Opening Acts That Upstaged Huge Headliner

This guy I talk with was saying how Lynyrd Skynyrd blew The Who off the stage in Chicago. He went to the show not even knowing them, and came out a bigger fan than The Who!

I also remember a Grand Funk documentary where they say they blew Zeppelin off the stage, but I also read they went way over their time.

In 1979 I saw UFO open for Blue Oyster Cult at the Forum in Los Angeles and I had never heard of them. I was completely blown away by them and in particular by their guitarist, Michael Schenker. It truly was a life changing event. They are still my all time favorite band and he is my all time favorite guitarist. Blue Oyster who?

Janis Joplin stole the show with this. Notice Mama Cass in the audience, mesmerized and then blown away by the performance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5If816MhoU

In 1988 I saw Guns n' Roses here in Melbourne, Australia. Aussie band Kings of the Sun were the support band they were really good and tight compared to G'n'R who were late to stage and kind of sloppy sound wise. I believe Kings mouthed off about Gunners at some point and it pretty much killed their career. A really good rock n' roll band.

Wow, whoever set that up really had no idea!

In 1992 there was a fundraising concert in Sydney for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Centre, 'Concert For Life'. INXS had top billing and were the final act, but they were blown away by Crowded House who played before them. You could see people leaving before INXS finished because compared to the Crowdies they were just flat. In hindsight it was probably the beginning of the end for the INXS boys.

reply

I can understand why. Crowded House Neil Finn joined Fleetwood Mac and my sister went to see them when they were in Melbourne earlier this year - she said he was mind blowing.

I wonder how careful powerful bands are about who they choose. Obviously, they want someone good, but not that good. I'm guessing some share the same label, but I'm interested in those who want to help a band get some recognition. I wonder who generally makes these decisions, too.

Van Halen Sept. 23, 1978 Anaheim Stadium's Summerfest headlined by Boston

reply

Even Ozzy said they should have been headlining. Sabbath was coked/burnt out.

reply

Apparently Ozzy hearing Van Halen helped him decide it was time to leave Sabbath and I don't think it's odd that he always had the hottest guitar players when he went solo.

reply

He was kicked out, Bill Ward had to do the deed, since he was closest with John.
