A song was playing on a piano and I said what’s this song from? And he said “it’s not from anything, it’s Beethoven”. I guess the proper phrasing would be “what’s this song been featured in”. But he knew what I meant.

shareIt does sound like a mild rebuke to me. Some people think everyone over a certain age should be familiar with the more well known works of Beethoven.
I love classical music but I would never say that to someone because it is frequently used in movies, so I would probably have responded, " I didn't realize that music by Beethoven had been used in a movie," or something like that.
sharemost people don't know anything about classical music so i wouldn't worry about it.
