Is Zack Snyder a good director?

I'm on the fence with him. He's made some good movies like The Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead, but I'm not sure I like his style.

reply

Not lately, after 300 he was the next big thing but he has been disappointing mostly.

reply

I hate the way his movies look. Everything looks too filtered and fake.

reply

I don't mind his look but he's the worst storyteller ever.

reply

I actually like his fake filtered look. Really enjoyed 300 for what it was.

I think he just need to make easier, more straightforward stories just with over-the-top visuals. That's his signature, style over substance.

MoS, BvS and JL have too convoluted storytelling with more complex characterizations which was not his forte. And I think it was not needed too.

Superhero movies (not all comicbook movies, just the superheroes) are better with simpler characters and motivations. Audience just want to see spectacles. Snyder could have given them that and I feel he's actually good at it.

Even his action scenes are confusing. It's just destruction on top of destruction. There were times where I couldn't even tell what I was looking at.

Looked like he tried to bite more than he can chew. The action scenes in 300 were fantastic. It's over the top, comical, fantastical but still quite clear and not too long.

I think most superhero movie action scenes are now way too long. Destructions and mayhem lose their shocking value when it goes on and on and on with no signs of stopping like in MoS.

BvS was even worse. They introduced new big bad villain very late to the game. Audience were already sigh, another fight? When will this movie end?

But still, I think Snyder has potential. He just need to scale down. Given smaller budget so he would not go overboard with long ass action scenes.

reply

I think he has potential to do a great movie too, but he really needs to stop trying to impress with the visuals because it's not working for him. He needs to be more subtle.

reply

Icing without much cake

reply

He would make a great DC movie but stupid producers ruined everything. He had a great vision for Justice League though. I don't blame him at all

reply

I wasn't a huge fan of Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman so I'm not sure how great this Snyder cut of Justice League that people want to see is going to be.

reply

His direction was impressive on Dawn of the Dead. I haven't seen any of his work since then, though.

reply

He's added a weird filtered look since then.

reply

Me too.

I liked his approach to Dawn of the Dead and he did a pretty solid job with Watchmen - not an easy story to adapt. Man of Steel was mediocre and he's had some major misses too.

reply

It bothers me when I see a capable director just waste their talents doing average or mediocre movies.

reply

Like is not the same as good. Yes he's a good director even if I don't like all of his movies.
