The Man Who Wasn't There. Why did Big Dave punch Ed Crane？

Ed's wife was having an affair with Dave. But Dave didn't know Ed already knew that. How come Dave called Ed up in the middle of night and started to punch and choke him? What's his intention?

He figured Ed blackmaild him somehow. I don't remember how,but he did. I think Jon Polito's character told him or something.
