How much sleep do you need? 😴

How many hours of sleep do you think you need to feel rested and rarin' to go?

I work best on 7 hours of sleep, but 9 is really nice if I've had a particularly physical day. Six hours means I can function okay, but run out of energy by evening.

reply

8 hours min. Less than that I'll feel like shit all day and will need unecessary cups of coffee.

Which is hard for me because I'm an Asian and people constantly scold me of being a lazy pig. It's an Asian thing, you know. All has to wake up really early and work as hard as one can and then some. Normally people around here only sleep for 5-6 hours max. 7 is already pushing it. While I need at least 8. It's terrible. Nobody would care. Just get your ass up you lazy bum, they say.

This is clearly taking it's toll on my body. I'm not even 40 yet but already has a head with plenty strands of white hair.

reply

Dang! That's unfair. And how frustrating! Everyone's needs are different. You can't help it that you need at least eight hours to feel good. Someone who's persistently tired isn't going to be as sharp or productive. I feel for you.

reply

Thanks. But yeah, it's kinda unfair but such is life. I'll admit I, too, sometimes don't care to people that have, say, intelligence challenges, and scold them as being lazy and not wanting to learn such simple tasks, etc. Happens a lot at work.

But then sometimes I also realize yeah what if they just really can't because we have different brain capabilities, not that they were unwilling to learn. So, life is pretty much unfair I guess.

reply

People think Asians are lazy?

reply

Some are.

reply

the ones i know are well educated and ambitious.

reply

Probably true for Asians in the West. Asians in Asia, where I live, have more variety.

reply

good point.

reply

6-8 is normal. I used to survive on 2 when I first started the business (I still don’t know how I managed it).

reply

You had a reason for surviving on just a couple of hours sleep. I worked an overnight shift for a couple of years when my youngest child was barely two years old. My now-ex didn't understand how hard it was being up all night, and then having to get the older two off to school, take care of the youngest and have to wait until he took his afternoon nap before I could catch a few Zs. Yeah, my ex was a jerk sometimes.

reply

Which is why he’s your ex.

reply

Yep, that's part of it.

reply

4 hours

reply

I do fine with 6 hours, but I generally fall asleep as my head hits the pillow and sleep like a rock. I also work from home and can take a 20 minute power nap in the afternoon.

reply

5-6 hours per night.

reply

As with anything else, it depends. What time did I get up? What did I do? What was my stress level? What meds have I taken today? Have I been drinking today?
Sometimes I can get by 4 hours. Or I can only sleep 4 hours. If I'm detoxing I've slept all day.
But as a general rule - 6 to 8 hours.

reply

I have insomnia so I take prescribed medication (Trazadone and melatonin) to get at least nine hours sleep.

reply

I took Trazadone for a few months when I was having sleeping problems. I could fall asleep just fine, but then would wake up several times a night and have trouble getting back to sleep. I tried melatonin but it didn't help at all. Thankfully, I'm off Trazadone now.

reply

Have you tried Ativan?

reply

No, I haven't. How does that help? I mean, how is it different from Trazadone?

reply

I dunno. I haven't tried it myself. I know it's an anti-anxiety medication that makes you drowsy and sleepy. Also, you may want to consider Halcion as well; it's got amnesia properties as well.

reply

My dad was on Ativan during the last few months of his life. I always thought of it as something to help with anxiety, and didn't realize it makes you sleepy/drowsy.

reply

Try Halcion actually. I think it has a better effect for sleep. https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-6816/halcion-oral/details

reply

Ativan is a benzodiazepine that is highly addictive.
(anti-anxiety)

reply

8 hours, unless I'm sick. Pretty average for an adult.
