How Is Taylor Swift Named Artist Of The Decade Before The Decade Is Over?

Does the answer entail a crystal ball or a time machine? The final year of the current decade is 2020. Got a whole ‘nother year to
go. A lot can happen in a year.

Eschew ignorance.

reply

Is this right? Isn't 2019 the last year of the decade and 2020 the first of the next?

reply

You're right. Just like 1999 was the last year of the 20th century.

reply

No, it was not. I will say this only once, and it is not subject to debate, because fact is not debatable. The Calendar we use STARTED with the Year 1. The first decade of our calendar was years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Is that clear? Are we all good? Human ages differ 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 calendar ages. We are born at age 0. When someone says to a Mum, “What a cute babe. How old is she?,” we reply something like “Eight months.” When we hit 1 year old, we are in our SECOND YEAR of life! When the Calendar for Time on Earth hits Year 2, we are Beginning the second year of life on earth under that calendar. There NEVER WAS a year 0 on the calendar. I know this feels counterintuitive, because we think of time in terms of our personal age, but this is the fact.

reply

I did a little research on this and you're right. I stand corrected.

The 21st (twenty-first) century is the current century of the Anno Domini era or Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. It began on January 1, 2001, and will end on December 31, 2100.It is the first century of the 3rd millennium. It is distinct from the century known as the 2000s which began on January 1, 2000, and will end on December 31, 2099. - Wikipedia

I hate being wrong but I will admit when I am.

reply

It is not subject to debate. I hope everyone got that because it will only be said once. Your arrogance is magnificent, you’re like everyone’s least favourite teacher in high school.

Thanks all the same but I’ll debate what I want, with or without your approval.

reply

Well the third millennium didn’t really start until 2001 since there was no year zero. Even though most people celebrated it a year earlier in 2000.

reply

Thank you. Most media outlets, which influence most people, are facile and stupid AND pander to
the dumbest common thinking. Why does one think Arthur C. Clarke named his novel 2001(A SpaceOdyssey) [sic]? BECAUSE 2001 was the FIRST year of the 21st century! Sheesh!

reply

How is she even considered an artist?

reply

She's pretty.

reply

She has nice legs too.

reply

Preety face + nice legs = best artist evaarrrr!!!

reply

She is attractive but that still makes an artist.

reply

Yep, I always thought a decade was years 1 through 10, not 0 through 9.

reply

Really? So 1960 is in the 50s?

reply

According to what I learned back in the dark ages, yes. 1960 is the final year of the 1950s. 1951 is year 1, and 1960 is year 10. Obviously a lot of folks today define it differently.

reply

God-damned Google lied to me the shifty bitch lol Here's what I got when I asked when do the 2020s start...

The 2020s (pronounced "twenty-twenties" or "two thousand (and) twenties", shortened to "the '20s") is the upcoming decade in the Gregorian calendar that will begin on 1 January 2020, and will end on 31 December 2029.

reply

Like I said, in the olden days...and yes, nowadays it is very common to think that the decade ends in the year 9.

I've been wondering for years why so many folks insist on saying "two thousand and fifteen" or whatever. What the heck is wrong with saying twenty-fifteen? I've been saying twenty-whatever since 2001, twenty-oh-one. It's easier. And we weren't saying "one thousand nine hundred and whatever" in the 1900s. Oh, and I never regressed to saying "twenty aught one."

reply

I'm with you, I've been saying twenty-whatever too.

I wonder now that we're almost out of the teens whether we'll collectively drop the twenty and just go back to saying the decade - like the 20s, 30s, 40s etc. And will we give them nick-names like in the 1900s? "The roaring 20s" and so on... Only time will tell I guess.

reply

Interesting question about the roaring 20s. I don't recall any other decade names. Do you? Obviously some decades were dominated by world events, like the Great Depression in the 30s, WWII in the 40s, etc., but I don't think they spawned any names.

reply

Now that you mention it... ummm... ooh THE SWINGING SIXTIES! That's the only one I can think of though.

reply

That's about the only one I can think of, and I think it was more a thing in the UK than in the US. I could be wrong about that, though. In the 1990s, the Wall Street influence was big, but... And don't forget the dot.com era of the early 2000s.

reply

The Fabulous 50s.

reply

Yes! We could start a thread - name the decades!

reply

The 70s used to be called the 'Me' decade. But you never hear that anymore.

reply

And that is correct - the 20's will start on 1/1/20. Decades as we know them don't have anything to do with when centuries begin and end - which is how the year "1" comes into play and screws up the end date for any century. The 21st century started on 1/1/2001, but the decade began on 1/1/2000.

reply

I guess someone could come up with a monster run of hits in November/December of '19 and steal it from her.

Not likely though.

reply

Or a monster hit in 2020. The artist has more than a FULL YEAR to do so.

reply

I am of the opinion that the twenties start in 2020.

You go by the number. I don't care whether we started counting years with 0 or 1 or whatever.

reply

It doesn't matter, there's nothing worth writing home about out there anyway. Let's just get it over and done with. Almost artist of the almost decade.

reply

She's so overrated. That's not even funny anymore
