply

I think White Fang has Franco Nero also! 👍

reply

Yup it does! Super weird one.

reply

I only look up the years because it seems listing the year is preferred here. Occasionally I will look up a specific title if I'm not sure of it's spelling of it's complete title.

reply

Cool, same.
What about once the list of 13 is completed? Do you usually look up the titles other peeps submitted if you haven't already seen them?

reply

I think I did twice so far. That's about it.

No. Is it worth it?

Mixed nuts, Movieman... Mixed nuts.

One of the cool things about MC is that it provides lots of random wormholes to discovery. Sometimes I'll pull up one unknown title from a game here on IMDb that leads down winding avenues to tons of awesome shit I never would have had an entry point for, and life continues to rip.

If like me your brain is an information black hole that never stops sucking, there's no choice in the matter—you simply must know all. And that means occasionally you're gonna swallow an ass-teroid or two. But bro, end of the day, ALL GOOD—y'black hole, baby—turning shit into anti-matter, s'what'cha do. 😎

reply

Okay then. I take that as a "yes"?

😎

reply

Sometimes. It's a good way to find movies you didn't know about.

reply

Most I can remember, but sometime have to check for dates or exact title names. But to answer your question, yes when stumped i will.

reply

How about when the list of 13 is completed, do you often go through and pull up any titles others named that you're unfamiliar with?

reply

When I do an "Extra" it's usually something I'm familiar with but missed the count.

reply

Lol sorry Paladin mate I mean, do you use the completed lineup of titles as a reference to then go learn about any of the movies that ended up on the list, that you haven't seen yet?
