Worst Decade for Film?

What does everyone think is the decade that has produced the worst films?

reply

Either the 80s, 90s, 00s, or 10's

reply

So basically the last 40 years, lol.

reply

exactly - music, too. I can't think of anything great from the last 40 years.

reply

The last one.

reply

to me the decline starts in the 90’s and it’s a parabolic descent from there.

reply

The decline didn't even remotely start in the 1990s. There were more classic films produced in the 1990s than the 1980s and 1970s combined. In 1999 alone, there were these movies: The Matrix, Fight Club, Eyes Wide Shut, Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, American Beauty, Life is Beautiful, Shakespeare in Love, The Iron Giant and Princess Mononoke.

I agree that the 90's had tons of amazing movies! And many of these you're mentioning I absolutely love. But I find the tendencies and factors that lead us to where we are now began sometime that decade.

To put it another way, in this image, the tiny domino would be the 90's, and the big one is today:

Probably this decade, but the 00s were pretty bad too. Going further back, the 70s were mostly bleak.

reply

70s films are so ridiculous that they have become comedy. There are exceptions of course. "Mean Streets" for example.

reply

Any that were liked at the time but turn into comedy now? I do like the usual picks: Dirty Harry, Carrie, Assault on P13, etc

reply

There are a lot of beach movies shot in LA in the 70's. Every one of those is hilarious to watch now. There is always someone with a van and there is usually lots of nudity.

reply

Hey, the early 2000s had some great films! I greatly miss movies and tv from that time period because they were a helluva lot better than the shit they peddle today!

reply

Definitely a lot better than now, but none of my favorites are from them. Name some classics from that era?

reply

You would have to go through a list, there's too many for me to name. Plus, 10 years is a long time period to cover.

reply

2010's. A bunch of comic book super-hero BS. You have some good animated films made for youngsters but my kid is an adult now so I don't even bother to watch them, although some do have important lessons.

This decade has been the death-rattle for character-driven dialogue heavy films. They make no money at the box office so the ones that are made are out of love for the craft I suppose.

reply

1940s were a bit shit.

reply

I would have said this one, but that's not being fair to the other decades in film history, is it?

reply

There can only be one worst.

reply

Going with the 1800s.
